And how does “everything indicate” the bigger iMac will be as you describe? For a very long time the 27 was just a larger version of the 21.5 with some higher specs available. The higher specs are pretty much a given, but the device’s appearance is still an open question.
After reading some of the comments deriding the “consumer class”, I really hope the 27” replacement comes with an even larger chin, and the whole thing is pastel.

It IS an established fact though since it's what the iMac designer said.
The statement of a lone designer still doesn’t fully represent Apple’s intent....

The designer described aspects of the approach.

I prefer black bezels, but white on these look nice on these! Just don’t put white key caps on the MacBook Air.

I think they are clearly being marketed for casual use, but obviously they can do more than that. I think if there is an "M1X" that they put in the MBPs and maybe the 27" iMac, that one will get the "Pro" marketing. But it's just marketing in the end. 🤷‍♂️

I think it’s safe to say the M2 or M1X will eventually get into the 24in. iMac.

Apple‘s approach presently seems to be you can have M1 performance in the form of your choice: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Pro or 24in. iMac. So if the redesigned MacBook Air and Pro get a spec upgrade then it’s pretty much guaranteed the iMac 24 will get it, too.

So for those waiting for 32GB RAM or more just be patient. You’ll get it in the bigger iMac or, if you prefer a more modest sized screen, when the 24 gets upgraded.

I certainly hope that's true. There's no hardware limitation reason why they couldn't put a higher-core CPU and the rumored 32-gore GPU in the 24" iMac form factor, especially considering it has two fans. The only reason they wouldn't is for marketing reasons, and I really hope they don't go that route.

Given that the 'higher-core CPU' doesn't exist yet in a form any of us know about, there is no earthly way to know if there are any 'hardware limitations' to putting it in a 24-inch iMac of this design.

Nor is 'marketing reasons' the only reason they wouldn't do that.

In the first place, since the performance, power use and cooling requirements of next generation chips is not yet known, it is entirely speculative to suggest the current design and enclosures will work. In the second place, even if there is a perfectly viable next model on the drawing board (which is likely, but I hasten to add, not known by anyone with credible knowledge at this point) Apple are not likely to be interested in releasing it as a product while it could cannibalize sales of existing models, and confuse their product development roadmap.

At their fastest, the only time I can recall that they hurried through product development and release was 20 years ago with the G3 iBooks, which had exceptionally poor logic board reliability. Otherwise, a product cycle of 12 months plus is not unreasonable to expect from their more recent past history.

I wouldn’t expect a spec upgrade for the 24in. for another year, although weird things do happen.

I wouldn't even be sure that we'd see an upgraded M-series processor in anything until late this year, or early next. Too much risk of it damaging sales of current models.

Unless it will only be systems with significantly higher cost, such as the Mac Pro. I could see them doing that, but not around similar price-points as we see M1 chips in now.

But I will say that is just my opinion. Unlike some, I don't claim 'knowledge', just an ability to guess.

Well, if they announce an M2/M1X at WWDC for the new MBPs (rumored by Mark Gurman, obviously we don't know for sure), I don't think they would immediately make it available for the 24", a month after the 24" was released.

Also they sometimes announce products at WWDC that aren't available until the fall or even December.

Why are we spinning our wheels on the color? Our attention should be on what the machine can do. If it bothers you that much, then get the silver one. If that doesn't suffice, then wait a few more months (hopefully) for the pro model. If you can't wait, then get a MacMini and call it a day.

On to more pressing matters such as why in the devil 16GB is an upgrade option when it should be base.

It has 2 small fans that need to move all the heat from the SoC and display controller, so there is no way to know how much headroom there is to keep a bigger SoC cool without getting too noisy.

I’m certainly not worried about colour. When I’m ready to order it’ll be a Green one.

But, yeah, at this price point the entry would make more sense if it were 16GB RAM. Then again the performance of the M1 with 8GB appears to be nothing to sneeze at.

I think that there has been a lot of threads about the optimal memory. I think that for casual users 8GB will be enough. Power users will need 16Gb.

Because apparently colors are what matter to the vast majority here. It’s been this way awhile now for phones. Soon we’ll have decoration sub forums. Fashion. Show us your pics.

It’s ok. Just another day in the Mac fashion forums.

I take it you're feeling in the minority here. Not a fan of the fashion?

That is a bit of a shame, but personally I prefer a black car to a red one, or blue. Or pink. Isn't it odd that we all seem to take cars in almost any color for granted, but lord, let's not make a computer that way, it's fashion.

I see it a bit differently. Not because I bought a blue one, and thought about yellow or green instead, but because it's rather nice to have choice. And since they still make a silver one, which is the same color iMacs have been for years, even you have choice that way too. We all win, including the minority.

That’s cool. But don’t care. Specs matter to me. But what is the use talking about it? You like blue? Great. I like green. Did I help you decide? Green looks awesome. Always buy green. In fact green is more popular. You don’t think so? Green means go. You get Pavlovian good feelings seeing green. Why not feel good like that at your computer?

Don’t get red. Red means stop. It’s horrible. May as well stay away from yellow too. That’s even worse. Should I speed up or slow down? Good lord I don’t want to experience that gamut of emotions at a yellow computer.

Then there’s your room to consider. What if I have purple drapes? I wouldn’t want a computer that clashed. I better start a thread and post a pic and get everyone’s ok. Should I go with purple?

You’re right. Choice is good. I’m so glad we can talk about this. I feel better. Now if it only didn’t clash with my watch and phone. Darn it. Now I need a purple phone. But wait you think they’ll do a purple watch? It ALL has to match.

I really wanted a green one, but frankly, it's not bright enough to be a companion piece to my Wrangler.
