I'm actually using a mid tower case:

Fractal Design Define R5 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case

The reason is to keep the system whisper quiet with better airflow and sound dampening interior. It will also accommodate full size GPU cards. If I want to put an ATX board in a few years I can use the same case.

It needs to be deep enough for this heatsink:
Noctua NH-D15S 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler

Extremely efficient and quiet with 25db fan that matches case fan db levels.

And to top it off This build without GPU card will cost under 1K....less that the top end stock Mini.

I will be adding either AMD RX480 or Nvidia 1060 later in the year when prices stabilize.

The ultimate goal is triple Boot Hack/Windows 10/Linux machine using these instructions for the hack side:

This thread actually predates the 2014 Mini update, and went on just fine after that. (Although I suppose with the 2014 being such a let-down, many folks just punted and started waiting for the next update...)

I started to follow this thread back in 2013 and after the 2014 downgrade i bought a pc after 8 years of mac. In no time i hacked it and forgot about this thread. Tapatalk reminded me recently there are people still waiting and i was surprised. I already upgraded my hackintosh with more ssds and ram. But the prophecy of the title of this thread seems forever open ended.

This thread is about so so so much more than just the mini. Fascinating. People. Technology. Computers. Business.

As an "old timer" around here, I've visited Mac Rumors on and off since before 2002. Never used to post anything.

Anyway, ever since the beginning of MR Time, people have been complaining that their favorite Mac computer isn't getting updated and the Mac is not keeping up with PCs and they're threatening to go over to Windows. There has got to be at least 1 million posts over the years stating this. Over and over and over again.

I like to rag on Apple's neglect of giving me what I want just as much as the next guy...But for those of you who truly feel frustrated, get over it. This is how it is. You never really get what you want from appl. Either it's purposely crippled and underpowered (and still pricey) or breathtakingly expensive (and maybe still underpowered compared to the current PC offerings).

That's the price we pay to play with a Mac.

Wow, now you're making me feel old. I started out as an enormous fan of Apple computers, as my first computer was made by them -- that is, an Apple ][+. I stuck around in the Apple ][ world for years, but when Apple moved to the Mac, I moved away from Apple. The closed box, the closed OS, the programmer-unfriendly environment; it just wasn't my thing. I switched over to using dual-boot Windows / Linux machines.

Enter OS X. With the return of Jobs, Apple manages to combine their user-friendly UI with coder-friendly BSD Unix. OS Nirvana has arrived on earth! Apple's hardware was still, well, awkward at best, but the new Mini provided a fairly inexpensive way to dip your toes into all that OS X goodness. I picked up a PowerPC Mini, and returned to the Apple fold after more than a decade.

Next, enter the Intel migration. When Intel brought out the Core line of processors, they basically left everybody else in the dust. Those CPUs were so much faster, ran so much cooler, and provided so much more power per $ than anything else any competitor had, they pretty much crushed everybody else. And Apple's convenient decision to switch to Intel right at that point in time pushed their machines up to near-parity with Windows PCs in terms of power (which was, honestly, amazing for anyone who'd been following Apple's history). I picked up an Intel Mini, and started evangelizing to my family and friends about the new Mac world.

But yeah, I'm once again losing interest. While Apple does maintain the UI of OS X, their recent moves have been less than friendly to coders (they seem to be moving to migrate OS X to the iOS model, walled-garden ecosystem and all), while their hardware is once again stagnating. There seems little reason for a guy like me to use Apple computers any more.

tl;dr: Sure, people have complained about Apple hardware forever. But there have been times when Apple was better, and times when it has been worse. We're definitely seeing a dip into the worse days for Apple right now.

Agree - the hardware is stagnating and quite expensive for what you get. Now that Microsoft has released a solid OS in Windows 10, it's really making me think hard about what I am going to replace my 2010 iMac with. While I prefer OS X still, I do use Windows 10 at work and I could easily live with it at home - something I wouldn't have considered a few years ago.

Yep that's where the smart thinkers are going. I use W10 both on my iMac as a VM and on our Laptop. I would have no issue with moving back to Windows full time. The ball is in Apple's court to come up with something to keep my attention when upgrade time comes - if not then I'm off.

I think the Emperor Nero started this thread some time ago now.

So is anyone brave/stupid enough to predict when/if Apple will finally announce some new hardware for 2016 in particular the Mini?

It's Tuesday the 19th July tomorrow and there has been posts for umpteen weeks now from optimistic Apple owners stating this or that Tuesday will be the day new Mini's will be announced. ;)

Probably October 2016 at the earliest. The last 2 minis were released in October (2012 & 2014), so October 2016 is as good a guess as any. Kaby Lake processors should probably be available around that time (hopefully).

I was SO tempted to take the plunge on a Mac Mini this weekend, but I'm going to hold off until October to see if a new one is released.

If there isn't a new Mac Mini by January 2017, then it will almost certainly be shelved forever.

Well if it's gonna show in 2016 then I reckon it'll be here within the next 4000 hours.

Stupid question really, that's been answered many times.

Could be Tuesday, but could be any other day. Could be this year, but could be next. Some new hardware, including the new Mac Mini, is almost certainly coming…… eternally.

im waiting just as everyone else is. I'm sick of my 2009 imac getting to be very laggy

My early 2009 Mac Mini (running Mountain Lion) isn't. I can wait…. a couple or three years; maybe another generation or two of OS X and Mac Mini before then.

I'm predicting dropping the Mini, Macbook Air and Mac Pro altogether. Or more accurately letting them languish without any updates for the next five years like the Thunderbolt Display.

You keep repeating the mantra of the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming but I have yet to see you produce any evidence to support your continued assertion.

The evidence suggests it'll be this October.

Installing El Cap will quickly change your "can wait" to "can't wait" status ;-)
