Glad that I bought a 2012 i7 quad-core Mini as well. GREAT little Mac. Upon my recommendation, a friend bought one too. We're both happy with 'em.

It's run flawlessly for going on 4 years now. I'm wondering if I could get at least 7-8 years out of it.

The 2012 Mini was an excellent blend of power vis-a-vis value. Upgradeable RAM and drive (I just added an -external- SSD via USB3).

I'll bet that -- from Apple's perspective -- that became exactly what was WRONG WITH IT. An excellent Mac "out-of-the-box", user-upgradeable… it scraped against their "planned obsolescence" mindset.

If Apple offered a new Mini with corresponding updates that again balanced a decent price with good value, I might not -wait- for 7 or 8 years to go by. I might just take a plunge and "buy short". But I'm NOT going to do that unless they offer me something WORTH paying for, even though I can "afford" to buy the most expensive Mac Pro (and I can).

The arguments over the just-released 2016 MacBook Pro's are a-ragin'.
Do -you- accept Phil Schiller's comment, "we don't design for price, we design for the experience" at face value? I regard it as flippant and glib. Pay our price, regardless.

I don't mind "paying the price", but I ain't givin' 'em my money unless they give me something "of value" in return.

That goes for the MacBook line (I'll pick up a 2015 refurb or closeout).
And the same will go for the Mini -- IF they decide to offer another one.

There may be an update in the pipeline but on hold until Apple can get 'enough' mobile Kaby lake chips it wants from Intel which may not happen until 2017. There is speculation we may see a November announcement but I doubt it.

I'm saying this as the new Macbook Pros just announced only have Sky lake where Dell, Asus and HP have Kaby lake in their laptops. Apple cannot be happy with this at all because not having new desktop hardware before the holiday season isn't good for sales. This is why I think Apple is pursuing a switch to ARM for their entire line Mac line up in the future.

ARM has seen a 90% increase in performance in the past 4 years where Intel has only be able to produce 10-20% increase in performance in that time with their i-Series chips.

As for the Mac Mini, I believe the design will be roughly the same but 'nearly' half as a thick and praised for this engineering achievement. It will likely have built in SSDs with no HDD option, no user upgradable memory at all. As for ports it will be just have 4 or 6 USB-C with a headphone jack as they kept it with the new Macbook Pro.

it needs an e-net port and power plug.

I don't have a problem with the statement itself, I think it's true. For me the question is whether "the experience" justifies the price. If not, I won't buy it. The function strip wouldn't enhance my "experience" and it doesn't interest me. I feel the same when it comes to the iMac, I don't want a 4k monitor, and upgrading it to a 5k monitor makes me want it even less. Just increases the price, requires more system resources to drive and forces me to pay for something I don't want.

Apple doesn't hate the Mac, they just don't understand why you'd want a Mac when there's the iPad Pro.

You will come around to Apple's way of thinking...every Apple fan ultimately does. :p

"I love it when a plan comes together" :D

The fact that they are dead sucks bad enough. But Apple's refusal to man up and tell the truth is just sad. We kept them going and they left us hanging. Thanks.

That's the maddening part - apparently there was no Q&A at all, or Apple would not answer anything that wasn't related to MacBook Pro? Really, it's like an ex-girlfriend that you still love, and you think you might get back together, and she keeps you hanging, but is actually pregnant with someone else (e.g. it's over!). Ha. Feels like that with Apple.

As much as I'd like to see this thread keep going like that other thread with 8000 replies, anybody sincere in their expression here should probably just log out and move on - if the mini was the only thing they wanted.

If I weren't in SE Asia I would for this somewhat ugly thing: https://system76.com/desktops/meerkat

Honestly, that's probably what I'll be moving towards as well. I'm not interested in running win10. Ubuntu and one of these little guy is probably what I will be end up getting next...

I think this is a hint from Apple about the future of the Mini (and the Pro). It took some thought on their part to intentionally leave them out of the family picture. This their way of saying “If you want one, buy it now before it’s eliminated”. And they do not even have the latest usb and thunderbolt ports!

She is trying to make you jealous. Don't let her know it bothers you, or she will only tease more.

Perhaps a better question is:
Even if Apple does release a new Mini, do you really want anything to do with this company nowadays?

For me, I really like MacOS. I could go back to Windows but I really don't want to. I'm going to give Apple the benefit of the doubt and assume for the moment that Intel is to blame. I know Intel is not able to ship at this moment any quad core variants of Kaby Lake and maybe, just maybe Apple wants to use those in the Mac Mini. Just have to wait a little longer and see. :(

You can stay with OSX.
Hackintosh Mini.
300% faster, 50% cheaper.
Stay tuned.

Apple is indicating that they aren't after any new interest in the mini and pro product lines. Only people who already know about them would even think to buy one.

People have been saying Apple was just waiting for Kaby Lake chips in January, but why didn't they put in the latest chips when they came out? Just wishful thinking.

Exactly. And why would apple prefer users on the iPad pro instead of the Mac? I think the answer is simple, application control. Nobody has ever had to jailbreak a Mac to get unblessed apps on a Mac whereas platform lockdown is at the core of the iOS products. When Apple removes the Macs from their ecosystem and are iOS 100%, they will control 100% of the apps that are deployed, as well as the method of deployment.

Just bought an Amazon echo ($180) to tell us the weather and play music. Memo to Apple: why do not you have some similar product that we can just plug into our Mac mini or connect to our airport wifi? Oh, and did I say the echo also links up to ooma so we can make telephone calls just like talking to someone in the room? No need for an iPhone and a iEarplug or whatever (not yet released).
