I do not care what he uses his money for. He could spend a billion dollards in an pig to act as a computer because "that's what he needs" is it a waste of money? You better believe it. Lets not give op a bad advice and agree with him saying that this was a good purchase. We all work hard to buy this expensive computers and I find hard to believe anyone would recommend to but the current Mac Pro. So lets just be honest here.

Clearly you do. Since we're being honest and all.

OP, nice purchase, man.

Big Brown has just left my home and my new (to me) 3.1 8 core mac pro is in my hands. I will have to unhook the spare monitor from my iMac to make sure all the bits work but its here. The world is a good place today.

Congrats and enjoy your Mac Pro. It's a good, solid machine. Though it's a previous model, I am also using the 2008 3,1. Smooth operation. :)

I low balled a guy really in need of cash off of craigslist for his 5.1 12 core pro got it for 1700 i have no guilt either hahaha

I understand if thats what you need. But im going on to say what a massive fail of a purchase.

Massive fail?

The battle of Tours to the Muslims, Waterloo for the French, and Pearl Harbor for Americans. These were "massive fails".

The guy you refer too bought an old computer. Massive fail? I think perhaps you don't understand the meaning of the words you used.

The deciding factor was price. I needed something with more chops than my 24" iMac, and this is what I could afford to pay for.

Yes its an 8 core 3.1

Soooooo what did you end up paying for the mac pro?

You are out of line. You don't know his needs, wants and objectives. Nor even the price he paid.

I'm not sure which is worse...your ignorance or the lack of class.

Well that edry guy sure put his foot in his mouth - way to over-react! I hardly think a 2013 Mac Pro will be hitting the OP's $750 budget.

Enjoy the new gear OP. It's always fun to get tech upgrades. It feels so refreshing to have something with more grunt :)

Boo. I would buy another one today if I could afford it. A 12-core 5,1 would do more for me than that new mini thing Apple will soon be selling.

I will admit he did get a good deal. Yes I DO own up to things unlike many others here. However I'm still in disbelieve and do not agree with you guys acting like the current Mac Pro is a good purchase at apples price no matter what the need is. I will not agree with you and will never agree. Can't believe people are saying I'm "over reacting" really? You guys are the ones attacking me. Calling me all sorts of names and saying "you don't know this, you don't know that." Really?? Me over reacting? Seriously ?

The mac pro at its current price is not worth it period. There old parts new things are barely compatible. No usb 3 no thunderbolt, old graphics card/gpu EVERYTHING!! that mac pro he bought should be priced 1/3 of the price apple is asking.

A 3,1 Mac Pro is a really a Mac Pro 2008 in less cryptic terms. He bought a used computer. It isn't going to be any less a used computer when the Mac Pro 2013 comes out. Nor it any less used compared to a Mac Pro 2012.

The confusing typo was that he listed it as 3.1 (which is suggestive of the current 3.06 12 core model if rounded up the GHz to two digits. It is not the same thing though.)

The current Mac Pro is a good fit for someone who needs older OS X ( 10.6.8 ) [ for whatever reasons migration to newer OS X or Windows is prohibitively expensive ] and/or has a large sunk cost in proprietary PCI-e cards. Not very many folks fit in that category but it is far from being populated by zero people.

some Mac Pros are used as the basis for "turn key" systems where this is prettty much just handful of apps run on top that generate money. As long as fixed configuration is generating substantial money there is still a positive ROI with very low risk factors if porting a proven software configuration.

I understand if thats what you need. But im going on to say what a massive fail of a purchase.

Get back to your iPad

But seriously i had wanted a Pro for years and when i finally got one i was feeling like

the OP, every day i'm glad i bought it,although at the time i believed it be slightly rash as i thought a new

Pro could be just around the corner. That was 18 months ago.

In all honesty, if you wanted a true value "Mac Pro" you'd go Hackintosh.

Just an update

I have had my beast for a while now and all I can say is WOW!!! Anyway, since I have had it, I had to replace the rear exhaust fan. I looked at SMC fan control and low and behold my exhaust fan showed zero rpm's. It was an easy fix though. Another trip to ebay and I got the entire memory cage with fan for 25 bucks. At first, the seller sent me the front dual fan assembly by mistake. When they made it right they let me keep the wrong part for free. Since its perfectly reasonable to expect a 5 year old computer I bought used to need a fan replacement, I'm ok. I even got a free front fan assembly out of the deal.

The Fedex truck will deliver my BRAND NEW STILL IN THE PLASTIC HD5770 tomorrow. Get this, since the box didn't say apple on the side it only cost me 127.00 with no tax and free shipping. I can live with out a blank gray screen during boot up if it saves me 125.00 off what apple charges. Now all I have to do is save up some more cash then grab a memory upgrade, a 27 Inch screen, and an SSD boot drive and this puppy is ready for the big leagues. ( big league to me any way) Today the world is a good place.

Hehe, sounds like you're having too much fun with that. And two days now the world has been a good place... is that even allowed? :D

Awesome bro! :)

BTW, when you go to do your memory upgrade buy used server memory off e-bay. Those megalithic heat sinks are unnecessary and resellers from every walk charge an unnecessary premium for adding "Apple Approved" to their listings. ;)

I don´t need the power from my 3,1, but still love it.
With SSD RAID, 32GB RAM and a nice GTX 570 this thing still rocks.

What you said.

I'm in the process of bumping the RAM in my 3,1 Mac Pro from 16 to 24 GB, adding a Orico USB 3.0 card and replacing my GTX 285 and GT120 with a GTX 680. This should carry me into 2014, where I might then buy me an iTube (once I can see the hardware/software bugs worked out).

I have a 3,1 8x2.8ghz right now and honestly it has been a great machine since I first bought it. It's no different than the latest ones as far as PCIe slots are concerned, the CPU's use hardly any energy and run super cool. My temps are always 28c to 31c. Fans never ramp up even when using handbrake. I've been wanting a 12 core latest model but am really wondering why. Plus these can be had for around $800. I say to OP good choice.

I luved my 3,1 machine too. But, there is a difference in the PCIE slots. On the 3,1, the two bottom slots are 16 lane, PCIE Revision 2.0 - But the top two slots are 4 lane, PCIE Revision 1.0. On later machines the lane configuration is the same as the 3,1 - but all slots are PCIE revision 2.0. This is an important difference if you plan on using the top two slots for say an SSD or USB3.

The fedex driver just left

I got lucky this morning and the fedex drive delivered my card before I had to leave for work. I quickly popped the card in and it works just fine. "About this mac" repots an ATI HD 5000 instead of 5770 but I guess thats because this is a PC card with no EFI. Anyway, thats small potatoes. When I get home tonight its a fresh instal of Final Cut Pro X.

thats great! i'm still running a 1,1 - still trukin

Got home last night from work and put a fresh copy of final cut pro on my new machine. this morning I sent an episode of my favorite smithsonian HD show to blu Ray with the share function I didn't bother to open compressor and tweak the settings yet. with the plain vanilla settings in final cut, what used to literally take over night on my 24 in imac is 50% complete in about an hour. I'm pretty stoked so far. I don't have to edit with proxy files either. This machine really is a beast. Now I don't have to let encodes run all night so my wife will be happy with the electric bill comes. I'm off to work now.

Congrats and good to hear you're enjoying your Mac Pro. On your second optical bay drive, you can also put in a SSD or a 3.5 HD for additional storage. There is a multi mount bracket that you get buy from OWC Have a good weekend.
