Except Apple's customer base isn't becoming smaller. The PC industry is shrinking year after year, and Apple is the only PC maker demonstrating any growth at all. And they are consistently the dominant tablet/PC-replacement maker.

Your doom and gloom predictions are scary, but don't seem to fit with reality.

I'm not trying to argue with you because this is marginally true but based upon sales of one year to the next of each manufacturer so Apple although growing as a percentage does not equate to that many people buying Mac's as compared to the millions of PCs sold.

you have to

What you and Timmy don't get is that of course I don't have. I can keep my 2012 mini until it breaks and then switch to Windows. As long as some company still makes ethernet equipment Apple can't (and won't) make me give it up.

I may have to chose between Apple and ethernet, but I certainly don't have to give up my ethernet if I don't want to. And give the gimped junk coming out of Cupertino these days, it's not really a very hard decision. An iPad can replace my desktop my ass.

yea but 10 years from now every manufacture every tech brand will no longer has ethernet or 3.5jack

Really, every tech brand? How will Apple be able to run their datacenters to keep iCloud running if they can't buy computers with hard wired network connections?

Adaptors will be available for USB-c, d and e!

Here's the smaller sleeker looking box you're looking for, and it's just a software upgrade away from being the new Mac mini. Unfortunately it still has HDMI and ethernet, but that can be fixed in the next version. Then they can also remove the power connector and let it be powered over USB-C from the docking station you'll need anyway to turn it into a computer.

Interestingly I picked up an aTV for my in-laws last week. They have nothing but problems with wifi (not just the aTV, but they can't seem to get good wifi in their home). Since plugging the aTV into an ethernet port, they're always raving about how great it works, how much better the picture is, that their youtube videos don't freeze anymore, etc).

Why do you say unfortunately it still has HDMI? How do you suggest plugging an apple TV into a TV? Yet another adapter?

And an arm processor for the "new" mac mini. I suppose I should consider that a good thing, it means my 2012 quad core i7 will still be the best mac mini for that many more generations.

with special servers, not consumers pc. you think Nasa servers can be bought online or in the stores?

Before I started enjoying OS X on Mac Minis, I was using Linux on PC boxes for my desktop, my compilation boxes, and my servers. Nothing special, just standard X86 boxes running Linux.

BTW, just what kinds of computers do you think NASA uses? ;)

I can pretty much guarantee that in 10 years I'll be able to buy a computer with wired networking for half the price of a mid-range mac desktop. Outside the apple ecosystem, internal local bus ports aren't going anywhere. 10 years is a long time, ethernet may be replaced by something better, but wired networking on consumer hardware is here to stay.

Do you think office desktops are going to be all wireless in 10 years? Or will those be another special class of machine not available to consumers too? Because where I work we're not going to be on wifi in 10 years, just for the security issue alone let alone hundreds of machines in a building trying to share wireless bandwidth.

Apple may not have ethernet on every machine, but they still have ethernet on EVERY machine. A Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter gives any MacBook Air ethernet and most Macs will have 1-2 T-Bolt ports. Added to which you can always get T-Bolt Docks like the CalDigit to run a variety of connections through.

So your saying we should spend another $100+ on a dock for a desktop computer?

I'm saying you can do whatever you like. No one is going to force anything on you. The T-Bolt adapter is overpriced but is $29 I think. Yes the docks are not cheap but offer significant functionality. However that is not an issue now as the current Mini has Ethernet. My only point was that if they took it out you do have solutions.

One of which is to buy a PC. Pretty sure I've never fixed a problem just by whining about it though.

That's Apple's new reputation. The company whose computers are so gimped you need an adapter for everything. Adapters and docks are not acceptable for desktops.

My question is why would someone buy a desktop computer without an ethernet port? Businesses depend on ethernet for putting computers on their network.

Why use up another USB or TB port for ethernet on a desktop? I use all my ports and have another 4 port USB hub. I'm not going to pay Apple $30 for an adapter for a desktop.

I think yor Apple fanning here my friend. ;)

I seriously doubt the Ethernet jack is going to disappear from the desktop machines but it seems that everyone here is convinced it is inevitable. I'm not in favor of that happening. Nor do I think it will. It just doesn't make sense.

I simply pointed out that if it did there would be a solution other than buying a PC if you wanted to maintain the use of OS X.

So don't mistake it for Apple fanning. However it seems quite clear there's a fair amount of Chicken Littleling going on here.

I am just waiting for a Mac Mini 2012 server to pop up near me. Those things are beast.

If Apple is willing to put a 35 Watt chip in there I see 2 quad core Skylakes on that list that they could use.

Edit: They should be willing to do that because the quad core in the 2012 mini is a 45 Watt chip!

http://ark.intel.com/products/64891/Intel-Core-i7-3720QM-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHz

Realizing that the Mini can take a 45 Watt chip makes me more upset about them under powering the 2014 Mini and hopeful they don't do the same in the future.

Nah, apple will mac the 2016 mac mini really thin because that's obviously a good idea. The Mac Mini will never get a quad core as long as the lowest specced Mac Pro has one because a Mac Mini with a quad core Skylake would be faster than the Mac pro lowest spec cpu.

The Mac Mini should really just be a headless Imac without the gpu. Instead it's a headless macbook air.

Let's turn back the clock to the first Mac mini!

Mac mini -- G4 processor, 1.25 or 1.42 GHz, scoring 700 and 782 respectively on Geekbench 2. ATI Radeon 9200 with 32MB RAM.

12" iBook (same vintage) -- G4 processor, 1.2 MHz scoring 601. ATI Radeon 9200 with 32MB RAM. (14" iBook had 1.33 GHz scoring 674).

17" iMac (same vintage) -- G5 processor, 1.6 or 1.8GHz, scoring 848 and 1044. NVIDIA GeForce4 MX or FX 5200 Ultra with 32 or 64 MB RAM.

The mini was intended to have performance more like the iBook (now Macbook Air) than iMac. So nothing has changed. The quad core mini was a fluke probably to support the use of the mini as a server, which wasn't needed in 2005.
