Intel sure are coming out with some eccentric options. Here's another CPU that's not coming to a Mac Mini in October:

Intel Xeon E3-1565L V5 - 2.5GHz quad core with Iris Pro P580 graphics and 35w TDP. Yes, that's well within the heat profile of the current Mini case!

There's a 45w version that runs 3GHz and a 65w version that runs 3.5GHz, I think they are all desktop CPUs though.

Optimised for video delivery, wonder if Final Cut Pro X (or iMovie!) users would be interested...

Interesting the rumours about the forthcoming 5,120×2,880 5K standalone display. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the current Mini couldn't drive such a beast and it would seem silly that Apple would continue selling a standalone computer you couldn't even connect to it, so call me mad, call me insane but I'd say that the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming.

OK, here's a possible correction. The 5K display like the current Thunderbolt display is intended as a "dock" for portable Macs because it has ports needed for docking the computer. The Mac mini has always been aimed at current PC owners that want to move to or try out a Mac at minimum cost by using their existing display (1080P at most), keyboard, and mouse.

Mad! Insane! I like it.

Yes, but Apple really really likes to sell screens, and they aren't going to be selling 1080p. But they might redesign the current 2k monitor and add a 4 and/or 5k unit to the monitor lineup.

When it first came along, folks interested in moving from Windows to Mac were certainly targeted with the Mini. It has gone on to generate interest among a much wider user base….. and derision from those who feel it should be more than what it is.. Expect more of the same with the new Mac Mini, that is almost certainly coming.

Oh, I don't think it's derision from those who feel it should be more than it is, so much as derision from people who want a product that Apple simply does not provide -- a powerful, expandable desktop computer. That's what you have to give up when you leave the PC world...

Monitors (on desktops) often out live the computer. A 5k monitor with a GPU?

Give me one with a Mini and let me swap out the Mini in 3-4 years, and I will be in line at my local Apple Store!

Has the mini been discontinued yet?
It wouldn't surprise me if apple don't upgrade it and actually simplified the range even further before killing it off.

According to 9to5Mac :

http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/31/kaby-lake-samsung-new-ssds/

No?

At least not with a single cable.

And another take on 5K display:

http://www.imore.com/driving-5k-apple-display

All that cable faff for a 5k display at niche prices sounds un-Apple, whose solution was to sell the 5k iMac in the one package with custom circuitry to run the screen hidden from view.

All this potentially goes away when Cannonlake arrives in late 2017 if it can support 8k displays alongside Displayport 1.4 bundled into Thunderbolt 4.

What if Apple for now just go with a 24" Retina 4k DCI-P3 4096x2304 60Hz Display using a single USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 cable which can plug directly into a new generation of MacBooks? It can come with the usual refinements of Ethernet (perhaps even 10-Gig rather than Gigabit ethernet to get the professionals looking), 4 USB 3.0, FaceTime HD, and an extra USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 downstream port to daisy chain. Price it reasonably and go for volume sales rather than the inevitable niche that a 5k display might be with the balkanised cable situation.

If a display has to come with a built-in GPU it could initially threaten the iMacs but will eventually (4-5 years down the line of no updates, typical Apple modus operandi) become a laughing stock if Apple didn't refresh it every 1-2 years with the latest GPU and support it.

Imagine if Apple's TB display had come with a built in Mobile AMD 5770 GPU? Amazing tech to start with. Not so much in this day and age, and potentially restricting too if drivers aren't being developed for it any more.

And to stay on-topic with Mac Mini, yes, I'd rather a resigned Mini come with an AMD Polaris on board using a new case design (even if we have to borrow the Mac Pro trashcan style) than be forced into buying the Apple Thunderbolt 3 display just to have decent graphics performance. Isn't that why most of us got a Mini?

Folks have been predicting the demise of the Mac Mini for years. This is from Jan 2009:

LMAO!!! mac Mini folks will never give up hope. its become pretty obvious that the mini is no more. move on people:D

Rest assured, the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming.

Are you sure? Three months ago my 5 year old 2.5ghz Mac mini's video card failed. I gave up on getting refurbished one form Mac when the one they sent was faulty so I returned it and got a refund with the intention of spending that money on a new upgraded model that is surely coming out this year. I am starting to get a little impatient.

Not to add any fire to the rumours but interestingly over the last three weeks the number alerts for available refurbished Mac minis have increased dramatically. For about three months I only got about 1 alert a week with maybe one or 2 Mac minis but in the last three weeks I am getting 1 or 2 a day.

Getting even more here in Japan.

The UK refurb store has shown the base model Mini very often in recent weeks, along with some top end custom configurations. The 2012 models haven't been seen in months and I doubt they'll return now. I remain stunned that it's possible to spec up a (dual core) Mac Mini to £1759 brand new having seen some of the refurbished models on offer recently. That's not that far behind the entry-level Mac Pro in terms of price point although over a third of the price of that top spec Mini is the 1Tb of flash.

With any luck new Mac models will take into account the relative collapse in flash prices in recent months.

How can you return it. Is there some kind of policy?
