So, allow me to ask the obvious question -- is there a way to force the iPhone to 1900mhz only? I sure can't find any setting to do so.

Doubtful. And I really dont see why you'd want to. All you'd be doing is cutting down on your available signal, since you'd be going from two available frequencies down to one. Is the 850mhz band that horrible? If you are having signal issues, I really dont think the solution is to reduce your bands down to one.

If you really wanted to try it, I'd find out if you can get your hands on a tri-band phone first and see how 1900mhz performs in your area. 850mhz is newer in North America, but bear in mind that having the two bands is a big part of what gives AT&T extra coverage over T-Mobile (T-Mobile allows roaming onto the 850 band if you have a quad-band phone but they mostly use the 1900mhz frequency.)

Also, you may just not be able to easily hack that. It's a fairly uncommon request to want to REMOVE better signal options.

And remember that the 850 band will have much better signal penetration than 1900 for use in buildings and low signal areas.

Also true. I really think there's not much compelling about limiting your bands. To the poster who first asked this: is this entirely driven by gsm buzz? Because you'd be better off researching speakers that are shielded from it (some definitely work better than others), or use airplane mode. I don't see why you'd want to limit your signal just to reduce some buzzing.

Maybe this is why Apple deleted it

"My wife was way worse at work"

I work in a copper lined building, so when my phone doesn't get service I don't fret. I do think though that you are one of the very few people that like sprinit.

Haha, proving once and for all that we are nothing more than the sum of our own experiences.

I despise Sprint to a level which I could not tastefully express on this forum, and which is dangerous to my health when I let myself get worked up recounting the sordid details of my time with them.

I can sympathize with the fact that Apple made their marquee product compatible with AT&T only, but it seems like it was the only choice that they had. Sprint and Verizon both refused to meet Apple halfway. Apple had to reward AT&T for their flexibility by giving them exclusive rights.

AT&T is now laughing all the way to the bank, as it seems that the iphone exclusivity has bought them a nice bundle of 2 year contracts (~28,000 in the first 18 hours?)

I'm content with my Verizon service. The quality is decent, the price is the same as everybody else, and the customer service is a few steps above "reprehensible"...I would rate it "disappointing". But Verizon really did miss the boat by passing on this phone. I'm sure there are plenty of execs catching an earful now from the board for letting this slip through their fingers.

dude, I find it necessary to tell you that you could get more service from sprint for less money, and get the moguls for under $200 straight from sprint.

If you got two SERO lines, you would get 500 minutes per phone, unlimited data, unlimited text, 7pm nights and weekends, picture mail, etc for $30/mo per phone. The mogul is $288.99 before a $100 mail in rebate.

I have one through them and I pay $75/mo for 500 min on my phone, 1250 min on my momther's phone, and pretty much unlimited everything.
