All these newer machines destroying my Haswell based xeon e3-1246 v3 score. Dang! What's crazy about it is my machine seems fast, or at least fast enough for me. My machine before this was a rig I built with an FX-9590 and an R9 Fury, so I didn't even upgrade much (Maybe even downgraded on the GPU). I sold that machine because I wanted to fund my dive into the MacOS ecosystem. This Hack is the eventual result, along with some other machines. I think the Hackintosh is my favorite though just because I like to tinker.

Looks like MacOS has a new Big Sur update. Hopefully this doesn't break my machine!

My 10700 build is fine for now but sure, I'd love a Zen 3 Threadripper whenever they come out.

I would surely say a 10700 is "fine for now" lol. Rub it in why don't ya. What smbios do you use for that?

It's not a proper hack - I am running Mojave and Big Sur in Virtual Machines. My main programs run better in Windows. It has 64 GB of RAM and 3 TB SSD. Normal operating temperatures are 27-32 degrees.

I have officially made up my mind. My next machine will be 16 inch MBP when Apple release ARM version.

So far, this machine is working fine. It will serve me for gaming probably.

I don't even game on my hack, I just use Shadow. I find it easier than rebooting into windows. I wonder if you could game on parallels?

Just got done building my $500 Ryzen 5 3600 hack using Open Core 0.6.3 and Catalina. It's a beast for the price.

I got the Ryzen 5 3600 from Neweeg on sale for $180 and a Gigabyte B550 Micro ATX Pro MB for $120. Spent $50 on a Micro ATX Case. The rest of the parts came from my old Skylake build.
I also used the stock cooler that came with the CPU. Temps seem fine with it.

I'm doing similar. I'm looking between the Ryzen 5 2600X, Ryzen 5 3600, and Ryzen 7 2600X, while using a Gigabyte B450 I Aorus Pro WIFI. My current hackintosh build is based off the Z77N-WIFI board with a Core I5-3700K. It's long in the tooth, but with M1 coming out, I no longer need an Intel build. All I really need is motherboard, CPU, and Memory and I'm set.

BL.

I wen to full on emulate basic configuration Mac mini:

So I have spend half of what base Mac mini would cost....

Installed macOS Big Sur using Opencore 0.6.4 with all things work, except Wi-Fi. I am too lazy to get Wi-Fi working, so no AirDrop for me. Bluetooth is working with old Bluetooth USB dongle, so my AirPod can connect to it without issue. iMessage, FaceTime, App Store all works.

Haven't followed hackintosh a lot lately, but does Big Sur work with a GTX 1060?
Last time I looked into updating High Sierra to Mojave, there wasn't any Nvidia driver available afaik...

no nvidia support past high sierra.

(some older cards like gtx 780 can be patched to work with custom vbios)

Re Parallels.. I’ve been paying for Parallels since v3. Now up to 16.

Avoid it like the plague if you want to game. Get VMWare fusion. It is so much better it’s depressing how much I’ve spent with PD and still can’t game with it. And VMware is free.

i don’t even know what Parallels is good for anymore. Mouse issues. Artificial cpu and Ram limitations. Doesn’t even have the better interface anymore.

tldr: VMware fusion runs Crysis (and 2,3). Parallels doesn’t.

Agreed here, been with Parallels around v 4. I am thinking this is the last year for paying for something that gives relatively little in return.

@Aoligei regarding the dual GPU options. Several years ago I had the same assumption, that MacOS would only recognize a single GPU. I was corrected by a long-timer here, I forget who. MacOS does indeed recognize both GPUs, and will utilize them. Of course no games were coded for this at the time.

Although Metal supports it, still not sure if any MacOS games utilize multiple GPUs to this day. I had an opportunity to see for myself once, I think it was a 7990 in a cMP - both GPUs recognized.

macs with discrete GPUs and non-xeon processors have long used the iGPU for quick sync, so they are using two gpu's

edit: maybe i’m slightly off topic

Now while I was originally obsessed with buying a 27” iMac, I got chatting to a friend last night and he said that for the same money, I could have a PC that would be more powerful & more storage than the iMac. So this got me thinking about Hackintosh for the best of both worlds.

Have Windows for Gaming (Steam & Xbox Gamepass Ultimate) & Handbrake, then the Hackintosh for Lighroom, Photoshop, Portrait Professional, Finalcut Pro & Sidecar to my iPad Pro if at all possible.

I know there are things like the Mac Mini and I will probably look at getting a more up to date Macbook Pro for work when away from home in the future, But was wondering if all what I need to do, is doable on Hackintosh ?.

Many thanks
