For those of you who think Apple is charging less for their OSes than MS does.

Well, you do know that Apple releases new OSes much more rapidly than MS. For 6 or 7 years it took MS to release Vista, Apple made 3 or 4 OS releases, each priced @ 129$. When you do the math, the prices even out with vista ultimate, if not more.

?

Still you get 3-4 times more products? I dont really get your math.

I'm saying that over the same period of time people pay the same (if not more) money for Apple OS, as for MS OS.

For those who think Mac OS is cheaper than Winodows.

Unless you skip a version or two. Going straight from a stock install of Jaguar to Leopard, for instance. At least you have that option...

My only surprise with this system is the starting price. One huge advantage PCs have over Mac is the low starting price points for consumers that don't or won't pay a premium of $200-$400 for a Mac.

With the XPS One being $300 more than the iMac, I don't see anyone getting it over the iMac, unless someone is just wanting to buy the XPS to say that they refuse to buy an Apple.

PC manufacturers are getting better in the all-in-one designs....not bad.

The Dell XPS Desktop has both, side and rear connectors.

The best of both worlds.

Look again, the Dell has connectors on the back as well.

Plus on the side it has a media card reader built in. Handy for uploading digital camera pictures.

The Dell has rear ports too, plus side ones. Makes it very convenient to use.

The Dell XPS Desktop looks like a nice system. Plus it runs Windows. My bet is that it will sell well to those looking for an All-in-One type computer.

The PC AIO's have always had trouble selling, as PC users upgrade/update so quickly. I know a guy that has a Gateway and spent a lot of money on it a while back. He's already outgrown it but stuck with the whole unit, rather than just updating the computer and keeping the nice LCD screen.

iMacs can be justified as Macs tend to last a whole lot longer than PC's...

As far as the port thing, ports on the front are convenient. I didn't buy my HP Workstation for aesthetics...

I know I have already got slammed to death for pointing this out, but I honestly feel like my iMac came with ports on the front. The 2 on the keyboard are really convenient for thumb drives, iPods, etc. It is the best of both worlds - a nice form factor design on the computer and access to ports "from the front" via the keyboard.

Go ahead - slaw away..... :)

Do not compare a "HP Workstation" with an iMac. Compare it with a Mac Pro, and that one HAS USB ports on the front.

And how much is OS X if you don't own a Mac yet? The price of the less costly Mac Mini. In which case you get a free computer with OS X ;) ;)

Well, the same can be said for any OS, the best deal being Linux based distributions. You have to have a computer to run an OS and the other software, so the cost of Mac OS X without the Mac is still $129 and the cost of Windows Vista Ultimate is $400 even if you have no PC. Now, the difference is that you can build your own PC and then buy Vista, but you can't build your own Mac and then buy Leopard, I think that is what you were getting at.

(I checked the prices online and Windows is offering upgrade packages of Vista. If you have Home Basic and want to go to Ultimate you can pay $200 for the upgrade, the prices vary by which version you are upgrading from. Everywhere you go the price is still $400 for the Ultimate version.)

as said before: the system builder prices are much lower

Hey Guys...

I'm not really sure I see the point in this discussion of Windows vs. Mac OS X, especially given the message board we're on, y'know?

Shortly, I'll be selling my PowerBook G4. I'm presently looking into the possibility of also selling my iMac G4/800. If I do, I plan on buying a "desktop" Mac of some description to replace the iMac. It won't be an iMac/Intel, since ever since Apple moved fron the iMac G4 form factor, I've never really cared for them. And even if (sake of argument) I were to buy one of these Dell XPS units, the very first thing I'd be doing upon powering it up for the first time is sticking a Linux install disc into the machine, since I can't conscience Windows under my roof, thank you very much.

Oddly enough, Linux is what I'm running on my web server (which is what I'm using to type this message), and it's an old "Beige" G3/300, vintage 1997. It's specifically running Debian Etch. And what's pretty cool about this is, amongst other things, I'm surfing using the latest released version of Firefox, something I couldn't do if I stuck with what Mac OS I would otherwise be able to run on it.

Well the one thing the Dell can't match on the iMac is the option for wall mounting. I am currently placing my new iMac on my living room wall to have as my entertainment system. TV, internet, DVD system and I'll be using Front Row. The Dell is not made that way, no match for the iMac even without the wall mounting. ;)

But not everyone is a system builder or cares for that option. The advertised, MSRP for it is $400. Besides... one can claim that they didn't pay anything for Windows Ultimate or Mac OS X, but that's stealing. ;)

As for the upgrade path of Mac OS X, as was said before, you don't have to buy each and every release, just like many haven't bought Vista. But when you do want to purchase either one, you will be paying less for OS X than you would for Vista Ultimate.

Because the XPS is more expensive than the iMac, and doesn't offer any immediate advantages over the iMac other than more USB ports, I would consider it a novel attempt, but one that may not take on as fast as the iMac. Besides many users would rather get a machine that can be upgraded or in a tower form when they look for PCs. I don't think there is a laptop that can compare to the 17" Alienware. I would love to put a SSD in one slot and a large HDD in the other. The only problem is that it runs Windows. I would have to immediately put Ubuntu on it and just boot XP when I need to run my creative pro apps.

Kinda pricy for a 20" machine - besides that it's not too bad. Like the Gateway better though.
