I had that happen once on another device. I wound up putting a screen protector on over the mark, which made it invisible. Obviously it was still there underneath, but I couldn’t see it. Maybe that would work for you.

I would be very upset as well. For this device, I an using a little microfiber cloth that I lay on the keypad before I close screen.

I do the microfiber trick because I like to have one with me and this is a nice secondary effect. Never had a problem with it falling out - the case closes too tightly for that to happen.

Since the iPad doesn't move when closed, I still don't know how they are being scratched. Just make sure there is no debris when closing. Just a quick hand brushoff.

I wondered if slight amount of grit of any kind combined with pressure from hands carrying a closed iPad w/keyboard might be the culprit.

I have the M4 iPad Pro 11" with the new magic keyboard. I treat the thing really carefully and it's only been out of the case a couple of times in the house... and yet... and yet... the bloody screen has little scruff scratches in the bottom right corner, and one little chip .. I have zero idea how it got there. I'm prepared to admit it might have been accidental (since I don't have perfect recollection) but I've never had this with the many previous iPads.

They are mostly only visible under bright light / day light.

I was worried about this, for the first time put a $9 screen protector on my
iPad.
Same here. Very simple to put on and they don’t mess with the clarity at all. Would hate to see a scratch on the screen of my $1,000+ device when I could have easily prevented it for under $10 🤷‍♂️

Edit: Damn, tempered glass protector increased the reflections a lot compared to the naked screen. Wondering if I should order a matte glass protector or just roll naked and use AppleCare+ if needed 🤔

That's why I want a screen protector on mine
When I was asking for recommendations, a lot of replies were saying that a screen protector is not needed and how the screen is strong enough to withstand knocks and bumps!

What screen protector do you use btw?

It's annoying that Apple doesn't sell or install them like they do for the phones. Installing a large screen protector at home is a dust battle (although I'm sure others will say it's easy).

i dont like screen protectors so i use a thin microfiber cloth to cover the screen. this keeps the keys or any debris from reaching the screen. the cloth is long enough to cover the back camera section when closed. i keep/carry this in a backpack daily. macs also come with a thin sheet from the factory. this cloth is just as thin as that and works well for both. ive been doing this for years...

I dislike glass screen protectors because of their reflectivity - threw my last one away. I do like having a lightweight microfiber cloth with me and I just lay it over the keyboard and trackpad area when I close the case - causes no harm and solves the case rubbing problem.
Have you tried Paperlike (paperlike.com) screen protectors? I have one on my 12.9 M1 and it seems pretty good. A little pricey but I think worth it.

I personally don't feel the need for a protector - I had tried tempered glass as being easier to clean fingerprints from. After many years of tablet and phone ownership, I have yet to have a reason for wishing I had used a protector.

I've been doing this for years with Macbooks. I use a screen protector on my iPad, so I don't need it for that.

No issues with mine. Had the old MKB for years and got the new one too. Dust isn’t scratching screens. Don’t eat food over it. Look after your stuff.

You should all be carrying a brush with your iPads so that you can wipe any lose dust or dirt before closing. It would avoid any scratches. Spend the $6 and get a mini brush like I have. I use it constantly when using my Air and I thoroughly wipe down the keyboard and screen and the entire laptop before closing the lid. Dust will damage the keyboard if it gets under the keys.
