Want to congratulate all the new 5,1 owners on this thread!

The 5,1's are a great system, huge upgrade options, and lots of internal drives/cards.

I have a mid 2012 5,1 12 core, and am loving it. Its fast as hell and easily handles anything I have thrown at it.

No congratts for us 6.1 owners?
I feel sad :(:(

Ive just bought an 8 core mid 2010 5,1 and loving it so far, ive had an imac and macbook pro before but thought it was time to get the daddy of macs. Having a mac that i can upgrade and change is the best thing about it, ive already changed the graphics card and put a PCIE SSD inside, next plan is to upgrade the ram and change the CPU's to the 3.33ghz W3680's.

^^^^Hold the phone there guy. W3680s WILL NOT work in a DUAL CPU Machine, they're for single CPU use only! If your looking for Dual 6 Core 3.33MHz CPUs then you want X5680 CPUs.

Really? I must have mis-read that somewhere then, asside from the x5680 you mentioned, what other CPU's are compatible?

You need something that has 2 QPI Links. So the W36xx series WON'T work, and the best you can get is X5690. If you are looking for something that more cost effective, that should be the X5680 as flowrider said.

Yea i did mis-read something somewhere, cost wise i think i will go for the x5675's, the x5680's are a bit pricey and im not sure if its worth the extra. Im sure the x5675's will be more than enough for anything i will ever do. Im assuming any of these CPU's will run 1333mhz ram? My current ram is 1066mhz, however i am not sure if this is because thats what the ram itself runs at or if its because my current CPU's (E5620's) only support 1066mhz not 1333mhz.

All 5,1 Mac Pros came stock with 1333MHz RAM. However, not all CPUs (like your E5620s) could utilize that speed. If you have the stock RAM, it will run at 1333MHz if allowed by the CPU. However, if the RAM has been upgraded, that's a different story.

BTW, I'm running X5677 (Dual 4 core, 3.46MHz) CPUs, because for what I do, MHz speed is more important than the number of cores. IOW, 8 cores is plenty for me.

I am so glad youve mentioned that, Mhz speed is more important to me too however i always thought i would be going up to 12 cores but its not really necessary, ive searched for the CPU's that you have and there also much cheaper! Happy days i think ill stick with 8 core and go with those, whats the performace like?

About what i expected, not as high a 12 core however i bet its faster than the 12 core X5675 at most things, unless your using an app that utilities all 12 cores, which isnt many.

Yes, look at the single core score compared to the X5675 I just looked up at the Geekbench website.

Why is there such variation in the mac pro's in geekbench?

I was looking at those x5675 benchmarks you listed and some score as high as 29k. If all the cpu's are the same, and we are all using the same mac pro, the cpu benches should all be nearly the same.

What else is effecting the benchmark? vid card? drive system? Its not like people overclock mac pro's.

The amount of RAM will, and how you run it, for example in triple or dual channel mode.

Running Geekbench as the only app after a fresh reboot will yield better results. Spotlight indexing might also affect the performance. So best is to check with Activity Monitor that the CPUs aren't busy with other tasks before you start.

Ordered mine on Sunday (1/12/14) from B&H and it has now "officially" been ordered through Apple. Let's see how long this takes now.

My refurb stock 6 core nMP arrived yesterday and in terms of condition and operation it is perfect.

Sadly after using it for a day we will be returning it as the performance is not really where it should be compared to other machines and it shows a bit of age.
Also not being able to turn off the font smoothing in Yosemite is deal breaker for me personally.

Anyways if anyone is concerned about the condition of refurb machines don't be, it was fine.

Performance was lacking? How so? I mean, you know exactly what you ordered, so in what way didn't it live up to your expectations.

Also, I see the option you're looking for in Yosemite (see the very bottom of the screenshot below) -- I assume it's not doing what you want?

woot!

Hi folks,

Just ordered a refurb 12 core 6.1 (the nMP) with 16 GB ram, 512 SSD and D500s. Very excited.

Now the research begins for a Tbolt hub?

I need to connect my DVI monitors (2) a few esata connections.

Plus, I need a few FW800 to TBolt connectors.

Any recommendations? :)

Cheers,
Keebler

up & running on a 4,1 8x2.26

Hi,

just thought I'd add my new behemoth to the thread:

Stock (apart from 8gb of ram) 2009 8x2.26. Coming from a 2009 2.53 mini it's a bit of a revelation - my first slot-equipped mac since the original 7100 Powermac. After 2 generations of powerbook, then 2 generations of minis, this is a fun new project.

I've gutted 3 external usb2 hard drives (all WD Caviar Green), and installed them in the sleds, wow i hadn't realised how much faster those were.

Boot times are ridiculously faster, and I can crunch through my 142x36MP panorama stitching fast enough that I can tell it's progressing, rather than worrying if the process has stalled.

Upgrades planned are Ram first, then perhaps a pcie ssd and a new graphics card. The tradeoff between AMD and Nvidia - what's the general consensus as to which brand tends to be better for what sorts of work / activity?

One thing - I think the door on it is from a different model - at least the diagram on the inside of the door looks like it might be from a 2008 - is there anything problematic about that in terms of cooling zones etc?

cheers.

How about the HighPoint RocketStor 6351A Thunderbolt 2 I/O Dock or the Elgato Thunderbolt 2 Dock (because it can support 4K monitors) or the CalDigit Thunderbolt Station 2 Interface Expansion Device (TS2-US-60).

Ordered my baseline nMP last night and I am excited to get it! Should be here this Friday and I just got the Shipment Notification. Went refurbished as I have had great luck with Apple's refurbished devices. From the benchmarks online, it seems it will be a bit slower then my current oMP 4,1->5,1 (which I am keeping) on processing, but I am hoping with dual video cards (which just a single one of them would outperform the one in my oMP) FCPX will be able to render faster.

Now I need to hunt for a 512GB flash drive and a 4th DIMM.

Thanks! I've bookmarked them.

So far, I ended up getting some esata to USB 3 cables from Startech. I'm feeling out my requirements as I review which external devices I'll need or can get rid of to consolidate.

This thunderbolt is pretty spanky though. Can't believe the speed. :)
