My iPhone 2G remained unlocked after the update, as it uses the baseband unlock, but now I can't activate, so I can only make 'emergency calls'. I don't jailbreak for the apps just for the activation. Is there an alternative way to activate an iPhone with 3.1?

Can anyone else confirm this problem? I will add a temporary warning to the FAQ until I get confirmation.

To the OP.

WHen the very first 3.1 beta came out, I updated my 3gs to the beta. I then however was able to downgrade to 3.0. I do have both my iBEC and iBSS files as well as a text document of my ECID number and the purplerainday file.

Will I still have a jailbreak or no?

You can't downgrade iPhone 3G's firmware (baseband) if you don't have the correct bootloader.

Just a slight clarification, firmware != baseband. :) You can downgrade firmware (not yet on a 3GS) but you cannot downgrade baseband (small exception there as well).

You should be able to jailbreak, yes. To be honest, I'm not sure when the new baseband was introduced; but if it was introduced with the first beta, you will be unable to unlock.

wow, they might not be able to unlock ever?

imo thats dumb move on Apples part....they going to lose buisness from the people who are buying iPhones for use on another carrier....granted its not ATT, but its still Apple selling a iPhone.

good info though, thanks

Actually an iPhone costs a whole lot more than 199$ but closer to 500-600$.
AT&T subsidize the price. Hence it makes sense from apple's viewpoint but
not mine personally.

Several people have had problems downgrading their 3G and jailbreaking. It seems if you downgrade in recovery mode you will get into an error 1015 loop. I am told that if you put your iPhone in DFU mode before downgrading you will get this error once, but will not get into a loop.

Second, it seems that people are still unable to jailbreak even after successfully downgrading to 3.0.1. I'm not sure why this is so, but I am looking into it. If anyone can share some insight, I would be grateful.

I have updated the FAQ to reflect these two points.

The only way to successfully downgrade is to put the phone in DFU mode AND use redsnow to get to the springboard. For me when i tried going down to 3.0 from 3.1 beta, redsnow worked but never gave me a cellular signal, purplerain however did work.

Its because of the higher baseband :/

Are you able to jailbreak after the downgrade? I understand that you can't unlock...

The only way to reach the springboard is to jailbreak but yes theoretically you should be able to.

If you can't then something must have gone wrong in dfu mode. I know because this same thing has happened to me when going from the 3.0 beta back to 2.2.1 (different OS i know but same general idea)

Actually firmware/baseband can be the same thing, you just have to specify it's the baseband's firmware. Vice-versa, you can say main firmware or main software.

have a 2G iPhone..

Since i have a 2G on 3.1, I need to downgrade to 3.0.1 and then unlock/jailbreak, correct? The baseband will be fine if I do so? I know I cannot unlock from 3.1 since the baseband was updated.. Thanks

Actually, the only reason you can't unlock your 2G with 3.1 is that unlocking requires a jailbreak and there is no 3.1 jailbreak yet. The 2G is permanently Pwned, and does not require a specific baseband to unlock.

From MuscleNerd's tweet about 40 minutes ago... (Member of DevTeam)

@avsqz ah sorry no, there's no soft unlock anywhere that can deal with anyone who's run Apple's official 3.1 :( We've been trying to warn).

So, as of now, it looks like if you updated to 3.1, there will be no unlock for 3.1 !!

However, I think you will be able to JB.

Yes, it's pretty clear that for 3GS users the situation is as follows

Upgrade to 3.1 while preserving baseband for future unlock: Soon, via updated PwnageTool.
Downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0 or 3.0.1 with iBEC and iBSS: Soon, via solution Saurik is working on.
Jailbreak 3.1: Uncertain. Probably in a few weeks; maybe sooner if you believe the chronicdevteam.
Downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0 or 3.0.1 with iBEC and iBSS: Some time off, maybe never.
Unlock if upgraded to 3.1 via iTunes or shipped with 3.1: Probably never.

I have a few clarifications that I think are true (I'm still trying to sift through all the info out there too):
Upgrade to 3.1 while preserving baseband for future unlock: Soon, via updated PwnageTool, if you have your iBEC and iBSS, or Saurik has your ECID SHSH.
Downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0 or 3.0.1 with iBEC and iBSS: Soon, via solution Saurik is working on, but baseband won't be downgraded.

I haven't seen confirmation about the iBEC and iBSS files regarding their use for newer firmware. My incomplete understanding is that your 3GS has a unique key (ECID), for any firmware to be installed on a 3GS the firmware hash needs to be signed using Apple's servers with your ECID as the public key. Those hashes are then used by iTunes in conjunction with your 3GS to allow/deny the particular firmware. It makes sense to me that the downgrades need previously saved iBEC/iBSS since Apple won't generate those for < 3.1 firmware any more. However, I'm not sure if that applies to modified 3.1 firmware. I guess a lot has to do with how exactly the modified 3.1 firmware will be assembled by PwnageTool/whatever.
