I have a few clarifications that I think are true (I'm still trying to sift through all the info out there too):

Yes, baseband is not downgradeable.

I do not think you need that information to upgrade while preserving your baseband; I think you will only need those files for jailbreaking 3.1.

I'd expect that depends on how the dev team finds a way in. An injection vector into a running iPhone + write access to the OS partition might not need the iBEC/iBSS. A modified ipsw probably would.

Please excuse my ignorance, I've on only had IPhone 3gs on T-Mo for about a month. I guess by pure luck I bought one of the last 3gs 3.0.1 from the apple store. I've JB/unlocked it and it works great. However, I did not save any files for future use/reference. Does that mean if I ever brick my phone and I have to restore it to factory settings I won't be able to JB/unlock it because Itunes won't load 3.0.1 onto the phone? Is this correct?

Thanks experts!

Correct.

Just be careful and dont download things if you dont trust them.

With a little bit of caution you'll be fine. I doubt 3.2 will bring anything that new either

Wow. Thanks.

I can still safely sync with Itunes as long as I don't hit "upgrade software" button?

I'm really bummed that I may never be able to jailbreak again. I went to the Dev-Team blog before I upgraded to 3.1 and it just had the usual warnings about not upgrade if care about unlocking, which I don't. I didn't see anything about backing up iBEC and iBSS files. :( Oh well maybe they will figure out a way to do it eventually. I'm going to especially miss having 5 icons on my dock!

Just so you all know, I seriously hate myself for clicking that little update button.

I just got a 3GS a few days back and wasn't to educated on wether or not it could be jailbroken on 3.0.1 or not. I upgraded anyways. Ahh! Even though this is a huge upgrade from my 2G 8 gig phone, my 32gig 3GS feels lacking. Now, does that sound crazy or what?

Oh well, I guess it will only be a matter of time before 3.1 is jailbroken. Hopefully. Gulp. :D Thanks Dev Team!

IH8sn0w on twitter claims to have a way to downgrade the 3GS back to 3.0...

http://www.twitlonger.com/show/gmsf

Actually, no. He claims if you capture 3.1 iBEC and iBSS files he can convert them to 3.0 files. He doesn't explain how he does this. And he does not claim you will be able to downgrade to 3.0.x. In fact, the problem with this whole concept is that if you follow the steps he gives you you will permanently lock your baseband and you will lose your jailbreak.

Finally, it appears his real purpose here is to get people to buy him an iPhone 3GS. Which makes me wonder: how does he know he can do this for the 3GS if he doesn't even own one?

In short: this is a scam you shouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole.

Very well said.

With that I will add...if you have updated, like me, it looks like you are just going to have to sit back and wait.

Thanks! I read all of his stuff, too, and it sounded a little fishy. I'll just wait and hope that they are able to find a solution for those of us on 3.1.

Updated to add information about Saurik's 3.1-->3.0 downgrade solution. For those interested, the link is here. Remember that this only works for those who clicked "Make my life easier" in Cydia between Sunday night and Wednesday morning. This method also will work for a 3.0 restore if you should need it.

Factory unlocked iPhone 3GS

Hi guys and gurus, a n00b here so sorry if I'm stating the obvious...

I need to clear myself on two things. I live in Malaysia, and fortunately the iPhones selling here are all officially unlocked. I bought an iPhone 3GS during the 3.0 phase and my sister would buy one post 3.1 era. My still 3.01 iPhone 3GS is jailbroken and have its ECID stored on file in Cydia. So I have a simple question. I want to upgrade to 3.1, would I be able to jailbreak to use Cydia and the other goodies (without unlocking since I'm already factory unlocked)? And since my sister would definitely be getting one with 3.1 preloaded, would her iPhone be jailbreak-able? (again no need unlocking).
