dude macpro3,1 here. Freaking awesome machine. As long as your hanging with the brandnew Macbook pro's in geekbench scores. you have a nice machine. and that's what the macpro3,1 is still doing

Congrats on your machine!

IMO, still a great purchase for a lot of people....unless you're using some seriously high end software, it's a great machine. It will run Mavericks as well.

Don't pay attention to any naysayers....You got a nice machine at a great price....Enjoy it and be productive.

thanks bro, the ups man will be dropping off my new 27 inch monitor in a few days too. I almost sprung for one those high resolution cheap ones made from rejected IPS panels. I hear they look great but went with something made with first rate components. I'll just have to live with 1080P for a while.( oh the pain LOL) All I have left is a memory upgrade, an SSD boot drive, ram kit, second 27 inch monitor, and extra drives for storage in that order.

Congratulations! After changing my all pc's to mac 2010 my best decision was to change the imac to mac pro. It will last very long with all new gpu updates etc. when you have to even think about to buy new one. My pro was 5.1 quad core 3,2 ghz, 16 gb 1066 mhz ram and with radeon 5770 + 1 tb hdd 7200 rpm when i bought it(used one) with reasonable price and with one year warranty. Now it's with little investments 6 core 3,33 ghz, 24 gb 1333 mhz ram, radeon hd7950 mac edition, 240 gb kingston hyperx ssd(Osx)+ 256 gb crucial m4 ssd(Win7 for gaming) and those are connected to velocity solo x2 sata 3 controller. I still have that 1 tb hdd there for pictures, videos etc stuff. What i have spent to this machine is less than high end imac of course without 1440 p monitor but still this beat newest high end iMac easily. And i have got again to motivation to start play games with my mac and i don't want to buy a gaming pc together with mac so i think this is more than enough also for that(example crysis 3 works very smoothly with full hd and highest graphic quality settings). I'm more than satisfied now :) So be proud of your new pro bro :apple:

Big brown delivered my monitor

My new 27" monitor is in my hands now. It wasn't scheduled to be delivered until tomorrow. I didnt even hear the truck come and go. I went to let my dogs out this morning and there was a very large box on my door step. My new Acer 27 looks pretty spiffy after I went into preferences and calibrated it. Its not 1440P spiffy, but its better looking than anything I have had in the past. I won't know how to act with a second one. Since my new card can drive two of them, after I take care of the essentials, I'm going to have to find out. If two gigantic monitors isn't all its cracked up to be, my gaming pc needs a new monitor anyway. Life is good today.

OP, I'm getting in this thread late and after reading some of the responses to your recent acquisition... all I can say is wow...

For starters, I have to agree with the mass here in that it's your money and you know what you need a computer for. I don't feel a person necessarily needs to buy the "latest and greatest" as long as they have a computer system that does more than what they need one for to begin with. :)

It seems you have found that computer and it will serve you well for many years to come! Congrats on the purchase of your "new to you" MacPro!

I myself have a MacPro 1,1 with upgraded firmware to 2,1. I have upgraded my MacPro with 3.0GHz SLAED x5365 quad core processors and am now running 8-cores. I have 7TB of storage and am running with 6GB (soon to be 20GB) RAM. Yes, my MacPro is way obsolete but I don't need USB 3.0 or any of the current state of the art architecture for what I need to do. It serves me well with what I need for a desktop computer.

With that said, there's no need for anyone to buy the latest as long as they can find a good, reliable computer that will serve them for many years. Enjoy yours! Oh, for what it's worth....I've had my MacPro since February 2007 :)

I'm In A Similar Boat

Three weeks ago I got myself a Mac Pro 1,1 Dual Xeon Processors, and 16 GB of RAM, plus a 640 GB Hard Drive. Honestly, even though it's almost 7 years old, it works great! Good luck with your 3,1 at least it runs Mountain Lion! I got a fresh install of Lion though. I can't get ML.

No one NEEDS a lamborgini.

Again, when your specs meet your needs and thresholds for performance, then you have a beast in your hands.

Welcome to the 3,1 Club! Raise your right hand and repeat the following:
1. I will never abuse my 3,1
2. I will consult the MacRumors forum for upgrade options
3. I will keep the interior of my 3,1 "dust bunny" free

[OT]Yes, you can ;). Meet Chameleon. Read the whole thread. Long but worth it.[/OT]

Big Brown has just left my home and my new (to me) 3.1 8 core mac pro is in my hands. I will have to unhook the spare monitor from my iMac to make sure all the bits work but its here. The world is a good place today.

I have the same model. I put an ssd in, as well as 14gigs of compatible ram and a radeon 6870. Still does pretty well. I can run planetside 2 in bootcamp with about 25-30fps (highest benchmark thing... despite it being held back by the CPU... i digress)

Anyway... to be honest a 4.1 would have been a better purchase given that the 3.1 probably wont be able to upgrade to the next OSX... but if you got it for a good price its a good machine.

3,1 and Mavericks DOES work, apparently.

I freaking LOVE my 3,1 8x2.8. I've had it since 2009 (only a year old when I bought it) and the thing just keeps on ticking and ticking and ticking.

Things I did with it that have made it a better machine:

1) Replace the video card, it sucks. I have an ATI 4870 1GB (flashed) that is sooooo much better than the stock card, and it was new 3+ years ago. So you should be able to find something better than the stick card for reasonably cheap.

2) I took out one of the optical drives and replaced it with a caddy that holds 2x laptop/SSD drives, installed a 128GB SSD using one of the 2 extra SATA ports on the motherboard, and cobbled together my own "Fusion Drive" using the SSD + a spinning drive.

Anyway, love my 3,1, and I hope it lasts another 3 or 4 years at least before needing replacement.

Yeah, that was the rumor. Basically anything that runs 10.8 will run 10.9.

32 gig ram kit

I spent the last few hours looking for ram for my machine. I guess its a good thing that I had a lot of time on my hands today. After MANY HOURS of turning over every rock on on the net for the best price, I finally pulled the trigger on a 32 gig kit. Now comes the fun part. I got it for less than 300.00 US and no tax. After shipping it came to 302.00. For ram compatible with the 3.1 thats a decent price for a max capacity kit. It even has those silly gigantic heat spreaders. I got it from Memory America. The best I could find on ebay was about 180.00 US for for 16 gig kits using 4 gig sticks. I did find some used server ram on ebay for a little under what I paid, but when I went to research these ram sticks I couldn't find enough info to really know what I was buying. You guys weren't kidding when you said ram for 3.1's is pricey. You can still find deals if you dig a little though. So I guess the ram I have in here now will get tucked aside and my new full kit will be going in when it gets here. Today is a good day.

For what its worth, the 8 gigs in here now doesn't have those gigantic heat spreaders and its been working just fine. Its just not enough for my needs.

I spent the last few hours looking for ram...

Nice, sounds like you got a good deal - spreaders and all too! Yeah, lots of time the server RAM which works perfectly as many know, doesn't have thermal sensors built in. So to observe memory temperatures one has to go by the three sensors on each of the landing group areas. So you can delight in that as well - if they have those heat-spreaders then they likely also have the thermal sensors. The Apple system doesn't actually use those sensor reads for anything that I know of but it's nice as users to see them occasionally - for like fine-tuning manual fan-speeds and such. :)

^^^^Ya, the price he paid for the RAM sounds to good to be true. I hope he makes out OK.

its 667 ram. The ram in my computer now is 667 and it runs like a scalded dog. 8 gigs just wasn't enough. Since I will likely never see the difference 133 Mhtz makes I figured I would save some money.

Who knew

I'm home from work, finished dinner and got off my feet for a bit. I just retired to my man cave and put my new ram kit into my machine. HOLLY SMOKES I thought my machine was quite snappy with 8 gigs unless I was editing video. 32 gigs is another kind of snappy all together. In two bounces, final cut pro x is ready to edit. Motion 5 is just as snappy. I think I'll loose my lunch when get around to the SSD. This thing really is a beast now.
