FaceID had been pretty flawless for me until I tried using it tonight in bed after waking up.

There definitely is an "optimal distance" for it to work and eight inches from my face (so I can see the screen without my glasses) was just too close and FaceID wasn't having it. This happened a couple of times and I either entered in my passcode or just held it a bit further away to unlock and then brought it in close again.

Not a huge deal just something to be aware of.

same, I couldn't get it to work at all in bed this morning without my glasses on after just waking up, and I couldn't hold it that far away as I couldn't see without my glasses so another case where it's no use to me

All I had to do was hold it a bit further away for just a second, swipe up (it's fairly obvious when it unlocks even when I'm blind as a bat without my glasses), and then bring it back to where I could see it.

I really don't want to cave and go back to an 8+ day to day but I hope that if the rumours are true about a larger X next year, and with another year of Face ID development, hopefully that will be the winner

Curious how your battery life is X vs 8+

FWIW one of the better Apple analysts out there doesn't think that there will be a Gen 2 FaceID next year.

Why not? This statement makes no sense, sorry. If I pay a certain amount for an item, but feel that the value (e.g. build quality) and user experience does not justify that price, it is perfectly valid to return the item.

This statement is nonsense, too. Because it's an entirely subjective matter if something is worth the asking price or not.

That is a fact, of course. But I am pretty sure future iterations of the X (XI?) will have less issues than the current one.
It’s not subjective....it’s called: markup.
There is not a single phone worth the asking price.

Last time I checked, companies don’t sell products at a loss

"Touch ID is gone.
The LCD screens from your 7+ are gone."

Actually, you can buy phones from Apple with Touch ID and LCD screens right now.
Going forward.
Those two aspects are gone

I don't agree that there isn't a single phone worth is price. The X is an extreme example of not being worth the price.

Give me an example of a phone that was sold at the same price it cost to manufacture....

This is not a subjective topic. It’s logic.

There is no phone worth what is being asked, in parts or specifications....

First of all, you can get phones for free... so surely they are worth free.

Worth is a measure of value, and value has nothing to do with cost. Based on your view, nothing is worth what you pay for it, because no company would produce anything and sell it for no profit. Each person is going to assess value differently. The S-Pen has tremendous value to me, because I have a TabletPC that has a compatible pen and can therefore create and edit pen based notes on both platforms. It may have no value to you. The X vs. the 6s+ I have has no additional value to me, because its basically the same functions other than animoji (which I would put negative value on) and FaceID (which has no more value than TouchID). The display is a wash because its a smaller form factor. If Apple had a similar display on a plus sized iPhone then I would place value on that. So the X, to me, is extremely over priced, especially when you factor in a $549 potential repair bill on the back if you were to drop it. Its bordering on absurdly priced.

Will probably attempt to exchange mine as the color shift with only slight movement is very noticeable. My True Tone is off and I'm not a novice. Work in the industry, had the S6, S7, S8 Plus, and now Note 8 for my work phone and always iPhone for personal.

Came from 7 Plus and love everything about this phone except the panel quality on my device. Form factor reduction was a godsend for me especially since I already carry another giant device.

How would you compare the Note 8 to the X? I'm thinking about possibly picking up the Note.

Size won me over to get the iPhone 8 Plus over the X. The X is a nice phone but for $200 less and actual bigger screen it's a win win for me.

Cost
The money is not an issue for me, but it is one that people sort of misrepresent. Oooohh, a $1000 phone, but the old phones were $700-800 odd dollars, so while it’s more, it’s hardly a big deal.

It's a 20 to 30% increase over an 8+ or 8, so it's something many people can't ignore either. And apart from the screen and camera they're virtually identically spec'd too. Aside from FaceID, which is probably an improvement once you're used to it, I'd say only the camera is a clear cut improvement over the 8+, with dual lens optical stabilisation and better low light shooting. The screen, both have trade offs, the 8+ is lower resolution but has clearer whites and a better colour consistency across viewing angles. The X has higher resolution, better black levels but out of the examples I tried in my local Apples Store also had a red hue*, making whites less accurate and a blue shift at off axis viewing angles. So for that clear extra 20 or 30% you're not getting a clearly better product, which is, I think, why many on here are having second thoughts.

*I don't have a colorimeter, so I can't say for sure the iPhone X screen's whites are less accurate but they looked less accurate to my eye, much redder than an iPhone 8 or iPad Pro's

im not returning my X but I'm getting an 8+ as my daily driver. Too many things don't work for me, Face ID is severely unreliable, and I've reset it 20+ times now, just doesn't work for my use cases. It must hate my face. And the narrowness is too much of a step down from the plus. Also battery life is terrible on mine. I do love the screen though, and the premium feel of the device, and the new gestures I think are excellent, don't miss the home button at all. So I'm going to keep it for when I want a smaller packaged phone in certain situations and use the 8+ as my day to day phone

There are lots of extra features enable by default:::::::::

Disable Background app refresh under settings for apps that TRULEY dont need to be on the whole time in the background. Note:::: newly installed apps have this turned on!!

Got to Location services and switch the apps to “while using” so your location will not always turn on in background and.... under system services .... disable location based ... to off since this uses gps to track location and present you with apps you use in that location. Also no need for homekit if you dont use it.

Another tip is to simply used battery saver.

Also turn off other stuff in settings you dont use. You have to go over the stuff in there or else the battery will drain fast.

lol same here. I rescanned the face id set up scan 1 I have glasses and about a foot away and scan 2 no glass about 1/2 a feet away and it seems better.....BUT if you put your x less than 1/2 a feet it will not unlock! Hope that helps.

I have not touched an X, so you need to take my comments with that in mind. I waited for the X to be announced before deciding to get a Note 8. I was coming from a 6S+ which I had for 2 years.

Since there was no X, I looked at dimensions and realized that the S8 was roughly the same size to screen size as the X. So I played with an S8, S8+, and Note 8 in the store, in comparison with my 6S+. I realized the S8 wasn't the size for me. If there were an X+, I might have considered it, but my god it would have been absurdly priced! I also looked at the 8+, and the boredom factor led me to want to try something different.

I also have a Surface Pro, so the idea of using a pen in OneNote on my phone was very appealing with the S-Pen.

My last (and only) experience with Android prior was an S5. I hated it. It was all the things you hear about regarding Samsung... buggy, laggy, bloated... just not a good experience The Note 8 is none of that. It actually feels very refined and quick.

So from a comparison standpoint....

On the Note 8, you will give up the Apple ecosystem integration - iMessage, FaceTime, Airplay, etc.. Everyone else in my family has iPhones and I've managed to live with this fine. Its mildly annoying, but we are adjusting to other alternatives without it being a big deal. Some of the things we are liking better in fact.

The screen on the Note 8 is gorgeous, seems to be better from reports of slight angle color shift on the X, and is symmetrical (no notch on one side in landscape). It also has a better screen to size ratio so less aggregate bezel. The X screen I'm sure is quite good as well. But remember the X really aligns with the S8 in size, not the Note 8. Apple has no direct competitor.

Speed tests show them to be about the same, with the exception of 4k video editing on the X being faster (I would never do this so not an issue).

I like having FPS and Iris on the Note 8 vs. just Face on the X. They each have use cases they work better in.

I am finding I really like the Gear S3 over Apple Watch, which shocked me frankly.

Don't listen to the Samsung bashing about their software being bad, laggy, etc.. Its total BS on the Note 8. I find the whole package to be quite refined and a great experience. I will say I've not had more fun with a smartphone in years than I have having learning all about how I can use and tailor the Note 8. If I got an X, after a week or so I'd realize I paid $1250 for a device that was roughly the same as what I already had... and had serious buyers remorse. In fact, I would have just kept my 6S+.

I would like to give an honest opinion. Just like everybody else, I was very excited about the X. I got up at 2:15 in the morning to pre-order the phone for myself. It was very interesting how Apple made sure that none of the phones are on display so no one really knew what it would feel like in their hand and kept telling us how big the screen was. When I first got the phone it was one of those things where I really was trying to fall in love with it. It felt small right away. I noticed the screen was very very narrow and the plus definitely seem like you’ll be able to fit more on it. I decided to go to Best Buy to return the phone and get a plus and everybody there was calling me crazy and making me feel bad. Let’s be realistic, is it always easy to go from watching a 46 inch screen in your bedroom To then going to a 32 inch? I always gravitate towards the bigger phone I think the X plus would be a perfect balance of the big screen with the new swipe gestures which I seem to really love in the multitasking. All in all I got the 8+ which is only a month old so I can’t understand why everybody makes it sound like the X is so much better. I love the 8+ and would never go back to regular X. I came from a Galaxy s8 plus which is a fantastic phone.. Best screen possible.. The 8 plus is def a good transition coming from a galaxy 6.2 inch screen as opposed to a narrow 5.8 inch screen. It is all what you enjoy. I personally felt that watching videos on the x in the youtube app was the final straw in returning the phone. Watch a video on the 8 plus then the x in the youtube app and look at the difference. I hope everyone appreciates my non biased opinion.
