Doctor Who: Michelle Ryan to guest star in Easter special

Michelle Ryan will guest star alongside David Tennant in this year's first Doctor Who special at Easter, prompting speculation that she may get a permanent role as the Doctor's companion when the show returns for a new series in 2010.

The former EasterEnders star will play the mysterious Lady Christina de Souza, who joins the Doctor on a bus trip which takes a "detour into danger", the BBC said. The special is scheduled for broadcast in April.

"I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who and very excited to be joining David Tennant and the Doctor Who team," said Ryan. "It is such a fantastic show and I can't wait to get started."

Ryan will be joined in the Planet of the Dead special at Easter by comedian Lee Evans, who plays a character called Malcolm, whose life becomes connected to the Doctor's under extraordinary circumstances.

Planet of the Dead is the first of four Doctor Who specials that will air in 2009. The shows will be the swansong for Tennant and Russell T Davies – the executive producer and showrunner responsible for the sci-fi drama's hugely successful revival in 2005 – who will both bow out after the Christmas 2009 special to make way for new Doctor, Matt Smith.

From Albert Square to becoming bionic, and then Dr. Who... formidable. Especially as Zoe Slater.

Lee Evans: talented but almost the same in everything. Comic relief, perhaps?

don't knock teh Zoe :p

Lee Evans will break into a sweat the first time he speaks ;) lol

I do not know these people and am not familiar with their works at all, so it'll be nice to go into the Easter Special with an open mind. This is exactly what happened with Catherine Tate last year. ;)

Exactly - for me, the one and only Master will always be Roger Delgado. What a beautiful bastard.

I thought John Simm was brilliant as the Master, it ended the series perfectly, i thought series 4's ending was simply awful, it just seemed corny and obvious, It's a shame they used him as the master, he would have made a great Dr. Even though it would have only been for a series or two, since he's frightened to death of being typecast.

Agreed. John Simm was indeed an excellent Master, but still not as good as Delgado in my opinion. ;)

Thanks for the head's up. Yeah, I'll just wait and watch the episode before making any guesses, too unpredictable. :p ;) Can't wait for Moffat and the new Who next year!

So, how did you all like it? I thought it was ok, although there wasn't happening very much IMHO. I liked Malcolm, though. ;)

Spoilers: 1. The aliens reminded me of Pitch Black... 2. When at the end Carmen tells the Doctor that he should be careful, this will be about his next regeneration, I suppose. But there are still two specials coming, aren't there?

The Easter special is the first episode I've watched since the one with Kylie Minnow-gew aboard the Titanic. Good fun - I enjoyed it.

(Michelle Ryan in lycra!)

Just acquired this special along with the Confidential - will watch it in the next couple of nights and share my thoughts. Great to have a new Who story, but I must say what I'm really looking forward to is 2010 and Moffat's Who...

I quite liked that but it served as a reminder that Tennant won't be around much longer. His performance was brilliant. TBH I was expecting something along the lines of the Xmas specials, something happy and pantomime-y but it was a really solid episode.

Shame about UNIT's arse licking though.
