I was going to get a Skull Canyon if there was no Mac mini to my liking released today. But once I started to get used to the idea of going back to Windows I started to long for what Apple is never going to sell to me: An upgradable computer with desktop processor, desktop graphics and more ports than I will ever use. So now I'm watching the keynote on my shiny new PC!

And in case you're wondering, Windows 10 is an ugly flat turd lacking in usability. I.e. a very "modern" operating system. But I think I can learn to live with it.

After a couple of years of following this thread and waiting for the legendary non-existent mac mini i went on and bought a windows custom pc. It has i7 4790 and 8 gb ram with ssd's and hdds as i wish. I was happy with windows until i discovered i could magically transfor it to a mac. I can say its the best thing i have done and i am really happy with it. I just came to see if there is a hope from the mini. Just saying. You won't regret doing it if you can. I wish apple opened os for us to buy and install on a pc easily. It's actually very easy to do.

Going the same way my friend. Building my own this fall. Buying parts that are compatible Hackintosh but I don't know if I'll even go there but if I do I know I can do it.

Windows10/Linux to start.

I didn't even plan it and shop for it. My gfx card was incompatible asus gtx750ti. I just thought why not try? Everything was easy fix and I liked it so much i kept it. It's reliable, fast and play well with other devices. Apples policy made me do it but i am happy.

Do yourself a favor and get the Intel 750 SSD. I love it!

When I do a full shutdown of Windows it tries to play a 2 second sound when it displays the "shutting down" screen. But it fails, since the computer is off before it's halfway through the sound file. :)

This is where I'm at right now:

The 2 250GB SSD are for OSs. I may add a 3rd for the Hackintosh. I have an NSA for all data files. I will be adding a Nvidia GPU but haven't made my mind up on which one and I also wand to see what the new 1070 noise levels are. I believe they were supposed to be around 30DB or less which will be the noisiest part of the system.

I have the same case. It's a pure pleasure to build in it.

Unfortunately not. I did consider the I7 but I going with the I5 because it will overclock to 4.4 Ghz and I really don't need the hyperthreading of the I7 but who knows I may change my mind between now and fall. Allso I wanted to keep the system under 1K with the graphics card and I think I'll save a couple hundred off my parts during black friday sales. There are 2 M.2 slots on the motherboard but then again I weighing price vs speed and the 2.5 SSD are fast enough for my uses.

I can't wait till fall and now I'm REALLY not shelling out cash for the ****, outdated, sub-par, overly expensive hardware that arrogant Apple sells. I'm going with a Hackintosh only because I need OSX to build games for the iPad.

Is it feasible for someone to start a business building and selling Mini-like boxes that guarantee compatibility with OSX, while also offering upgrades/fixes to keep the boxes running when OSX updates breaks things (e.g. we build and guarantee the boxes...you just install the OSX)?

When you're not gaming, it's possible to have a completely silent machine, but you have to make sure you get the right graphics card. An MSI for instance with a 0db mode. You already chose a good PSU, and your heat sink is a great bang-for-the-buck, but I might go really high end on my cooler because that excellent case you picked has the clearance I think. I have this one:

but next time I'm going for its big brother:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018

The 15S might be a few millimeters too big. After that, you need the program SpeedFan so that you can set silent fan profiles. Watch this quick start tutorial here:

There. Done. Have your silent, powerful cake and eat it too. When doing plenty of daily tasks, my temps sit easily below 40 degrees celsius (very conservative) with no fans running.

no.. it was tried before and they were shutdown. MacOS can only be licensed on Mac hardware. You can't buy a license and aren't allowed to run it on non-Apple hardware.

Yep and I have been looking at that cooler while trying to convince myself to spend the $40 more for it. The Corsair is 36DB at full speed plus has a sleeve bearing. I will give in by the time I order it.

The 15S will fit in my case according to the Silent PC web site.

I'm waiting on the Nvidia 1070 benches to see which is the quietest to complete my list. I've been watching the MSI and the 0db is on my radar.

Thanks for the SpeedFan tip.

You'll love it. Since you're in the Samsungs, have a look at the 950 128 GB NVmE as an option.
