I ripped DK with Fairmount but as soon as I bring it into HB it freezes up.. then I tried burning the folder using Toast and the same thing happens.. does the DK DVD need to be mounted with Fairmount for HB to recognize it? I did use RipIt which worked perfectly but, I cant play that on my Xbox360 tells me its a multimedia disk and can be used.

Now Im at a loss..

If you want a full rip of the DVD, mount the disc using Fairmount and then just drag and drop the contents of the disc to your hard drive.

If you want to encode the video for iTunes, Xbox 360, iPod, Apple TV, etc. do the following:

1. Insert the disc into your computer.
2. Launch Handbrake
3. File -> Open Source (Title Specific) ...
4. Select the DVD
5. Hit "Open"
6. Type "1" into the Title box
7. Handbrake should now be able to rip and convert the main film.

If this fails, rip the DVD to your hard drive with Fairmount and use "Open Source (Title Specific)" on the VIDEO_TS folder.

Also, first post! Hi everyone!

This seems to be working! Thanks!

It stalled the first time I tried so I quit HB and restarted and it is working now. I am encoding using the legacy preset and I checked 2pass encoding and turbo first pass. The ouptut is the same as the DVD. It's going to take a while.

problems...

I'm having the same problem with the Tinkerbell disk after trying MTR 2.6x - apparently there is a file open or something. I haven't been able to get back to fixing it - if you go to the MTR forums you'd see my post on the subject.

UGH.

Okay, so my friend was able to hb kung fu panda on her imac, but not tink. however, i was able hb tink on mine, but not kung fu panda. what's up with that?

Does anybody know what is different about the DVD's to make them so hard to read. I nomally use DVD Decrypter and it freezes trying to read the Dark Knight Disk. I tried RipIt4Me (need for 1 other DVD) which is kind of a frontend to DVD Decrypter and had to reboot my Windows Computer. I then just tried to COPY the DVD to my Hard Drive and could not even COPY it. However, I was able to play it with WMP. I am using Windows Vista.

I'm curious whether anyone has had an opportunity to compare the picture quality of the following for The Dark Knight. (I doubt anyone has, but may be interesting.)

1. The DVD as played on a DVD player, versus
2. The DVD version after it is ripped and converted at high quality settings, versus
2. The downloadable version that comes with the expensive DVD set, versus
3. The iTunes HD version

Maybe it's novice question to pose, but I'd be interested to know how each of these compare.

i encoded the movie last night using only hand brake using the title specific option. i just watched it today and it turned out perfect.

I don't know how The Dark Knight compares but I've ripped plenty of other DVD's in my collection to my iPhone using 960kbps constant rate and they look easily as good as any retail digital copy I've seen, which is to say, beautiful. I usually use MTR to rip and Handbrake to encode.

Ok, its done. It looks terrible! The image is pixelated throughout. Can someone who did it using handbrake exclusively post what settings they used? Thanks

H.264
2000kbps
Loose anamorphic (1030x432 final output res but still works on iPhone)
Two Pass encoding (turbo 1st pass)
Hopped on the net and grabbed all the chapter names so it's easy to flick through the movie.

Final size was 2.2GB and it looks stunning both on my iPhone and when playing back on the computer or a larger screen. Took a little over an hour for the first scan and then about 2 and a half for the encode.

There's a LOT of stuff that HandBrake 0.9.3 has issues with. I was ripping my Christmas DVDs so I could have an awesome holiday playlist, but ran into trouble with Miracle on 34th Street (the 90s version), Home Alone 1 & 2, and anything Charlie Brown.

BAH HUMBUG! I really hope the HB devs can figure this out, although I know they try their best with a free open source product.
Its not Handbrake. It's new, harder, DVD protection schemes.

Is VLC in your Applications folder? It probably isn't, or isn't named VLC, or is an old copy of VLC.

Just so you know, it works now with the new version of VLC. Once installed, I went back to Handbrake and opened it using Title Specific on VTS_01_1.VOB. Then I typed in 1 for the title. It works perfectly.

It works perfectly for only 23 minutes then the chapter ends.. HB does not pull in the entire film, only that section of VOB file.. there are 6 more that make up the film..

It pulled all of them for me. Make sure that you're pointing to the correct file, have the latest version of VLC and the latest version of Handbrake.

Its not that tough. Just pick the VIDEO_TS folder (or its parent folder if you wish, but NOT the vob) and choose title 1.

Yes, HB can take a vob as input, but as you noted you will only get what that vob contains.

Don't overcomplicate it. Pick the dvd or VIDEO_TS folder as always, except using title specific so hb will only scan title 1 (whatever vobs that is comprised of). Done.

This worked perfect for me too!! Great idea for whomever came up with it. Worked flawlessly!!

Yup, this worked great for me too. i used dvdfab decrypter on my pc, and tried to hb it there. it wasn't working out, so i transfered the main movie video_ts to my mac, and had no problems. good tip to try on any other dvd's that can't directly hb on my mac. and i was thinking of throwing out my pc, well, that's one reason to keep it...

That works too. I selected the vob file and then title 1 and it worked for me. Those are the instructions that were on the Handbrake forums.
