My M2 Pro Mac mini was delivered today in Switzerland. TNT/FedEx only notified today’s planned delivery 2 hours before the delivery. This morning they hadn’t indicated a delivery date. Yesterday the Mac was still in Belgium, where it had been for the last 4 days. What a mess of a delivery company 🙄
Whatever: I’ll be home tomorrow to set it up 😀

I just ordered an M2/16Gb/512Gb 1GbE with an ETA of February 24 for store pickup.
It replaces a late 2014 Mac Mini 8Gb/256Gb that cannot run Ventura.

I have been going backwards and forwards between this configuration and the base M2 Pro, but find it difficult to justify the extra $400.
I do some occasional GoPro and drone video editing, but I'm not being paid for it (and yes, I'm looking for validation that I have ordered the perfect configuration for my needs 😂).

This will primarily serve as a media server for my iTunes movie library.

I have two Synology NASs for file storage.

I'm still trying to understand the desire to order 10g ethernet. I know it's only a $100 option, but I'm not seeing value for a home system. I'm sure I'm missing something here.
So, you don't think we're going to have Gb+ internet in the next 7 years? :)

Plus, throughput to my NAS when converting media. :). Not that I'm impatient or anything. :D

I thought about 10Gb Ethernet too, but also thought about now having the option to upgrade the mini when my needs change (maybe 10Gb) and then get to keep using my ASD without being tied to the specs of an aging machine like I have been with my late 2014 iMac 5k.

Just curious, but why not put all the video libraries on the NAS? Plex ... ? Plex on an AppleTV 4K is a wonderful experience...

Yes I will, in fact I’m transferring my iTunes library to my bigger NAS right now. It is a little over 1TB. I’m copying the files from a 2TB external HDD. I’m hoping that the read speeds will be sufficient for HD content.

I record TV via Plex's digital tuners. A 30 minute newscast in MPEG2 (.ts) format is 1.5GB, or 3GB/hour. That's 833.3KB/s, which is very, very low bandwidth.

Imagine I have a crazy high bitrate (I never play these; most typical is 10GB/3 hours, just as an example) 60GB file, a movie, over 2 hours. That's 8333KB/s, or 8.3MB/s, or 0.008333 GB/s - tiny. Even 10/100 networking from 1995 would keep up with this; gigabit has no issue, particularly as it's switched.

Any hard drive can do many, many, many times that. An old hard drive, 10x that. A good, newer hard drive, perhaps 15x that. And given that Plex buffers to minimize drive chatter, it's quite efficient.

Gigabit is still unaffordable to me... I don't see those services just popping up here for a good value

Yeah I got 10gE on my 2018 mini just in terms of "wouldn't it be nice" future-proofing, but unless you have an actual intranet use case scenario (a plex server or something) it's probably one of those "people buy it thinking they might use it but never will" upgrades. The cost added to the machine versus just getting a newer one at the point in the future where you might make full use of those speeds probably doesn't make sense for lots of people.

Unless said person has a 10gbe uplink, that would be one very odd Plex server.

Typically 10gbe is for local lan requirements, like a NAS connection or video work.

Home users generally do not need this, nor will they in years.

I'm not an impatient person (ok I am) but does anyone in Europe know how long it typically would take to deliver an Apple product once it has been customs cleared in Leipzig and is at DHL. Apple says unit still will come on the 14th, 6 days from now. But is was processed and shipped to Europe in 2-3 days. Will DHL take another 6 days because Apple said so?

Just asking, as I said, I am a very patient person (NOT!). 😁

I take it DHL doesn't have detailed tracking information.

I know the feeling, I think my mini is on this aircraft (parcel went China, Hong Kong, Bahrain and soon to be at East Midlands airport)
