Sold my 2011 server mini last year and used a Windows laptop since then. But I am one of those who actually like to use the stock apps (iMovie, Pages); and esp. for iMovie there isn't really an alternative. Tried the free Resolve, but that doesn't run well on Windows because only the paid version uses gpu acceleration (on Mac, also the free version uses acceleration).
The M1 was an obvious choice, the 16gb flavour would set me back 1000 EUR which is too much for me. Tempted to buy the 8GB model for around 780 EUR, but then I got the opportunity to buy a near-mint i3 2018 with 16GB and 256 SSD for 500 EUR. That price fitted my bill better, and it gives me the opportunity to see how the apple silicon game plays out in the coming two years. Until then, the performance of the i3 plus the 16GB ram will be sufficient.
Am actually happier with the i3 than I expected. Big Sur looks very nice on my Iiyama 4K screen, and the machine is faster than anything I have or had before.
The only issue I encountered so far, is that the monitor stays black after a reboot - I have to unplug the hdmi cable from the mini and plug it back in to get it working again.
