Hi, I am a Mac Newbie. I am looking at getting a Macbook pro 13" and have done some research on Macs. Since I am new to a macbook, I am looking at refurbished as you guys suggest. I think if I get a refurb, I don't know if I should go for the 2.5 ghz with 4gb (upgradable to 8 gb which i know I would need), and older HDD, OR get the 13", 8 GB ram, 2.4 ghz and flash storage drive. can we upgrade the macbook os to yosemite? It doesnt really say which OS it comes with. Also, I assume that the battery may need replacing fairly soon. Any thoughts about battery?

I will do alot of graphics on my macbook.
Thanks!

Just ordered a 2014 13.3 256gb rMBP, picking up in store tomorrow. Wallet hurts so good right now :)

Just got my new macbook pro retina 15inch mid-2014 on November 5th. So far I am loving this machine. My previous laptop was early 2011 15inch macbook pro.

I got my Macbook Pro base model a week ago...I love it...I have a 13" MacBook Pro from last year and a Macbook air 2012...so I have small medium and large...I would have to say My new 15 " is my favorite...but I do love my 13"

just joined the club. Last week i ordered the Refurbished 15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel i7 with Retina Display it has a 256gig ssd, but that wasn't a issue for me. The ram was the main issue, i wanted one with 16gigs ram. Internal HDD can be upgraded where as the RAM can't.

After xmas ill start looking on line / ebay for a larger ssd drive, and throw it in.

I bought this because i wanted 15" and high resolution screen, this will allow me to use Final Cut Pro X Or Adobe Premiere.. witch ever i decide to start using more and more..

VERY excited! Can't wait !!

Got a 2014 15" base refurb today. I believe it has the LG screen (A019), and there appears to be no yellowing or dead pixels. I may do the retention test in a few days. It has a Samsung SSD. The battery had 3 cycles, so it must be an immediate return. Manuf date was Oct. 14.

Seems to be a good one, so I think I'll keep it. Great upgrade from my 2010 13" MBA!

How do you know who made the screen?

Congrats!

I'm curious why you just didn't spring for the extra $300 for the 2.3GHz with the 512 SSD from late 2013? The 2014 models were only a processor speed bump from 2013 so this model is still faster than the 2014 2.2 model. Plus, with the 2.3GHz model, you get the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M GPU.

I gather from earlier reading posts >

A019 - LG
A022 - Samsung

Question is-- does LG still have retention issues in the mid-2014's?
I have a 2012 15" rMBP. The original LG screen had IR issues. I got it replaced earlier this year with another LG screen and it's been good ever since. Some have gotten Samsung replacements, but then complained they had a yellow tint to them. In the 2014, there are some complaints that the Samsung screens now have IR issues. Look for posts from the member, geekpot.

Here's the tread from the Apple Support forum,

Thanks for the info:
so mine is A022 Samsung,
Just got my new 15.4 rMBP 2.8GH 16GB memory 512 SSD nvidea video it's mid 2014 model but built on 10/31/2014 so it came with IOS 10.10
it replaced my mid 2010 17" MBP
I mis the size of the screen and the vivid that it had,
my new rMBP is perfect no dad or on pixel, no yellow, just perfect,
maybe I was lucky

Congrats!

Not really to sure, I just picked one, it had the ram i wanted. I'm going to be running a thunderbolt 1tb ssd for my video editing, so i wanted 2 thunderbolt new ports.

I don't need my video to render within seconds. Most of the videos i will be doing are 10 min TOPS! maybe the occasional one will be longer etc etc.

Now to buy a cover & new HD camera..:D

I was more curious about this statement that you posted,

The SSDs in the 2013/14 rMBP are PCIe SSDs. They aren't really that cheap yet. A 512 will set you back about $400 on eBay. If you spend $300 extra for the 512 and then sell your existing 256 for $150 it would come out costing you less. It would be like getting the faster process, GPU and 512 SSD for $150.

They didn't have any in stock at that time.. But im not worried.

My main battle is now finding a 2.5" thunderbolt enclosure, so i can buy a 512 or 1tb 2.5" ssd for scratch disc.. I was hoping to find a used Lacie ( orange ) thunderbolt case but i can't find any on ebay.

Know of any ? ( others )

Proud new owner of a 13" rMBP. Best buy was having a deal that put the price $100 under the available student price from Apple. I had to jump on it.

Started looking for a new gadget a few weeks ago. I was set on a Surface pro 3, but I think that it still needs a little work.

I really wanted the 15" rMBP 2013 refurb on the Apple site, but I think a 13" would travel better. And a 13" is fine for my needs, I was trying to talk myself into needing a bigger machine.

Hope to tear into it tonight and decide the fate of my 2012 Lenovo laptop.

I've owned a powerbook and a macbook but didn't hold on to them long. I have an iMac that is the 1st intel model that still runs pretty good.

Excited about my new purchase.

I'll have your old Lenovo :) 13" is a nice machine, I just grabbed a 15"

Because my Macbook Pro 2011 just died after being out of warranty for less than two months (radeongate gpu failure) I just ordered a 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display.

With the following configuration:

• 2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
• 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
• 1TB PCIe-based Flash Storage
• Intel Iris Pro Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory

Pissed about having to deal with hardware failure because of a design flaw, but excited to have a new machine.

ps. i did some quick math and see the 2011 macbook pro that just died worked out to cost me over $100/month. Lol brutal. This new one, at $4200 after applecare and taxes, better last more than 3 years!

Yea I looked at the refurb section after and realized I could have saved a few hundred.

...welp, clicked a Cancel button, clicked an Add to Cart button... you just saved me $572.47 dude. I'm all for a refurb, it's not like I'm going to ever notice the 3 months of use someone else got out of it. And, it'll arrive sooner because it's already built. =] Cheers!

Hi,

After owning various iPhones, iPods and an iPad Air I finally decided to upgrade my computer to the MacBook Pro Retina. Taking into account the cost for a laptop and weighing up the advantages of owning the MacBook vs. other cheaper machines I am very pleased with my new machine.

Quick, simple and sensible - already I can see the advantages over lesser "Windows" based machines.

Now getting to grips with the main reason for purchasing the machine which are endless spreadsheets, presentations and reports I am hoping that by purchasing a superior machine it will last me several years before I need to upgrade.

Look forward to becoming part of the new community!

Rob
