The Japanese are with you and they have a history with swords as well

It is actually the indirect reason as daft as it sounds though more directly related to the drivers of horse drawn vehicles.
As the majority are right hand dominant people, that led to them sitting on the right to give plenty of space for their whip hands and so at the time motor vehicles became popular, that was just the way it was done and so it stayed.

Today, two thirds of the world drive on the right side. Whilst the elite nations drive on the correct side... :p

I can drive manual with the best of them but…Pre COVID my wife and I traveled to the UK each year for vacation. Always rented an automatic at an exorbitant fee compared to manual because everything’s in the wrong position, the steering wheel’s on the wrong side and you drive on the wrong side of the road. I can really only handle one of those things at a time :) . Plus lanes that are too narrow, roundabouts, and hey, Americans freak out on a 7-10% grade and I’ve regularly seen 15-20% grades in the UK ( the view there seems to be the best way down a hill is STRAIGHT down). Sheesh. Definitely hats off, you all win:D.

He he he…. Yep have you driven in France or Italy? They make us feel like that… Doing 80 over cobblestones in Rome in a taxi was thrilling yet terrifying in equal measure. Don’t even start me on the driving in Paris. It’s like watching a warm up for a demolition derby!

You should see some of the hills in our cities! In Glasgow as you get to the western edge of the city centre, the roads get steeper. You struggle to walk up them never mind drive up them. Check this one out from google maps. This usually has a collection of German marques at the bottom in the wintry days. The parking spaces are perpendicular to the hill too so you feel like you are going to roll down the hill getting out of the car.

Also, bit of a trick when booking auto rentals… in the UK because autos are in the minority, then rent a smaller car with an auto gearbox - they frequently upgrade you to a bigger car for free as they struggle to get small autos. May backfire but if you are prepared to drive a small car anyway, then it is a nice treat - worked particularly well out of Heathrow.

Great idea, thank you! We'll keep it mind. Now, if we can just get this pesky pandemic behind us...

Trouble with a small car is it’s hard to get a body in the boot.
