Three days ago I ordered the 16GB/512GB M1 mini. At the time, Apple's estimated delivery date was December 24, and according to my order status updates, it still is. Strictly speaking I don't "need" it, but if it does what I need, I can sell my mid-2014 MBP Retina for a few hundred and live happily with the new mini for quite awhile.
I don't know how much longer the old MBP will keep going. I'd rather move on from it while I can still sell it for a few hundred bucks than wait till it's only good for parts. Until these new M1 Macs were announced, I was wondering if I could even afford to buy another new Mac that could handle my use of photo processing apps including Lightroom and Photoshop. This is a hobby, after all, not how I earn my living. But man, I was dreading the prospect of going back to Windows because of being priced out by Apple. I don't need pro-level video editing type power in my computers, but more capability than the entry level Intel Macs. I already have a dual monitor desktop setup powered by the MBP so I don't need to buy peripherals. Just the mini. I'm looking forward to trying it out.
