A bad deal is my 2019 16" MBP that I paid over $2400.

I won't use the 16" MBP since the M1 Mini replaced it.
Intel MBP was huge waste of money IMO.

At least the 24" M1 iMac will be worth every penny paid: $1299

I feel the same. I paid nearly AU$5000 for a MBP16 (32GB/1TB/5500M) that performs generally worse than my M1 Mini at a third of the price. It's still a nice laptop (and better than the current M1 MBP in a few aspects), but performance per dollar is way better on the M1 Macs now.

I'll probably hang on to it because I have some software that won't migrate to Apple Silicon, but it's definitely not the best purchase I've made in terms of long-lasting value for money.

Ordered the baseline new iMac (added the touch id keyboard and the track pad) to replace my 2014 macbook pro.

I think I am the target market. I don't do anything particularly pro, although I will install ableton on it, and will use it mainly for academic writing and reading, browsing, media consumption. It seems like it is going to give me a very nice experience of doing these sorts of things, and I think that's all a lot of people want. I can't think of a situation in which I need more than two peripherals plugged into it..

Honestly if it's just the internal drive I'd suggest limping along with booting/operating from an external fast SSD for a while until the upper-tier larger iMacs transition to Apple Silicon.

Right now isn't a good time to replace a 27" imac IMHO

So update - the guy at the Apple store ran some diagnostics and claimed there was nothing wrong with my iMac, hardware-wise. So they would do a fresh reinstall for me.

A short while later, I get a call and they tell me that they are having problems with the reinstall because the iMac keeps rebooting at the install screen. So it may not get done today.

At a shopping mall now waiting till dinner time.

The wait continues…

M1 in an iMac 24" starts at $1299 with only 2 USB4 ports. Man, this is just sad at this point. 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. Horrible deal.

Now the next step up, $1499. You can same RAM and SSD but 2 more NORMAL USB C ports and ethernet(lol). Again I know it comes with a 4.5 display but you can get a decent PC with a 4k HDR monitor for less and with upgradeable parts.

Please if macOS is not needed don't get this iMac. Its full of crap.

I don’t really understand why people feel they need to make these posts. Just because it is not right for your needs, it does not necessarily mean that is a bad design or will not sell well. The new M1 24” iMac is probably not aimed for the vast majority of users that post on a mac rumours forum like this.

I am likely to buy one ? No - I am waiting for the larger screen M1x ( or what ever next gen M1 chip Apple call it) version.

In reality it is a huge upgrade for the machine that it was designed to replace, and for the casual user that it is aimed at, I am sure it will be a hit, not full of crap as suggested by the OP, mind you I can think of something that was full of crap.

Look, I also have my own deceptions regarding the new iMac (chin, no Apple logo on the chin, white bezels, bigger bezels than I thought, lack of ports, etc.), BUT...

Let's be real for a second.

First of all, they could have included a 20% slower M0 chip in Mac Minis (which would have been totally OK performance-wise for this market) and the same M1 chip that we know in iMacs, and you wouldn't be deceived by the performance of the iMac. You're looking at it relatively to the Mac Mini, not in an absolute way. Did you try an M1 computer? I did, and boy is this thing a killer.

Second thought : Try to build a PC with the same features, performance and build quality. You'll have to pick two out of the three.

I'm not getting this iMac either, for everything I do with it, I'll wait for M1X. But honestly, the value of this iMac is in fact astonishing, and will hold better than any other computer through time.

Can I use the 24"iMAC screen in slave mode? Means, can I connect my business windows laptop to it and use the screen? This would be heaven...
Look into Luna and some similar products that are working to recreate Target Display Mode.

Tend to think the same 😆 24" iMac isn't for me, however they are going to fly of the shelves. They are fun, if not playful, M1 it's gonna be fast. New iMac is not without issues, but for the intended audience they will be pretty solid machines that will likely serve a good few years.

Most simply don't need some upgradable behemoth, nor remotely care. Port constrained yes, RAM 8GB is still adequate for the majority and storage LOL will just be a matter of time before someone markets a drive caddy that clips on to the rear of the stand. Same as my own M1 MBP, I don't want to waste money on Apple's inhouse upgrades unless they are of actual benefit and that means revenue...

Q-6
I think you are exactly right that for the intended audience they will be pretty solid machines that will likely serve a good few years. And that intended audience, I'm guessing, doesn't need ports for what would they plug into them? Although (and I've said this before on the forum) the 24" iMac disappoints me and I won't be buying one, I can't doubt that Apple will have a big hit with them.

I'd consider this instead. Great deal considering AMD 5800X 8-core 16-thread CPU is $450 so for $550 you get HP Pavilion TP01-2066 pre-build desktop with AMD Zen 3 5700G 8-core 16-thread APU with iGPU, 16GB DDR-4 and 256GB SSD.

Does it run MacOS? No? Then what's the point?

Ahhh, I getcha - it's another opportunity for you to remind us Apple users on an Apple centric forum on how much you dislike Apple...

Yeah, tower vs AIO, the HP is louder, bulkier, comes with wired peripherals, no Thunderbolt. If you're looking for a budget gaming box, this isn't bad. Still, M1 manages to hold its own pretty well considering it draws a fraction of the power. I'm excited to see what Johny's team is going to do next.

Also, I hope the rumors are true that Apple will bring colors back to the MacBook lineup.

I like the colors but wished they would have not used the pastels on the front. The back colors are very nice.

I’d consider joining an AMD forum. It’s a great deal considering people there prefer windows and Linux systems. For the record I love AMD but I love macOS more.

Maybe you should subscribe to ETA Prime (YouTube channel linked above). He uses Apple but isn't a blind brand fanboy and doesn't spread misinformation.

Maybe I do already? Still doesn’t change what I said. Not everyone here thinks 8=16 or whatever else you’re referring to. But anything that is not macOS related is pretty irrelevant to these forums.

Well, the OP is both right and wrong. The new 24" iMac is fine for most users, but pitiful for some niches. Useless for me, for example. What really ticks me off is that I *like* 24" monitors. And I bet the non pitiful configurations will only be available in 48" or something like that. Plus a Mac Pro that will be totally overkill even for power users/developers and priced accordingly.

Edit: this thread got shown to me on the front page or I'd have never noticed it and posted :)

For the common general user, ethernet was not as common as people here think. And now with Wifi 6, its going to get less common. Wifi 6 has replaced 90% of the ethernet cables I had. It still costs too much for 10 gigabit ethernet, so wifi 6 having gigabit works.

Also, the M1 SoC competes with an i9-9900k. General users just browsing Facebook or using webcam calls do not need more speed. Its actually overkill for them.

Can someone confirm if the two USB-C/Thunderbolt ports are two controllers - like the M1 Mac mini?
