Less clutter with cables, better esthetics, and a gorgeous screen. You wouldn't get that screen quality for 1k$ and having an all-in-one device is tempting.
My monitors are now on their 5th and 3rd computer, respectively, so I prefer to keep computer and display separated and thus would always go for a mini over an iMac. Even more so, as iMac (display) ergonomics still has room for improvement.

If the iMac Pro would be $1000 more expensive than their mac mini counterpart, it actually makes a lot of sense to go with the iMac. Less clutter with cables, better esthetics, and a gorgeous screen. You wouldn't get that screen quality for 1k$ and having an all-in-one device is tempting. The only downside is no upgrade possibility, yet having m1max and 64GB of RAM should serve you well for the next 7 years.

I am happy with my 32" monitors though. I couldn't go back down to smaller sizes. Plus I like being able to have identical monitors. So for me, the mini is the way to go... I am just going to keep using my m1 air until the m3 mini comes out. By then it should have more monitor support, ddr5 ram, armv9, and 3nm. But dang is the wait killing me

I'm going to wait on the iMac until it is foldable.

I’ve read countless comments on countless threads/forums where iMac users have said “I’m done with all in one computers” (iMac).
While the iMac does have its place, plenty of users do not like having an all-in-one computer after owning an iMac.
Personally I’ve despised them since the first Bondi Blue 15” CRT iMac was unveiled for the very first time.

I'm undecided if my next Mac will be a mini or iMac, or possibly even a MBP. I have an iMac now, but the ergonomics are terrible. It is too high for me. I also have an iMac G4 for fun. It is beautiful and ergonomic, so it can be done.

One of the reasons I have not already upgraded my iMac is the cost because I am also replacing the screen. I have a lovely 27" 4K monitor as a second screen. If I get a mini, I will probably add one of the Huawei 3:2 ratio monitors, unless someone brings out a monitor using the higher resolution 3:2 panel from the Microsoft Surface Studio.

I have two LG 27" Ultrafine 5K monitors that I want to use with the next Mini. An M1 Pro should work well.

I expect a macOS device-free event personally.
I think you might be right. Maybe we’ll get a late April event too, although I’d be happy with a press release in the current chassis. The stuff listed makes it seem very light weight for an event though.

March, April and June would seem quite a lot of events, but being virtual maybe that’s the direction for now; shorter and more focussed.

The M1 Pro Mac mini would occupy a different price tier. It is unlikely they would drop the price of the M1 Mac mini, as they would both be available for sale at the same time in different price categories.

so I should buy Mac mini m1 now no need to wait for march event ?
I’m waiting regardless, because I’m 100% convinced it will get a new form factor. I think the M1 is the last of its design generation, and believe both the higher tier M1 Pro/Max Mac mini (spring?) and the lower tier M2 Mac mini (fall?) will have a brand new design.

I got the iMac G3, and later an iMac G5, but around 2012 I decided that the mini made more sense. I'm using the same 4K monitor for my Mac mini and a gaming tower.

The Mini would be so much more attractive to me if they'd once again build them to allow you to upgrade the RAM and SSD (nvme at this point) -- or at least just the storage if not the RAM also

Storage is easy since you can just use external storage on a desktop. In fact, that is what I do for my 2017 27" iMac. I have a 1 TB internal SSD, and a 2 TB external USB-C SSD, a bus powered Samsung T7. Works great. If you want native SSD speeds, you can go with Thunderbolt, but for most people that's overkill.

For Time Machine, I also have connected an external 2.5" hard drive, an older bus powered Toshiba model.

Given the move to ”system on a chip” that came with the M1 chip, the days of upgradable RAM and on-board storage will soon be gone across the whole Mac line-up.

The new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming…… Post purchase RAM and on-board SSD upgrades are almost certainly not returning.

Please understand that that is a choice by Apple and having a slotted NVME, even if just for additional storage, would not be a cause for slowdowns or problems.

They are choosing this limitation which is my frustration

100% convinced? Wow. Based on what?

I can’t think of any reasons why Apple would go to the trouble of redesigning the mini.

Based on all the leaks, and based on the fact they've already redesigned the iMac and the MacBook Pros. Apple is making a clean break with Intel, and one of the ways they are doing this is creating a new design aesthetic for each of their Mac products.

Anyone with the old design will be stuck in the past. This is not just about looks though. It's also about future accessories. If Apple upgrades the Mac mini form factor, and like I said I am completely sure they will, that means many new accessories will no longer be fully compatible with the older models.
