Anyway, ever since the beginning of MR Time, people have been complaining that their favorite Mac computer isn't getting updated and the Mac is not keeping up with PCs and they're threatening to go over to Windows.
Wow, now you're making
me feel old. I started out as an enormous fan of Apple computers, as my first computer was made by them -- that is, an Apple ][+. I stuck around in the Apple ][ world for years, but when Apple moved to the Mac, I moved away from Apple. The closed box, the closed OS, the programmer-unfriendly environment; it just wasn't my thing. I switched over to using dual-boot Windows / Linux machines.
Enter OS X. With the return of Jobs, Apple manages to combine their user-friendly UI with coder-friendly BSD Unix. OS Nirvana has arrived on earth! Apple's hardware was still, well, awkward at best, but the new Mini provided a fairly inexpensive way to dip your toes into all that OS X goodness. I picked up a PowerPC Mini, and returned to the Apple fold after more than a decade.
Next, enter the Intel migration. When Intel brought out the Core line of processors, they basically left everybody else in the dust. Those CPUs were so much faster, ran so much cooler, and provided so much more power per $ than anything else any competitor had, they pretty much crushed everybody else. And Apple's convenient decision to switch to Intel right at that point in time pushed their machines up to near-parity with Windows PCs in terms of power (which was, honestly, amazing for anyone who'd been following Apple's history). I picked up an Intel Mini, and started evangelizing to my family and friends about the new Mac world.
But yeah, I'm once again losing interest. While Apple does maintain the UI of OS X, their recent moves have been less than friendly to coders (they seem to be moving to migrate OS X to the iOS model, walled-garden ecosystem and all), while their hardware is once again stagnating. There seems little reason for a guy like me to use Apple computers any more.
tl;dr: Sure, people have complained about Apple hardware forever. But there have been times when Apple was better, and times when it has been worse. We're definitely seeing a dip into the worse days for Apple right now.
