Rumor is next year will have no port, remember.

No, that is not "the rumor". This is just idle speculation by people who keep thinking this is even remotely a realistic possibility... people's whos limited scope of understanding extends to: "well if the headphones are wireless and charging is wireless than the port can be removed".

Nope. The port serves way more purpose than that. And will be around for many, many more years of iPhone.

I only care about transferring data over a cable to iPhone once a year, and that's when I do a Backup and Restore locally when I get a new phone, because it contains more data than iCloud.

That said, if it's limited to 2.0 Speeds, would it be faster to sync over Wi-Fi?

Nope, because 2.0 is still 480 Mbps and Wi-Fi sync is rarely ever better than 100-300 Mbps.
Yes. It IS faster if you have a prober router. Also USB 2.0 never hits 480Mbps for me, I see more like 30MB/s +-5MB/s, which is only half of the theretical bandwith.

The actual real rumor from a news story I read about a year ago was that one premium model with no ports is being worked on and somehow that got turned into all iPhones are going port-less. ;)

I think they are done investing in the iPhone ports. Rumor is next year will have no port, remember. So they are not upping Lightning and they are skipping USB C now that they have pioneered an excellent wireless fast charge magnet for 15W charging. I think for certain we will be hearing all about wireless upgrades as we go.

yep, within a year or two Apple is ditching ALL the ports. i didn't believe it when the rumors started but with the MagSafe and 15W charging it seems a safe bet. all kinds of complications though as many devices use the port, not the least of which is nearly all of the millions of users with CarPlay in their vehicle. wireless car play is missing almost everywhere.

- Wireless CarPlay is precisely no where.
- Wireless debugging and development barely works.
- Wireless syncing fails very often and the only way to get it working again...is to plug in a device.
- There is no such thing as wireless recovery. This is a disaster with Apple Watch STILL after 5 years, and has done nothing but demonstrate that such a thing can never be brought to iPhone.

They are eons away from a world where iPhone can have no data port at all.

This idea is from one of the best at predicting Apple's direction and supply decisions, who is often correct on what and when to expect their supplied parts to become products. And I am sure it will be around for years, but that doesn't mean they aren't also near finding a way to get rid of it. It only takes one SKU without the port to show they are done with it, even if we know they can't ditch it overnight.

Still USB 2.0 transfer speeds. So they want us to edit RAW images and 4K HDR/DV videos on phone itself. But they also need to be transferred to PC/Mac for further tuning. But at USB 2.0 transfer speeds, a 20 GB uncompressed video will take:

20 GB x 1024 MB / 28 MBps = 731 sec (12 Minutes)

But on 3 year old Google Pixel 2 which supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 speeds over USB-C:

20 GB x 1024 MB / 200 MBps = 102 sec (1 Min and 42 sec)

I find this downright disgusting. I am sure fans here will defend USB 2.0 speeds saying that how Apple is saving the earth by being carbon neutral and slow speeds are for our own good... whatever spin they can put on it.

But I will still find this downright disgusting.
Lighting is the most shameful thing about iPhone, is a slap in your face when transferring large video files to your computer, Apple haters would laugh to death on you when doing that.

I deal a lot with this as I use high bitrate videos a lot, and this is quite frustrating.

Just to remind, USB 2 is 20 years old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a computer 5 years old is vintage for Apple, but USB2 is good enough to be in their flagship product!

"iPhone 16S: this is the best iPhone ever, transfer data as slow as your 25 years old iPod"

please, anyone at CNET/Macrumors/anymacnews can write this headline with iPhone 13???

Kinda strong word. I will use disgusting for the current political climate.

I agree outdated transfer speed. I totally agree because it’s so slow when I transfer songs. It’s pretty ridiculous in this day and age.

I bet you with the magsafe standard, wireless transfer will be their next “innovation” and they will not upgrade the wired transfer speeds.

Different issue, but I'm kinda wondering what I'm going to do when Apple finally goes portless and they still haven't made WiFi sync more reliable. Like you, I transfer songs from my computer to the phone.

As it is, WiFi sync is horrible.

I have to agree, I miss the USB-C port from my Pixel 4XL. I never used it for data transfer, but it was nice to have one style of cable that did everything.

I guess for data transfer, Airdrop is your best bet. I think it is faster than via lightning. I agree at least the "PRO" models should have gone USB-C. Maybe next year the base models will be portless and the "pro" models will be USB-C?

LOL - My Mom uses the word "disgusting" in what I would consider all the wrong contexts. Very funny. I don't ever say anything, I just let her ramble on. 🤣

Yes I know right. I hear MagSafe is able to transfer data so that might be the solution. I’d rather get ultra fast song transfer using an airdrop like technology.

They may go with "no ports" in the future. But maybe they implement a smart connector for data transfer or something to that nature. Would that really be port-less if they did that?!

When i lost my virginity, it was with a girl who smelled worse than a dog that had no bath after a year..Now that was "disgusting"

Ofc its annoying and its because there is still lughtining port and apple just dont give a **** about cable transfers anymore. they force you to use latest wifi6 for transfers that should be about 1.2 gbps

The disgusting thing is Apple already showed it can do USB3 transfer speeds over that Lightning to USB-C cable a couple years ago when they introduced it along with the iPad Pro line. They just cheaped out and didn't include the necessary controller chip onboard.

This!
It’s not only about lightning port, it’s the controller chip that being the culprit.
We also get very slow transfer rate on iPad Pros’ USB-C port.

A work around is to use USB-C to LAN port and use gigabit ethernet cable. Way better speed although still not adequate.

Apple seems to encourage everyone to go wireless, hence also no USB printing on iOS / iPadOS.

that WIFI6 speed is theoretical, my experience with WIFI5 in both devices (500MB/s theoretical) is it is much slower either through router or direct Airdrop (iPhone 11 to macbook 2015)

so, enterprises uses ethernet for one reason, wire is always superior, and WIFI6 is a welcome, but iPhone had USB2 for 11 years!!! which is a crime in an era where only USB2 devices are crap cheap peripheral and the iPhone 12 Pro MAX, proud of their makers and magazine's star.

this is an old demand since 2008.
