SimCity Box just says "PC"

I just bought the "Sim City Limited Edition" disk from BestBuy.

I'm hoping to play on my Mac side as my Bootcamp is almost full, and it would be nice to have ONE game on the Mac side...

I know the game has a Mac client - but is that included with this purchase? The box makes no mention of a Mac client. The System requirements list 4 compatible versions of Windows, but no mention of OSX.

Is it the sort of thing where I register it with the Origin store and then I can download the Mac client? Or do I need to return this box and buy it online?

I haven't opened the box yet so I have the option of returning...

If you're referring to the new SimCity, released today, this version is strictly for the PC. The Mac version is still due out this "Spring" according to EA.

Wow.. I thought they said simultaneous release.

It does look like they are going to be after another $60 for the Mac client.

... and just like that, EA drops even further on the list of greedy companies no one really likes...

I think there was some back and forth on the release timing of both versions. But they posted this on Twitter 2 days ago.

It's possible they simply could make the game available on Mac Origin to anyone who has the PC version and vice versa.... Although.... it is EA......

Actually, they generally give the cross-compatible versions. S'how I wound up with Mac versions of the Dragon Age games.

Yeah but they were released at the same time and on the same retail disc as the PC version as PC/Mac

Sim City box is clearly labelled PC - no mention of mac. So they don't have to give the mac version as a courtesy.

Terribly. Intel HD graphics are poor at the best of times, and adding in the Parallels emulation layer is going to cripple it.

Your options are to
a) Use Bootcamp
b) Wait for the 'Spring' Mac release

Thanks. Can I install bootcamp if I also have parallels? Also does boot camp work on mountain lion?

Again thanks and sorry for the newb questions but since you said intel cards are not good would it even be worth it to run bootcamp just to run the new Sim City?

Intel cards wouldn't be good for Parallels, but in Bootcamp and OS X (eventually) you should be fine on low settings.

When I bought FIFA, it was just labeled for Mac. After installing origin I has acess to the PC version. I expect SimCity will be the same way.

At any rate I have a screenshot of an EA rep telling me so, so hopefully I will have recourse if it happens to not be the case.

Thoughts from anyone who's played yet?

I installed on my Surface but Origin thinks I'm on a virtual machine and won't run. The Origin team released a beta client that fixes it, but they decided to stick it on a public Dropbox, which got flooded with traffic and was promptly disabled. EA is dumb

According to the EA website it will appear on Mac in 'Spring', so I am thinking around May? This is the only Mac game I have actually taken in interest in so far and it looks good from all I have read here.

It's lots of fun! I bought it through Amazon thinking it would be with the rest of my digital download library, but it seems EA has put DRM on it through Origin. Anyways, it's lots of fun but it's hard to get used to the data layers after playing SimCity 4 for years. I am also having a hard time seeing traffic information; the only time I see when a road is congested is when I zoom into it or if I have the road upgrade tool selected. The city specializations have been fun to mess with but I'm having a hard time understanding the trading specialization. I also have a gambling city started which is going a bit smoother.

I'm using it through Parallels on a Mac mini (mid 2011) and oh man the lag is terrible. I'm not sure if I should try and lower settings or what...

All I know is I can't play with the lag lol

Anyone know how well it'd run on a MBP 15" Retina?

I tried it out and to be honest I don't know what to say since this is the first time I'm gaming in many many years. When I increased the resolution to the highest it definitely did not work.. There's no way its running on that resolution. However, on a sightly lower one, maybe 16xx*xxxx it did run decently with the graphics shadows and textures set on Medium, with a higher level of High and Ultra. But we'll wait for someone with better knowledge to comment on all of this. I did uninstall it and removed Windows since I didn't realize the game is 12GB large and after installing had 5GB left in the partition and didn't want that little.. So lets see if I install it again, hope someone else can comment..

Thanks...Yeah.. "spring". Not sure if the Mac version will be as good (are they ever?)

Well, it is a native port this time. But it's EA's first attempt at doing one, so I'm not holding my breath...

Anyway, mac users will have the benefit of a much smoother launch. Today was worse than Diablo 3's, couldn't get in the game at all. At least I had a chance to play quite a bit last night.

I'm not sure I would even try on a mac mini let alone on Parallels, thats a double wammy.
