So much whining from The Verge lately. They are the worst technology website in terms of tracking and advertising at the moment. Good riddance.

Did you even read the article? Nilay specifically said that the Verge had the ability to adapt. It seemed like a well thought out piece about the impacts this could have on the web at large, rather than whining about the impact on the Verge.

Ads have gotten out of control, and the sites have only themselves to blame.

Eventually the percentage of people using content blockers will increase and they will have to re-think their strategy of auto-playing, half page, animated gif gimmicks you care not for. Same thing happened with Pop Up ads in the 90's, who have since gone the way of the DoDo.

I did not read it beyond the first couple of paragraphs, mostly because of the bickering that happened throughout the last couple of weeks, but I did now and I disagree with you. It’s a poorly written and overly dramatic piece and it clearly shows that the author, and The Verge by extension, just doesn’t get it or doesn’t care. They don’t get why people embrace blockers and they don’t engage with their generally tech-savvy readers on a truthful level. In this piece they mask the issue and even attempt to absolve themselves of their own responsibility by pointing the finger to “Silicon Valley” and by playing the victim. They don’t offer any solutions of their own. I am generally open to whitelist websites I like, but The Verge betrays that trust shamelessly.

This thread should be updated to a voting poll which blocker is best.
Why do we need a poll? This is an information thread.

People should do their own research, make an informed decision, and then purchase the app that they believe best fits their needs. Looking at some forum poll should not even enter into the aforementioned equation, in my opinion.

So what's the best content blocker at the moment?
There is no consensus. Many people are happy with Crystal, Blockr, and Peace, or a combination thereof. Crystal and Blockr are $0.99 USD. I believe Peace is $2.99 as is 1Blocker.

Purify has been briefly mentioned, albeit not as glowing as Crystal, for what its worth.

There will be many more content blockers coming to the app store. I am sure several of them will be free, if budget is tight at the moment.

Why would you whitelist your favourite sites? Makes no sense, you'd want no adverts on the sites you visit the most.
If you like a site enough and its ads are not too bad without blocker then you can allow so you are supporting the site. It's sites that get carried away should be blocked.

So you support your favorite artists using drugs as well, because they're rock stars, right?

Crystal has made web browsing so pleasant. Sites load faster and I don't accidentally click on ads. Worth the $$$.

I might even upgrade my 5S just to use this app.

Then he means that The Verge will have block proof ads.

Many sites have guilt trips built in now. They detect ads arent being shown through javascript (by checking the DOM and if it's missing, flag it) and will either throw up a guilt banner or in the future, just blank out the page with a "We see you are blocking advertisements... These ads pay our bills..." type of message.

Hello. I have an iPhone 5S, but the Content Blocking tab is not showing up in Settings > Safari. Any idea why? All reports say it should work on this phone. Upgraded to iOS 9 yesterday. I must be missing some step. Thanks for any help.
