When the new Mac mini and MacBook Air were announced, I ordered a MacBook Air because I dislike my current 2016 MBP.

However, later I realised that I rarely use my laptop as a laptop (it was replaced by my iPad Pro for 90% of my personal stuff) and that it's mostly sitting on my desk connected to an external display, keyboard and mouse.

I ended up canceling my order and ordering a new Mac mini instead. I opted for the Core i5 version with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of flash storage. I will probably get an eGPU later.

By the way, a very nice Apple support person told me that while it's possible to upgrade the RAM in the new Mac mini, using non-Apple branded memory would "most likely void the warranty", whatever this means.

I decided to pick up a new mini to replace my 2014 mini. This mini has been used for the past four years as a family computer and has ran without any problems, and with the nice spec upgrade the new mini should last us at least 5 or 6 years.

Initially I was going to get the base model with updated storage, as I really don’t feel like managing multiple accounts, apps, and media on external drives. So 512GB is a must for me. When I speced out the base mini with this storage I realized it came to only CHF151 (about $150) more than an i5 model with a 512GB SSD. I thought why not spend a little extra, as spread out over the years it’s more than worth it. So I got the i5 with 522GB SSD. It looks like it will take two weeks to get built and make its way to Switzerland.

This machine will probably be overkill for my needs but if it lasts 5, 6, or 7 years it will be worth it. I’ll throw in 32GB of RAM eventually but no rush. I mostly use my 2016 nTB MBP and the rest of the family doesn’t do anything too taxing.

I’m looking forward to it arriving though and to hooking it up to my eGPU. Should be a pretty capable little machine.

I ordered an 3.0GHz 6‑core i5 w/ 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD storage, a 32" LG 32UD59-B 4k monitor and I'm hoping to pick up a wired Apple keyboard because I prefer those. o_O

Looking forward to playing with everything!

Thoroughly enjoying my i5/8/256. Memory will be upgraded later, and I decided on 256 rather than 512 so I can use the extra dough to splurge on a nice monitor and mechanical keyboard

I’m debating on storage - what do you use the Mini for? Mine will be causal photos and iMovie and usual surfing. But I have 235GB of photos already...maybe I could put it on an external drive?

General everyman computer stuff + coding. All my media is on externals. My work software and files are on the internal SSD. I've got about half the SSD free after moving everything around and I don't anticipate it ballooning anytime soon. But if it does, I'm cool with externals.

My order status changed to "Preparing to Ship" but the date is 16th of November...maybe I'll get it earlier? Longest wait ever haha!

I chose pick-up at Apple Store.

My wait is the 22nd to the 26th! It’s also in preparing to ship status. Guess it takes a while to get to Switzerland. When I lived in Japan custom configs from Apple arrived pretty quickly.
