So are you using a standard Mini mother board, or is there some change necessary to the board?

Sorry if my question is dumb.

It's a standard Mac Mini motherboard, but if you have the original Core Solo the maximum amount of RAM that you can have is 2GB or it won't boot. If you have a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo equipped Motherboard, you can have two 2GB RAM Chips for a total of 4 GB of RAM of which only 3.1GB will be recognized by the system. Upgrading a Core Solo Motherboard with a Core2Duo chip doesn't help out your situation either. The 2GB limitation is a firmware that has been installed elsewhere on that specific motherboard.

cool nice upgrade! But how did you upgrade to wirelesss-n? Just replace the antenna with the new one?

Sounds like an act of desperation LOL :D !

BTW: those "photos" look very photoshop, do you have any real photos of the aluminium case?

That's not photoshop, he just used the preview design picture from Colorwarepc.com.
He says he will receive the redesigned mac mini soon and will post photos.

Actually you need to replace the chipset and the antenna. I'm going to try and mod the actual internals of the case because I'm not getting anywhere near the n speeds I do on my laptop. If you notice on the inside of the Mac Mini there's a pentagon shaped hole cut out of the metal interior to allow for less signal interference. When I installed the new antenna, it's pretty much sitting right up against that metal housing.

This is not true. The Core Duo Mini logic board can only take 2 gb of RAM, otherwise it will not boot.

I'm sorry, I don't own a Core Duo. I was under the impression it was just Core Solos. My Bad. So I guess the only people that can have 3.1 GB of RAM would be your original Core 2 Duo Mac Mini chipsets.

The most annoying part is that an EFI update to the Calistoga chipset would fix it, but apparently Apple's not interested in making all of our Mac experiences better.

I just bought a used mini for a good price and would like to know which one I have.

If i look under the mini, there is stated "2006" and 1.83 - 80GB. I assume, it should be a 1.83 Core Duo. But when I open the case, the DVD drive says "built 2007" and Mac OS Leopard says under System preferences "Core 2 Duo 1.83".

So do I really have a 1.83 Core 2 Duo???? I just upgraded from 2x 512 to 2x 1GB and I am just amazed from this tiny computer. What would you recommend me to upgrade to make it even faster? I think I should change the 5.400 HDD to a 200GB 7.200. What else?

Withd HD prices this cheap get a 500GB HD instead, the higher data-density will make it faster. Of cause a 7200rpm one is prefered, but I don't know wether there are 500GB/7200rpm just yet.
Go for 2 x 2 GB of memory as well, it will help you from time to time. Plus the maximum amount of graphics memory depends on the total amount of memory installed on the G950.

Oh and you could buy a 2.13 GHz Core2Duo (T7400) or even a T7600 (2.33GHz) - the last ones are pricy though.

amazing job iwth the mini. im thinking about doing something myself. it was previously asked, is there a way to put a display prot onto it. i mean, nothing wrong with dvi, but still.....

Or at least our Mac Mini ones ;)
Any small chance of it happening if/when the fabled refresh turns up? Couldn't see Apple hold out this long on any other of the Macs, apartfrom the ATV...

@deadkenny:
Thank you very much for your sugesstions! Does that really mean, that i HAVE a C2D, if Mac OS X tells me so?
The 2.x Ghz C2D are still way to expensive... 200-300 Euro still. That is indeed a lot for a jump from not less then 1.83Ghz.

yes when macos sais it's a core2duo then you can be 99% sure about this. you can open up the mini and look at the cpu to be 100% sure but I think it's not worth the effort ;)

I just installed Mactracker to indentify my recently used bought mini and it says: Mid 2007.
Does that mean I can install 2x2GB RAM to me able to use 3GB? I tried with 2x1gb sticks and sometimes only have 20mb ram left ... while doing simple office work.

When you check "About this Mac" does it say you have a Core Duo or a Core 2 Duo? If the former, 2 gb and only 2 gb. If the latter, you can install up to 2x2gb for 3.1 gb available RAM.

I think the better test is to open About This Mac, then click More Info. If the Model Identifier comes up as Mac Mini1,1 then you have the older revision which can only handle 2 GB even if updated with a C2D.

Hmm. Damn I am in the office now but will check it his evening.
Doesn´t it slow down everything when I use two different sizes of rams? I tgought because of that dual channel thing ...

Yeaaaah, it states: Macmini 2,1:

Modellname: Mac mini
Modell-Identifizierung: Macmini2,1
Prozessortyp: Intel Core 2 Duo
Prozessorgeschwindigkeit: 1.83 GHz
Anzahl der Prozessoren: 1
Gesamtzahl der Kerne: 2
L2-Cache: 2 MB
Speicher: 2 GB
Busgeschwindigkeit: 667 MHz
Boot-ROM-Version: MM21.009A.B00
SMC Version: 1.19f0

Now I assume I can install 1x2GB and 1x1GB ... OR 2x2GB and will both have 3GB. As the mixture is cheaper and has no disadvantages (i assume...) i will go for that one. Right?

Unfortunately a faster CPU like 2.33 C2D costs 400 Euro or so. That is a lot too much for me.
