Great post. I just hope 4.2 battery isn't affected like the betas.

We got a lot of apple and Ipad haters here at work. They just don't understand that Apple is on top of their game.

The Ipad battery life is ridiculous! I have never gotten mine down below 60 percent yet.

There is nothing else out there like it. And it will only get better when the Ipad 2 comes out next year.

I really like the new macbook airs...but I would have jumped on one if it had the dual core A9 chip...then we all know the battery life would be crazy!

People are just apple haters because they are simply designing the best stuff these days. Everybody else is scrambling to come up with good designs. Apple is hardware king!

I drain my battery entirely every day. That is how much I love using this thing!

It certainly doesn't last as long as it did when I got it, I am probably at about 100 cycles at least. Not that I care, as soon as ipad 2 comes out I am buying it and repurposing this one to something else.

I feel the same way, especially if it gives us some decent new features. What I want to see:

Active Multitasking
Possibly dual core A4, or higher clocked (I know this is a pipe dream)
New, more powerful graphics chip
Same battery life (Would be hard to achieve with active multitasking)
Mini-Finder (just have like a home folder where you can put things, no terminal or anything like that)

I can still blow through about 3 movies on my iPad and get about another hour of light use afterward.

I have three hours of comute every day, shared with four other line managers, thankfully a company vehicle and driver. One of my colleagues often comments on my iPad (3G 64Gb) as being a "cute little toy".

This week we all got fast balled by the VP to produce a presentation & provide supporting documentation for the next morning. We have a strict no use of company computers in vehicles due to security & safety reasons etc. So looking like a long night for the boy`s, only my "cute little toy" knocked out a top notch presentation & supporting document (Pages) during the hour and a half drive from the office to home.

As I arrived home I showed my colleague who was bemoaning the up coming nights work, "cute little toy" maybe, however while you are sweating over your Dell tonight my presentation is already in Kuala Lumpur, and I will be in the company of a lady with great assets tonight :D I guess cat`s out the bag, as now they know why my presentations are just so much better than the usual PowerPoint serving :p

I think we have a convert, you know it makes sense. iPad does rule, as for the assets, well it`s a family show here ;)

Cool story Mr. Bond:p

Posting this from my iPad :D

Haha! I never get sick of saying that!:)

Two things: First, the battery life has completely spoiled me. Even watching the MBA announcement, I was like, "Meh, 7 hrs is not as much as I hoped..." There's no going back! I want 10 hrs out of everything! Ok, second, after spending several months with the iPad, I really run out of ways to explain to people when they ask, exactly WHY it's so good at what it does. Anyone else? I mean usually I just ask them, What do you want to do? Yes, you CAN do that! So, I completely agree that you wont understand till you really use one. Yes, I'm a big fan! Haha!

And yes, I'm posting this from my iPad :D

What a great thread!

Isn't it amazing that even though functionally the iPad truly isn't all that different from an iPhone, yet just the screen size makes all the difference in the world.

Right now I'm sitting on the screen porch reading an iBook on it, using Remote to control iTunes from the MBP upstairs to play background music through the Airport Express connected to amplifier and speakers out here, while I occasionally respond to emails and check into favorite web sites. Now if there were just an app to refill my iced tea glass....

Yeah, I remember when it first came out and the naysayers were all "It's just a big iPod touch!". I was thinking, Yeah, but that'll be awesome :) And it is!

When people tell me that my ipad is just an oversized iPod touch. I will tell them of this post. It's great ain't it.
:apple: <3

When people say that to me I just tell them, " Oh and I guess a swimming pool is just an oversized bath tub too". That usually shuts them up.

I was just on a 15 hour flight from Chicago to Hong Kong. I was able to watch several movies and read part of a book. The iPad fits easily on the fold down traytable in coach and I don't have to worry about the fellow in front of me suddenly reclining his seat. I could even use the iPad during a meal. I am using it now in a hong kong hotel. Fortunately I brought along a wireless router because many hotels still use the Ethernet cables.

It really is awesome.

Jobs was ridiculed for it, but I just watched the D8 video with the Interview with him and Walt Mossberg and Jobs was right. The device is "Magical." The way you use it and the way you can now use the internet and browse media is amazing. It's a total game changer that not many people seemed or seem to realise.

All you have to do is download Press Reader and Zinio to see what the iPad can really do. An actual newspaper delivered to you every morning. The same paper you would buy in the street and you read it the same way. Turning the page with your hand and reading the ads, everything. Magazines delivered to you at great prices. And at the same time, it solves a major issue for publishers and could end up saving them.

Steve said it himself. This is an uncomfortable device for many people (including himself he said) who grew up in the PC era. It won't be easy to move away from the PC. But this is a paradigm shift make no mistake and there are very young people now who will use devices in the manner of the iPad and it will be the computer experience they come to know as standard.

Pft its a good device far from magical! This is coming from an owner btw. I cannot believe how many people repeat that asinine statement

"Magical" "revolutionary" its all marketing propoganda.

Just as the OP was laughing inside as people scrambled for power outlets, they would be laughing at you if you needed to print, burn a cd, Chat with someone while checking out link in safari.

I repeat, iPad is a good device/accessory. I just wouldnt toot your horn too much. k>?

Yes, because when I'm at a coffee shop with an iPad, I would always feel the need to print, burn a cd or chat with someone on my iPad.

That's precisely at what I was getting at

I think it's great how Apple takes old concepts, cleans them up, and makes them popular.

Some of us have been using all-day web slates for almost a decade. Usually for enterprise and field usage, but sometimes for personal browsing as well.

For example, a favorite was the ViewSonic series of Windows CE based slates. Instant-on, excellent browser (not the wimpy WinMo one), available with all sorts of comms and options.

Here's one from 2004... the ViewSonic 100.

10" touchscreen, 2.5 lb magnesium body, Citrix, Java, etc. It was neat for its time, but unfortunately underpowered in the CPU department. Apple was smart to wait until all the technology fell into place.

No idea is new, everyone has thought of everything. Isaac Newton didn't invent the telescope, he made it better. Apple didn't invent the tablet, it made it better.

You can print with the iPad. There is no point to burn discs anymore. In a couple of weeks or so multitasking will be out so you can chat with whomever still using instant messaging and browse the Internet.

Battery life isn't as good on the 4.2 betas, but maybe it's just the fact 4.2 is still in beta that's causing this. Hopefully not the multitasking, which theoretically shouldn't have a big effect on battery life.

I get a kick out of people who say, "OMGBBQWTH! Teh iPad cantz burn the CD!!!1!". (English Translation - My word good chap, it seems this device of yours can not create a CD.)

Nope. It can't burn a CD, or use a USB Flash Stick, or Mouse, or Floppy Drive, or Punch Card either... It doesn't even have a file system!

That's okay. All of my documents are neatly organized, tagged, and searchable in the Cloud. I can share them with a couple taps to anyone in my address book. (a few more taps if I need to type an email or Twitter id.)

In a lot of ways, the iPad is a couple years ahead of it's time. I think it confuses a lot of people.

I love your story about the coffee shop experience. It is exactly the kind of "use case" situation that Apple probably researched when building the iPad.

I can typically fly from east coast to the west coast and back with an iPad without charging battery. =)

Trade off

I too love the battery life of my iPad. Every time I start a grumbling monologue about how heavy it is, I have to remind myself about the 10h. I wouldn't change that equation at all. Especially since I live in a city that has 2-3 hour power outages every day.

Someone who's still living in the nineties (cd's? Come on...) won't understand how new technologies work. Let alone use and appreciate it.

Print will be available in 4.2.

I haven't burned a CD in years.

With IM+ you can chat and browse in the in-app browser. You can even let YouTube links play while you're chatting with someone.

And even that will soon be moot with 4.2. I can't wait!

While I admit I have burned a CD fairly recently, in the past 7 years, the only thing I've burned to CDs are Linux distro .iso's.

That's kinda... not the point [for the iPad] isn't it? ;)

No reason to burn CDs those days otherwise.

I don't know that I'm getting that sort of battery life out of mine. I hope nothing is wrong with it. I took the time to skin it, so I really don't want to replace it. But I'll be selling it for a new one when they add a camera anyway.

What are you getting? What are your settings?

We are currently in the middle of organizing our boss' trip to Japan. The other night, we were hanging out at a bar when our contact in Japan texted us using AIM Messenger on my iPad 3G. (stooopid time difference, dontcha know) We chatted over AIM inbetween drinks, and hashed out a few key details.

Could have done this on an iPhone too, if we had one, but the iPad's monthly plan costs so much less. A dumb phone + iPad works very well for us.

Could have done this on a notebook... oh no, they need really expensive monthly contract plan to get 3G connectivity, and probably would have drawn the attention of everyone else at the bar.
