On the topic of the Taycan, seems Porsche is targeting those who lease with a free three year charging at specific locations , I would just question the convenience of location pending the owner, as it was announced:

“Buyers of Porsche’s Taycan EV will receive three years of free charging at Electrify America public stations across the U.S., the automaker confirmed. More specifically, the benefit includes unlimited 30-minute charging sessions during the three-year period. By July 1, Electrify America says it will have 484 locations in operation or under construction, totaling more than 2,000 chargers. Three hundred of these locations will be scattered along highways, with the balance located in 17 metro areas. Each station will have an average of five chargers.”

Yes, it would be nice to see a US X3 diesel. I really wish they'd give us the 35d in addition to the 28d. The 28d is not a bad engine but the performance of the 35d would be really cool in the X3.

Probably won't. If you recall, I showed you an article of the new 5 being offered with a diesel engine. Seems BMW saw low sales because they terminated the model for US export beginning this year. Have to admit I haven't seen one on the road, at least I don't think I have. Shame, too.

I think the reality of 'clean' diesel is pursuant to finding a more cost effective method of making biodiesel or even a synthetic diesel that burns at near 100% efficiency. Though I'm going by what I remember from a science special over a decade ago. Perhaps Ben can weigh in on the matter.

It's going to be a terrible time when ICE goes the way of the dinosaurs.

First VAG pretty much had no choice but to stop selling diesels (though I think if they reintroduced VW diesels at this point they would sell). Mercedes relatively recently stopped selling diesels due to sales. Now BMW seems to be cutting back. It’s kind of too bad.

Way back when my dad had a W210 E300 turbodiesel. I love the W210 body style and with a rock solid diesel it was an excellent commuter car. It wasn’t a particuarly fast car but it got very good mpg for the time. While mechanically it was a good car the electronics sucked. My dad never liked it because it was a Mercedes (it was a company car) but secretly I think he did. The other problem was it was RWD which isn’t exactly condusive to driving in the winters of the Northeast. Therefore he did what everyone else seemed to do in Connecticut at the time and buy a Land Cruiser.

I hope Toyota doesn’t discontinue the Land Cruiser or water it down into some stupid product. I think it’s the best full size SUV you can buy.

Well the W210 was an awful generation. W123 were built to last. The electronics, which could go funny over time, were easy to replace. And with MBZ's repository of parts now it's even easier. W123 wasn't particularly fast, even with the Turbo Diesel vehicles. They were nice highway cruisers. They definitely had heft to the point of feeling like you were on a large yacht.

I don't see Toyota doing that. Toyota is fairly conservative when it comes to making big decisions. I feel even they know their new Supra will disappoint in sales. Not as nice as the concept, and very BMW-ish. I feel BMW benefited much more in that project than Toyota did, or equally both that is. I think we may see other variants of the Land Cruiser available globally before we ever see a neutered Land Cruiser that becomes another useless full size pavement queen.

There was a long period where quality suffered (MBZ) but they've been good for a long time. I've had my car for a long time and have probably spent less than $800 out of pocket. Now assuming if I had no warranty on any of the cars we've owned even when bought new, the Lexus would have set me back a lot. It's very much a YMMV issue.

As with electronics, don't buy first year. Be on top of maintenance. It isn't a Toyota you can go 30,000 miles with the check engine light on and it'll still see 200K miles on the block. In the end, it's no Honda or Toyota. And repairing a Lexus out of warranty is just as expensive.

The old W124s had some fickle electrics issues, but they were nothing you couldn't fix. They had their own set of problems, but like I said, nothing you couldn't figure out on your own. W201 was another elegant piece of the era. Also easy to work on if you had some ingenuity or had a master repair volume on hand.

But I know what you're talking about. It was a solid built era. Closing the door gave you a satisfying but dull thunk. The hinges were not anemic and were able to carry the heft of the doors. Newer Mercs are sort of like that, but the change in materials and design have lead to half-hurah experience.

Yes, “bank vault doors”. When I was very young my uncle has a W126 S-Class. That was an awesome car... and still is IMO. I love seeing them still on the road.

Hmm. Wow, I can see their possible reasoning since it's a low selling car. They'll probably introduce a mid-range version they sell overseas. I vaguely recall a Jalopnik article of some guy buying one at auction and finding out it was a war lord's Land Cruiser.

Yes, those doors in those days could crush your fingers into nothing.

Does anyone else have trouble focusing on the new, higher mounted center screens? These are tacked on to the dash and are mounted higher than the speedo and tach. No part of my progressives seem optimal, unlike my previous cars.

EDIT: A partial solution is to spec glasses with a computer distance lens instead of reading lens, which is much closer. Ideally, the center screen would be better at the same height or below the speedo. Some cars do this.

No specifics on the raw numbers, but they allegedly leaked info yesterday, as Chevy was preparing to reveal the 2020 Silverado HD. But this piques my curiosity, to see what Ford does with the Raptor in the future, if they update that with the rumored 7 L possible over the T.T. Eco boost.

Looking for advice on a quality car cover, for outside, hot environment , 157” long (car is 154”) that does not cost an arm and a leg. I’ve been looking at Amazon in the price range of $40-70, and what bothers me is that depending on the model, somewhere between 6-20% call them junk, with common complaints of tearing, breaking down, and being shot after 5 months.
