I am still going to need a Mac that will be connected to a thunderbolt display. A Mac Pro is a bit too much. (student life yay)

In 2 or 3 years, Apple will switch to their own CPUs. At this same time, they will be at iOS 11. At this point, in combination with their own SoCs, they will fork iOS 11 to create macOS 11, which will be designed for professionals that use a keyboard and mouse; and OS X will be donezo :( .

I was really really afraid this could happen, but it just might. Everything is moving to become digital. Nobody uses discs or DVD's anymore. More and more people are moving to iOS devices, even if the masses are casual users. And iOS is catering to pro apps. Soon enough, it will be more profitable for Apple and Adobe and other major software developers to ditch OSX versions and just create a full version app for iOS...

Of course it will take time for users of Pro Tools, Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, etc to move over to iOS versions but eventually it might just work...

We just need Apple to make iOS devices with USB ports, damnit!

Could be….. Here's what The Venerable GabrieleR had to say a little while back:

Hi,

i work in an Apple Reseller and like many of you i'm waiting for the mini 2013 refresh.

From monday the two major Apple suppliers in Italy are suddenly and completely out of stock of minis. I know that this happen from time to time, but the timing is no coincidence.

Trust me, a new mini is coming next week, or at least we have solid evidence to believe it.

Just wanted to throw in my anecdotal evidence of an update. In the market for a new mac desktop myself after throwing the towel in on my hackintosh experiment. Been shopping around and checking stock at the Bestbuys in my area. Outside of a couple of entry level minis available, all the BB stores in my area are out of stock. Interestingly, the website shows that the mid tier model will be back in stock next Friday. It is also showing this most of the 21" imac models too.

I wouldn't say nobody. Many smaller cities and even some larger ones don't have the funds to go all digital yet. Server farms just don't happen without someone paying for them. Just yesterday I had to provide a fire alarm drawing on disc to a fire department in a city with a population of 900,000. That city is working on going all digital but it hasn't happened yet.

And close out documents for construction projects are still commonly required to be delivered on disc along with hard copies.

does anyone remember the price of a loaded 2012 quad core? The config below is 1670$ in Canada which is totally insane, I know the $CDN dollar is not at is best but 1700 for a dual core with DDR3 is totally overpriced. So while the money rate is not good I also think it's also overpriced in the US to begin with (1,399.00$USD).

  • 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz)
  • 16GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
  • 256GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
new mini or not, at this price, I'm not even thinking about it. I'm also not implying the other Mac are better deals. A loaded iMac 5k with i7,8gb and the optional GPU is above 4000$CAD (+15% taxes).

I hope my rMBP will live long enough, I'm not motivated to finance their shiny campus anymore.

You're right. As cool as minis are there is a point where paying for the micro-sized technology just doesn't make any more sense. To me that was the point where a well equipped mini costs more than a well-built business or workstation PC.

That said I would be more than pleased to see a quad-core i7 mini with user-serviceable RAM and Iris Pro graphics for $900.00 even if that mean a replaceable HDD.

I love the mini and think it is not given near enough credit for what it is, at least not by most. It is a small, beautiful, well made, fast and silent computer that can do real work. Sure, I wish it had USB C and T3 and user replaceable stuff, but you know, it is quite a marvel of engineering just as it is, as long as it has a PCIe SSD in it. And I do NOT mean Fusion either!

I have the iMac Retina because of the screen, but if they made a separate 4 or 5k monitor and a mini that could run it, I would probably go that way. I had the venerable 2012 i7 before this :) If that had a PCIe SSD in it what a beast it would be!

The user-servicable RAM isn't going to return, unless they switch away from LPDDR3 (well, will be LPDDR4 or 5 then) bars.
I honestly rather expect it to creep up the iMac line - it's already in the entry-level 21" anyway...
