Ok I've been looking at every thread and still trying to decide between a brand new 15" with retina display or a refurbished one. I'm a student also so I can't decide if I should use the education pricing or do the refurbished one. The refurbished one I'm looking at:
$2099
Originally released July 2014
15.4-inch (diagonal) Retina display; 2880-by-1800 resolution at 220 pixels per inch
16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM

512GB Flash Storage1

Brand new with education price:
2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz
16GB 1600MHz memory
512GB PCIe-based flash storage 1
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5 memory
Built-in battery (8 hours)2
$2,299.00

HELP!!

Try over in the MacBook Pro subforum...

I have had my Mac Pro 4.1 ---> 5.1 for nearly a week now. I ordered it from the good people at Create.Pro with the following specs.

12 core 2.66Ghz
24GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 980 4GB
Nvidia GT 120 (back up card)
256GB PCIE SSD
2TB Boot Camp HDD
USB 3.0 card

The machine performs very well. The SSD reads at 800MB/s and writes at 1100MB/s. Even if an EFI comes out for the GTX 980 I am happy not to flash it as it doesn't make much difference. Photoshop opens and saves large images easily, the latest games run at max settings in Windows 8.1, and I have scope for further upgrades two years down the line.

Edit : I don't know why TinyPic rotated some images below, please forgive them :))

My new flashed 4,1 Mac pro also works like a champ and I should have said so on this thread - much quicker than my dual 3,1 with only 6 cores though but I will go apple blade upgrade first before dual socket. As I have just found out you are in the UK I might be able to find you an engineering firm here to window your lid to show off the 980 by sounding out big brother with a rough idea of a price.

Send me a pm with your mobile so I know it's a serious enquiry and I will find out for you fella - time for bed!

The Power Mac G5 had one such plastic panel. Would it be possible to engineer a see through side panel for the Mac Pro? Not cutting or modifying the original side panel - but a drop in replacement. If there is demand on this forum for such a product it could be a nice earner.

Something like this but without bolts showing on the outside (because we like our designs minimalistic)

Would be a big cost tooling that up - you have the catches on top of the sleds which meet up on the panel which secure the panel to the case by the rear lever. You could only realistically cut out the lower panel part to keep the structural integrity of the whole panel. See here.

mac-pro-side-off.jpg

Would be cheaper getting a spare original panel, the lower section cut out and a clear panel fitted. Though I would even have doubts about cutting the whole thing out, the smaller the hole, the more rigid the panel is and most clear panel material from my era of materials do not take being stressed that well. Maybe a window aligned with the processor tray perhaps..

This is what I mean. But the way you describe the process probably means it is impractical even for decorative purposes.

Done right I think it will look pretty good and will not be difficult especially if you just window the PCIe slot bay. Inside measurements will need to be taken for clearance between the panel if you wish to window the processor bay but blutack is useful for that as a rough guide.

I am pretty bad at describing new concepts in type but words are a different ballgame, if you want my number send me a pm and I will be more than happy to clarify exactly by ear.

I may be an it engineer but dad and brother were both engineers with workshops and before I really started in computers I was helping my brother out a lot. Retrofitting grid battlefield laptops with their orange plasma type displays to fit 20gb conner IDE drives inside for UK challenger tanks before they were shipped to Saudi for a certain war in 1991 so they didn't get splattered by a-10 warthogs was a memorable one :D

He got my job in computers right after :)

Just bought the quad core w/1tb ssd to replace my 2011 mac mini which seems to be making a lot of noise , overheating and having various graphics issues lately. It's surprisingly noisy when the fans rev up !

I only use email , safari and very light office stuff so its probably overkill but it's the only option as I don't like the iMac at all ( had 2 with screen issues over the years )

No doubt they'll update it in a few months , lol , happened to me when I bought my first mac pro in 2007 , but it's STILL working !!!

If you are talking about the late 2013 mac pro being noisy, overheating, etc. get yourself to an Apple store and have them fix it.

It should make no noise, shouldn't overheat, and hardly any fan noise.

I have this machine (well, the 6 core one) and it's absolutely quiet.

If you are talking about an previous mac pro than the latest one; well, I can't help you there.

He said his iMac was doing all that

No , the mac mini . I think it has serious ventilation issues . I even put it on rubber feet but it gets very very hot. It's on an open shelf with plenty of space round it too.

It's the custom 2.7 w/ amd + ssd + 750 gig so it's probably quite cramped in there !

Bought my mother one of the newer mini's and it's MUCH cooler running.

Still it's Xmas an I wanted something special so I splurged out on a mac pro. Excited :)

So, you want to say that the Mac Pro is good, but the mini and iMac is bad?

I am a bit confused. I also thought that you just got a quad core Mac Pro and it's noisy + overheating.

Yes.

The mini is ok , the new one , the old one got very hot . The iMac is ok apart from the built in screen .

No , I haven't received the new mac pro yet. Looking forward to it immensely.

It likely goes DFW => LHR.

That would be nice, as it would make it quite possible it would arrive in Belfast on Friday (Despite the monday estimate)
LHR is less than one hour from BFS

It has just arrived at Louisville Kentucky.

I would imagine it will go from Louisville Kentucky to the European hub in Cologne, from there to London Heathrow and from LHR to Belfast. Monday looks more likely in light of that.

I'd say the difference between standard and express shipping would be hub to nearby airport as opposed to hub to hub

I ended up cancelling mine and getting a mac mini , I wanted it before xmas and the delivery date ( even for one with modest additions ) was mid Jan at the earliest !! ( They couldn't give me a 100% delivery date )

I thought they'd sorted out all the production problems ?

Oh well , wait for Mk2 then. :(

I just bought a 5.1 upgraded 2009 Mac Pro that was listed on eBay. It's a 3.46 Twelve core with a Geekbench 64 bit multicore score of over 30,000? Yes. Everything else in it is basic components. Total price with shipping was $2408. That's about eight or nine hundred less than the going price for an upgraded 2010.

It's a seller who does the upgrade himself and at least has the courage to post his(?-lol) picture on the auction page.

This will be a dedicated DAW computer so after some initial testing I'll be pulling the HHD drive from slot #1 and installing a 512GB SSD for the OS & applications. I'll probably also pull the optical drive for a total of six available HD slots. I might add a PCIe 256 or larger card for my piano samples.

I have a Dell U3014 30" & I can also use my 2011 2.7 i5 27" iMac display in target mode for now until I figure out the best way to run another 27" monitor as the secondary display.

Want to congratulate all the new 5,1 owners on this thread!

The 5,1's are a great system, huge upgrade options, and lots of internal drives/cards.

I have a mid 2012 5,1 12 core, and am loving it. Its fast as hell and easily handles anything I have thrown at it.

Ordered a stock 6-core nMP w/ AppleCare from Adorama in the US on December 30th. STILL waiting for delivery of the actual computer (got the AppleCare packet on January 2nd). Not been happy with their customer service. They tell me they are having it drop shipped to my directly by Apple, and that it should be shipped on Jan 21st for delivery on the 23rd. Not hopeful that information is actually true. They had no problem taking the money out of my account, though.
