In any case, I've never taken a liking to Apple's standalone monitors in the past.

I am still using my 23" Apple Cinema Display HD (1920x1200) on my quad Mini with a DVI to HDMI adapter. It was purchased new from an Apple Store in July of 2015 and still looks remarkably good. It was really expensive back then and I was hesitant, but it turned out to be a very good investment.

I wanted a Thunderbolt display and am sure I would have been happy with it, but just couldn't bring myself to pay that much. Was looking at a refurb, waited too long and then they were all gone. Worked out fine though, as I now have another setup that works perfectly for me.

The new ones from LG (or whoever) don't interest me.

[edit]Was just looking at this old post again and noticed it has a major typo. I got the Apple Cinema Display in July 2005, not 2015! It is 12 years old and still looks great. :)

The fact that they are dead sucks bad enough. But Apple's refusal to man up and tell the truth is just sad. We kept them going and they left us hanging. Thanks.

Most accurate thread so far. The other is driven by pure sarcasm.
Yes, their silence is the hardest part.
It's tough to let go.
Hey developers, just go with mobile friendly web apps rather than the Apple app store, screw X-Code and eliminate the need for the hardware.

Sums it up.

Big fat thanks, Apple. After decades of paying your premium price, giving you fat profits, and putting up with the endless ribbing from Windronze and Linux heads for it, now you look like dropping a pile of big fat steaming ones all over us.

Not too late, but getting damn close. 2017 looks like being the make or break year for you and me (and a lot of others too).

Be sure of one thing, dear Apple, if I switch to a Linux box, I won't be coming back, ever. Might still use OS X, but you can stick your increasingly crippled and overpriced desktop hardware where the sun has not shone for a very long time.

I hope I saved some people some time! You're welcome.

Personally, I think they are either going to drop the Mini and the Pro completely in favour of more powerful/upgradeable iMacs or drop the Mini and keep the Pro with a more budget option in place of the Mini to try and appease us.

I am never right but you never know :)

Got tired of the mac rumor schmucks with the "The new Mac mini is almost certainly coming" thing.

Please post here because the title of this thread is more accurate.

Hate to see what the mac pro thread is trending. Those guys get really upset.

The demise of the Mac Mini been predicted for almost a decade now……. Mid 2007:

no, mac minis are being discontinued, havn't u heard?

Netcraft confirms that Mac Mini is dead!

Then in 2008…

My two cents are that if we don't get an upgrade on the 9th, then I wouldn't be surprised if we had to wait until August (if the mini isn't discontinued by then). Sorry to be so pessimistic, but Apple has really treated this wonderful little machine and all its users quite badly

A fairly big thread back then:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-mini-to-be-discontinued.586243/

………. But it is still here, albeit being updated less frequently than in the past, as is the case for other models and makes of computer.

………. But it is still here, albeit being updated less frequently than in the past,

Looking at everymac.com to jog my memory, I see Mac Mini upgrades every 12-18 months through to 2012.
Then a pregnant pause.
Then a massive slashing of the range in 2014 - bye-bye server (because everybody can afford 1TB of SSD now, right?), bye-bye quad core...
...and then nothing in 2015, nothing in 2016, no rumors for 2017 yet.

Ok, the 2014 loss of quad core was partly thanks to Intel, but there have been suitable quad core options for a while now, witness the HP Elite Slice, the Intel Skull Canyon NUC, or at least options with up-to-date 2 core processors (e.g. Gigabyte Brix).

as is the case for other models and makes of computer.

For example? Apart from the Mac Pro, of course.

Personally, I think they are either going to drop the Mini and the Pro completely in favour of
...thinner...

Fixed that for you.
Seriously, I hope to be proven wrong, but the MacBook Pros make Apple's thinking in that direction crystal clear.

I posted this over in the Mac Pro forum but it's worth repeating here:

Have you seen the latest version of the Mac page on the Apple website?

http://www.apple.com/mac/

Scroll the page down. MacBook Pro, MacBook, iMac. That's it. No mention whatsoever of the MacBook Air, Mac Mini or Mac Pro – it's as if they don't exist. They will still sell you them via the links to the store at the top of the page, of course, but that's clearly the end of the line for those machines. They are dead.

GEE, if you click the top of the page, on the Mac Mini Link you get this http://www.apple.com/mac-mini/

I would greatly like Apple to release Macs with innerds compatible to windows machines, that are also upgradeable.

I also USED to push Apple to my family members. Several families went Mac, because of me. I answered questions, and upgraded their machines, as their needs grew and the software/OS required - RAM and SSD. Now, I can no longer advise these families to continue with a Mac. What do you think those buying a 4gig ram, Mac mini are going to say, when the machine runs like crap, and will only get worse on every OS update?

Apple's desire to go with the lowest common denominator has its price. That price is short term gain, at the expense of long term customer commitment. You are hearing LOTS of push back from former evangelists, and that voice gets louder with each neutered update, or lack of update.

But don't worry, those voices will eventually quiet down, due to apathy and eventual abandonment.

I'm in the same boat. Over the last few years, it has become increasingly difficult to recommend Macs, and now it's pretty much impossible. When people ask me which kind of computer to buy, I don't know what to say to them because the new Macs are practically useless in my eyes.

Mac Mini with G4 processor released early 2005 (I got one), then 2 updates that year.

Move to Intel Core processor early 2006, then another update late 2006

Move to Core 2 Duo mid 2007

Next updates were early 2009 (I got one, and am still using it), then again late 2009.

Current form came along mid 2010.

Dropped the optical drive and moved to the Core i5 & quad core i7 mid 2011

Next update was late 2012.

Last update, when quad core option was dropped, was late 2014.

Dunno where the 12 - 18 months idea came from.

Not a close observer of the market, but it seems that updates for most computers are now coming less frequently than in the past.

We're getting yearly updates of almost all major brands... except Apple. Intel's NUC (closest comparable to the Mac Mini) gets updated like clockwork.

You can get a brand new Intel NUC capable of smooth 4K playback for around $300. Intel is eating Apple's lunch.

If they offered an entry level Mac Pro with an i7, 16GB ram, and a cheaper discrete gpu and could give it to me for $1500 I would be very happy.

Does it run MacOS and iWork / iLife?

iWork isn't a selling point honestly, it's a joke compared to free options let alone Microsoft office. iLife is nice but also not the selling point it was 10 years ago. Now there are plenty of comparable options on windows 10.

Does anyone care anymore?

I care, and guess at least a few others average Joes and Jills do too. Even the office geek where I work does. He likes other computers because they satisfy his inclination to tinker, but when it comes down to getting things done he prefers Mac because of the lack of hassle.

Yes, Microsoft Office has features aplenty….. far more than I need. Pages, Numbers and Keynote have all the features I need, and are easier to use. Beside that, they come pre installed, at no extra cost, as do all the other iLife apps. Buy a new Mac, plug it in and you are good to go.

Photos / iPhoto, and Garage Band may not have all the pro features, but they are adequate for my needs, which includes providing photos for the local newspaper.

I do have Office for Mac installed, but never use it these days. It doesn't open files with Thai script properly for some reason. I can open them with Pages, and export them as Word files just fine.

I do. I like using MacOS. I have used every version of Windows, except Vista. I have Windows 10 on my gaming computer, and of course I could use it for everything if I wanted to. I don't. When I'm doing things just for myself, I use Pages and Numbers (I haven't gotten to the point where I want to give myself Powerpoint/Keynote presentations, but I suppose it could happen. If it did, Keynote looks like it's a lot of fun.) That's why I want to buy a nice new Mini one of these days, but not if it's overpriced and underpowered. In that case, I think I will go the Hackintosh route because it would be interesting, and I would like to keep using MacOS. It's nice to have choice and competition. I hope Apple doesn't throw in the towel. That would be bad for everyone, including dedicated Windows users.
