Uh, the M1 Macs so far have an audio output port in the form of a 3.5 mm headphone jack. As for an audio input port Macs stopped having those years ago - I had to use a USB mic with my 2013 iMac.
Macs have used combo in/out ports just like how ControlTalk standard iPhone headphones work (4 metal connections/3 black separators on the 3.5mm Jack) for the same amount of years you speak of. You need an updated plug.

My situ - motion graphics/animator with 2013 maxed out trashcan 12 core Mac Pro. It's showing its age for many everyday tasks.

Am just 'desperate' to get a new machine with fast M1X or better CPU. Why? I need cores, I need snappy. As many as possible. The vague rumours about a smaller new Mac Pro are tempting to hold on for but who knows what will come of that. Happy to grab a pimped up M1X mini to tide me over for the next year or two but ONLY if I can get 64GB ram upwards in it.

That's my main fear - new 'high end' mini comes out with a 32gb/64gb limit. Ideal world I need 128GB - After Effects which is my daily driver EATS ram like you wouldn't believe. More more more please. 64GB I could take (it's what I currently have) but I'm screaming for more to use. Holding out hope but fear it's unrealistic.

can Adobe After affects work and cycles be offloaded, securely, to a Mac server farm to gain the ram resources and cpu cycles you need for the interim at least?

Thats funny, because on my 2018 Mini, I sure dont see any audio input other then ones in my MOTU interface listed in Logic Pro, Ableton Live or Steinberg Wavelab (or any other audio app I use). The Mac mini hasn't had an audio input for almost 10 years now.

I'd still like to see a decent specc'ed Macmini pro.
64gb, ethernet - don't put it on the powercord - that's simply dumb AND stupid. !!
4TB
It needs at least 1 USB A for dongles
2 x 5k screen graphics.
audio in and out - combi socket.
And preferably with a built in handel.
Make it sexy & with black bits - something to show I care about design.
And ship it with a corded AND bluetooth illuminated keyboard w numeric keypad. Like the Logitec, but thinner.

That's analogue audio out only.
If you read my early post I specifically stated the type of connection. It’s the exact same as the iPhones and the MBP since 2012.

first you denied any headset port entirely. Then when I show you the specs you’re stated it’s out only. Sorry but you’re incorrect. I used an adaptor for my 1/4” guitar plug to 3.5mm into my former 2016 & 2020 MBP and each detected in GarageBand.

I find it very strange Apple would only have an audio out port on any of their machines yet cater heavily to music pros as well as graphic pros.

test: get a 3.5mm headphone cable with CONTROLTalk that used to ship with iPhone 6s or older and plug into your Mac mini. Bring up GarageBand or your audio software of your choice. Hit record and talk into the mic. Watch the levels and set to use built-in audio.

I wish Apple would go back to the 3.5mm jack that did analog 1/8" & optical Toslink; as it sits now I will have to get a USB-C to optical Toslink dongle for my 2.1 Logitech setup...

Actually it is hard to tell given Record through your MacBook's headphone jack. However the Mac mini is not on the list in that article.
Not really hard. Just look in System Preferences under Audio Input. Nothing to see there.

You may want to read yourself carefully. I never denied the headset port. You’re referring to another poster.
Also, I actually own a 2018 Mini and assure you there is no combo port — just analogue audio out.

Apple shop has gone down here in Belgium.

I just borrowed my M1 mini at work to a co-worker and went back to my laptop. What I miss most is the convenience of just walking up to my desk and having a fixed setup there. No hassle, just press a button and work. Even with a Thunderbolt hub/dock, it's always some installation work to get the setup back up and running. But then I also need a walkabout machine for meetings. So perhaps I should get an mini pro kitted out for home (audio production) and the cheapest M1 MBA for walkaround. That could be around the same price as a kitted out 16", and less heavy to lug around. What do you guys think?

Sweet, another reason to list out my Mac mini wishes...! ;^p

I say go for a Max mini Max:

10-core CPU (8P/2E)
32-core GPU
64GB RAM
1TB SSD
10Gb Ethernet
$2999

BUT...! For a walkaround device, maybe think of the 12.9" iPad Pro (with the M1 inside); looking good client-side, added benefit of using the iPad Pro in Sidecar mode while at the Mac mini (Max) audio workstation...?

Nice setup! I only need 32GB and don't care for the GPU. How do you get to that price? Has anything price-wise been leaked? I'm assuming price of the mini + €500, more or less.

As for the iPad... I already have an 11" Pro and it's brilliant. But I can't use it for Teams calls and the like, because I use it to take notes in GoodNotes o_O:rolleyes: It's a possibility I investigated. Split screen notes and Teams works, more or less, though the video gets shut down. Also, I didn't like the idea of my conversation partners staring up into my nostrils...

Just speculative pricing, keeping in mind Apple charges about $200 for every 8GB of RAM, the same for every 512GB of SSD, and $100 for 10Gb Ethernet...

So if an iPad is a no go, but you need 32GB of RAM, then the 14" MacBook Pro may be your best choice (the M1 MacBook Air supports a maximum of 16GB RAM)...

The mini pro would get the 32GB/1TB SSD. Because the M1 mini at 16/1TB is €1490, I add €500 for the "mini pro" upgrade, then €430 to get to 32GB RAM, totalling €2420.

The MBA would be the cheapest (8/256) because I'll use it almost only for Teams calls and some short, occasional work. That's available now for €980. Add the mini and it's €3400 total.

If I would fold it all into one machine (no mini, only a laptop), in a 16" version it would be exactly the same €3400. But I'd have the inconvenience of having to drag that everywhere. I have a 16" now and I'm not liking it...

Ok, I’ll bite: Why is it a dumb idea, to get one more cable (Ethernet) out of sight by shifting the connector to the PSU? And why is it at the same time okay to combine the two audio connectors into one port?

As for the PSU - it's just stupid. Power = power. Computer = connectivity. If you're going to split it out, might as well add a TB dock to the package. I have no opinion on the audio connector so I won't comment on that.

No, and don't have high hopes for it. At least not in the foreseable future.
I think if Apple don't launch eGPU support today to complement their mobile lineup then they won't. I'm happy to eat my words and want to be wrong. But they've had a long time to get it going.

Not expecting any mini hardware today, but hoping for it. As long as the GPU can run wow classic I'll sell my eGPU to pay for a new mini, seems obvious they are just abandoning eGPUs going forward in favor of their chips.

Maybe they will have different versions? A more budget base, and then the purported high end.

Making the Mini a high end only machine doesn't add up. But wtf.

10c CPU, 64GB, 32c GPU at 3000€ could make me buy it.
Just please make the colors right too, at least as an option.
