Buying a new machine with three years f AppleCare is worth lot for peace of mind. The 4,1 & 5,1 are vastly overpriced for 5-8 year old systems with no warranty. No offense to anyone ordering 6,1s, but why decide to go with one over a 5,1 (or 4,1)? I can think of these reasons: smaller footprint, lower power consumption, better top-end CPU, and slightly faster memory. But those all seem negligible when you consider the price difference and lack of upgradeability. You'll also have a rat's nest of wires for all your expansions. Especially with the ability to install new GPUs in the 5,1 (or 4,1), I think they have the potential to be a much more powerful system. The same fast blade SSDs can also be installed in them.
Ridiculously overpriced for an old used system with no warranty.I've got one that I'm typing on now. Maxed out with 8 Cores and Dual SAS Drives in Apple RAID 1. It's been restarting the past two days out of nowhere. Not sure I want to install Sierra on it as it will surely slow it down…not to mention I have to use the patch.
So I'm thinking of picking up a maxed out 5,1:
2x Intel Xeon Westmere 6-Core 3.46Ghz Processors - 12 Cores and 24 Threads
128GB Ram (8x 16GB DDR3 ECC Memory)
1TB SSD hard drive
4TB standard rotational hard drive
NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB Video Card - 2x DVI Output 1x Display Port and 1x HDMI
Price is $4,000.
Thoughts?

I"ll add my thoughts on this one too. I agree it's overpriced. I think that is worth $1700 to $3000 max. Here's why:
-$500-$900 for MP 5,1 (Craigslist, eBay, etc.)
-$300 for pair of X5690 CPUs (eBay)
-$400-$600 for 128GB RAM (eBay)
-$250-$900 for 1TB SSD ($250 for an entry level 2.5" or up to $900 for new SSUBX)
-$100 for 4TB hard drive
-$150 for GTX 780 GPU
You also probably wouldn't want 128GB of RAM because you don't want to use the 4th memory slots for optimal performance. 6 sticks of 16GB each would be better. But you could save more by going with 6 8GB sticks because that's plenty of RAM for most anything. You also don't really need a 1TB SSD if you're using it for the boot drive. You can get a super fast 256GB SSUBX for $200. You could get a new GTX 1060 for the price of a used GTX 780 that would give you a little better performance and a warranty. You could also go with a pair of lower wattage 3.06GHz X5675 CPUs for 1/3rd the price of the 3.46GHz CPUs and you probably wouldn't notice much difference in performance.
The cMP has a 3 channel memory connection so the 4th slot shares bandwidth with the 3rd slot. So if you have 4 DIMMs then you take a performance hit with half of your memory accesses. Same thing with the 8th slot in dual CPU configurations. I don't remember the percentage but in the real world you will probably never notice unless you have a memory restrained application. What is the advantage of keeping the 4th memory slots open?
I just picked up a 2010 Apple Mac Pro 5,1 on eBay. It's scheduled to be delivered this Friday.
12-cores @ 3.06GHz, 64GB of RAM, 1TB HD, and an AMD Radeon R9 280X 3GB, running macOS Sierra.
.......
I'm mainly looking to use it for gaming, some Illustrator and Photoshop work, and working in Ableton Live..
Curious how much you get this fairly high spec Mac Pro for.
just got shipping on mine, should be here friday
ordered placed sunday, 15", 3.1, 512ssd
I've never seen a 15" mac pro. Did you get a laptop instead?not sure what you are asking...?

Ok, I just joined the club and couldn't be happier. Started out with a 2.66 setup and 16GB of RAM in a 2009 4.1 that I received for FREE. Went online and found a deal for a 3.33 12 core, 64GB RAM, GRX 780 3GB, 1TB PCIe SSD card and 4port USB 3.0 card. So I ordered the complete tray and installed it and absolutely love it so far. Gonna do some changed to the SSD setup to get more speeds, but honestly, it's plenty fast for the read/writing that I'm doing. All in all, I'm in it at $2000 even.

Did you install a 5,1 tray? I read that will cause the fan speed to run at full speed all the time due to the incorrect SMC version.
