Really the only advantage is pcie and TB2.

Apple's PCIe isn't an advantage since it is ludicrously overpriced and unreplaceable (no one makes an upgrade for PCIe SSDs and Apple started using them two years ago). On top of that the SSDs they use now are so slow that they don't even perform any better than a SATA3 drive.

IF :apple: put in a haswell quadcore in the new mini then it would have been faster than the Mac Pro. They would never alowed that :)

Well if that's the case there is no use to get rid of my 2012 but I probably due a Hakintosh Broadwell NUC for my HTPC.

Mostly, people said iris run 4k at 60hz on display port. Its interesting for apple not mentioning this on website. Why hdmi?

Iris 5000 lags on 4K.

Well, at least the thread's title finally came true....

The guy who posted: "The new Mac mini is almost certainly coming" was RIGHT!!!! It DID come!

:eek:

With that said, i'm glad that i bought the 2012 quad-core version a year and a half ago, rather than waiting for the supposed 'upgrade'.

I was very happy, and now i'm very sad about lack of quad core. I'll probably still pick up this new 2014, but I hope this isn't a harbinger of things to come.

I hope this is just a holdover until the 14nm architecture chip Broadwell/Skylake coming out almost certainly next October after it's been in the macbook line coming early next year.

At that time, I'm sure they will have a new fanless form factor.

Really disappointed with this one.

I knew i would not get what i wanted a Dedicated GPU but seing the specs.

No more quad core Cpus bah!!!

I believe that there will be a market for these since the most cheaper one to the most expensive, although i feel the cheaper model will target a lot of users that just need a computer with OSX to browse, emails etc.

Oh well i sold my mini 2-3 months ago. And ill give up on this one.

Really need to know if the new 5K iMac is worth it specially those AMD mobile Gpus that i dont know how good they are (I was expecting a 980m) or nMP or the old Imac.

Oh well. I had my wallet ready on a mini with a GPU (I knew it wasnt happening) or a iMac with 980m. Gonna hang on to my money and see whats going to be the best option for me.

Fare well "The new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming" thread. It was fun though :)

The 2014 Mac mini has much faster graphics than the 2012 Mac mini.

Much faster? Can't say I'm surprised by that comment...

Here's a comparison:

HD 4000
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Intel+HD+4000

HD 5000
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Intel+HD+5000

HD 5100
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Intel+Iris+5100

----------

So after almost two years:
- Quad-Core Dropped;
- No DGPU (expected, even though I wanted one) and not even Iris PRO (HD 5200);
- Not capable of driving 4K decently;
- No SSD standard, not even Fusion standard except for the high end;

No...I will not be getting this overpriced machine...I mean, look at the high end option, it's ridiculous!

For me the new minis are OK. The low end should be a suitable entertainment center computer, now $100 less. I've got two minis doing that service now.

I was hoping for new minis so I could get the 2012 server version at a steeper discount (since I guessed that FW800 was going away -- I didn't expect to lose the quad core and dual drives as well, though!) so I'm now on the lookout in the refurb store.

Anyway, as they say, be careful what you wish for.

The price of the pcie ssd is crazy.

Do they actually think someone is going to pay that much ??

I was looking coward to getting one for the front room for xmas as an htpc , I think I'll just get the basic mid range one and spend as little as possible.

Best Buy was selling the quad core i7 version a couple months back for $650, before applying a 10% coupon. I passed on it, held out for today's announcement I guess. Should've bought it :mad:

Awesome thanks for the info, I'm pretty sure the deal will come back again. Now that they will be getting rid of the old stocks.

I agree. 2 year wait for something they could have done last year. I'm in the market for Broadwell next year. I will keep my 2012 Mini.

I don't think the RAM is soldered is it? Comparing the MBP Buy page when configuring the memory it says:

"MacBook Pro with Retina display comes with 8GB of 1600MHz memory as standard. Please note that the memory is built into the computer, so if you think you may need more memory in the future, it is important to upgrade at the time of purchase."

The Mini BTO memory option doesn't say that at all. Case looks the same so presumably still user upgradable..

Now I wonder if the CPU can be swapped out :confused:

Might be some refurbs, I got one a couple of months back.

well played apple

So... if the ram and HDD are not upgradable anymore then i'm quite happy with my 2012 I bought 6 weeks ago... :)

I have a Quad i7 base $799 + 256GB SSD (mine) $150 + 16gb ram ($200) = 1.25TB Fusion drive (+$30 for ifixit kit) 16Gb i7 for $1180 total

I just spec'd out a new BTO with i7 16gb and 1TB fusion (which is only 128gb SSD) and it came to $1399

I don't need the Iris iGPU as I work with audio, so all in all, I can't complain. :)

That $499 model will be great as a replacement for my parents' 2009 Mini though... all they do is internet and Skype.

So Can someone with a brain functioning at higher capacity than mine is today tell me, how would the New Base/Mid models compare to my "old" Mac Mini Server in terms of performance?

Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011)
* Proc: 2Ghz Core i7 (Quad Core) (I can't remember if this is sandy bridge/ivy/etc...)
* Mem: 8GB 1600MHz DDR3
* Gfx: Intel HD 3000 (512MB)
* 2x 500GB Disk (1x 5400 RMP, 1x 7200 RPM)

Look at MacBook Air performance. I think it is the same processor.

Trying to decide out I'm feeling here. This is the punt they could have released a year ago. The perfect configuration to bridge the time needed for Intel to make it interesting but mere months before they can.

Ok, put on my logistics hat. Apple would have upgraded sooner had they known how long intel was actually going to take. But intel promised and slipped and promised and slipped and promised and slipped. Each time, Apple (think charlie brown with the football) got everything ready to push forward and had to pull back. Each new delay, burning through another 3-4 months.

They've finally had enough and are pushing what they can now.

True but the could have thrown us a bone with Iris Pro unless there were thermal issues.

All these predictions and possibilities in almost 5000 posts and no one saw this dual core coming. Wow!!
