Maybe Apple will throw in a Mac mini update at their next event (new iPad Air & 4" iPhone?), just because "why not".

It does seem like there have been a higher than usual number of Mac mini refurbs hitting apple.com over the last few weeks… not sure if that bears any relation to the issue though?

Specific to this thread, the new Mac mini actually came late 2014. Rumors for 2016/2017 (any guess as to the year?) range from cancellation of the product line to quad core i7s.

You forgot the thing that's worse than cancelling it: Switching to ARM!

"Apple and Intel announce quad core Iris Pro iNUC Mini."

This is a headline I found nowhere, but it is a specific rumor I heard while talking to myself. Pass it on.

I heard that rumor too. Except I heard it from a guy rambling to himself on the bus. Hey! Was that you?

Apparently another guy on a bus was talking about this, so it must be true.

OK… so to flip things around for a moment and say "The new Mac mini is almost certainly not coming" – how do you think Apple would phase it out?

I'm not sure, but I think they would start by getting someone to write a message like this.

I'm not sure where all the wild speculation comes from. They'll use Skylake dual core chips, base machine 4GB of RAM, options for 8 or 16 and some varying SSD sizes and some crappy integrated graphics. Same old.

It's mysterious, but I think it comes from some guy on a bus. At least that's what I hear. And it probably is nonsense, but it's glorious nonsense at least. And also, the new mac mini is almost certainly coming.

:). I just mean that there's always this ridiculous talk of mega-specs for the Mini (i know your post was joking but I've seen posts where folks are yammering about "no quad core and dedicated graphics then I'm not buying it!!"). The mini has always followed the same sort of "rules" for upgrades. You ain't getting much for the $, and that'll continue. It's a basic machine for basic needs.

Of course you are likely to be correct, but as my old junior high school history teacher used to say, the only thing we can count on is change. The "rules" can be changed any time because Apple makes them up as they go. Apple has put a quad core CPU and dGPU in the Mini before, so it isn't crazy to think they might decide to so it again. Or they might drop the mini altogether. I read something about that possibility very recently.;)

To my knowledge they never had a quad core with a dedicated GPU. The server version had a quad core but integrated graphics. I don't see them changing that up. It would cannibalize iMac sales.

That's quite the jump to be waiting for a Mini but then consider a 27 inch iMac. What I can say is that the iMac is a beautiful and speedy machine :). The retina display is amazing. Going forward I refuse to get a Mac without one.

I don't understand how there can be any Apple computers with retina displays. They never had them before they had them, and therefore they couldn't ever have them.

....what? If you are trying to draw a parallel between the possibility of a quad core mac mini with a dGPU and what I said you aren't doing a very good job. The product exists, and is a clear progression in display technology. The mini never had a display, will never have a display, not even in the same train of thought.

The Mini did have a display choice from Apple. The Mini did have a dedicated GPU at one time and some people just don't give a dump about retina displays. Some people own their own displays and would like quad core processors in a Mini work station and don't want an AIO.

You are in the wrong forum according to your bottom line of Apple inventory.

You're him! You're the guy on the bus!

------ All kidding aside ------

If there is a new MM this year (or whenever, if ever) it will be a product engineered to maximize ROI. So quad core processors, user upgradability, and dedicated graphics processors are all probably a thing of the past. Of course, this goes without saying.

I've owned 3 minis. What's with your attitude and claiming I "shouldn't" be posting in a certain forum. That's a bit extreme. Why in the world are you arguing that the Mini had a display choice? It has NEVER, EVER come with a display. Apple HAS displays that will work, but it never came with one. Nor was one ever branded "for Mac Mini". Yes, some Minis did have dGPU options but NEVER for the quad core models. Sheesh, folks.
