What are your biggest fears about the new forthcoming Mac Pros?

Hopefully Apple are listening.

My biggest fear is Apple may think "they're crying out for 'pro' machines - let's give them what they want - at a price".

Apple, we love Macs, but please don't rip us off and treat us like mugs. Isn't it about time you rewarded your most loyal users? Be smart, be fair.

The 2013 Mac Pro was initially very competitive on price when it came out. But they have not always done this.

Biggest Fears

#1. No HDMI 2.1
#2. Ability to output HDR 4K 60fps
#3. All in one Soldered on RAM and Soldered on HDD
#4. Custom SSD so non-universal standard M.2
#5. Will definitely Not have NVIDIA GTX 2080 and or VOLTA

Apples great for Phones, iPads, MacBooks, but when it comes to heavy duty editing and video processing by Professionals in Hollywood or Press Ads in magazines on Adaobe or Maya, After Effects they have migrated to Intel Machines because in the 5 Years Apple has been asleep. The Intel and NVIDIA machines are much cheaper and much faster. And with VOLTA they are gonna get much smaller and faster yet.
Music Industry still uses Apple mostly, because Audio files and mixing and mastering take very little resources to run.

I'm quite sure when it comes out it will be expensive, but competitive, relative to what's on the market at the time. Apple may even throw the pro community a bone so to speak and price the system at something a bit more "reasonable" as an olive branch of sorts. When it and its price are announced maybe it will give us pause and be in a positive sense for a change. Instead of, "Wow they want us to pay HOW MUCH for THAT????" it would be nice if we can say, "Wow they ONLY want us to pay THAT MUCH for THAT!!!!" ;)

My biggest concern is that when Apple was talking about it being "modular", the meaning of a "module" may be an entire piece, eg. complete system box, display, keyboard etc. The mention of "upgrades" may have referred to the ease for Apple to put out new models, and not the ease of third-party upgrades to existing hardware.

I hope I'm wrong!

Pricing structure. If they do it as they did the ol 2008 models, it was magnificent value for money. Something we haven't even been close to since.

Think mine will be long overdue retirement by then and i'll be seriously looking at the next version. If there is the chance to upgrade it as a user then i'll probably get one.

My biggest fear is that they come up with something like back in the early days, because they listened to what the users presumably wanted instead of following the leadership and instinct of jobs.

(1) Stratospheric pricing
(2) Expandable and modular through proprietary interfaces and formats
(3) Limited to only Xeons + Fire Pros/Quadros (Core i7s are welcome, as are Ryzen-based or successor chips and non-pro GPUs as choices)
(4) Limited cooling capacity due to design choices (e.g., present trashcan)
(5) Hit the market late with outdated components
(6) Too forward looking with port selections

Whatever Apple produces, it will be overpriced. No points asking them for reasonable prices because it's not what they're about.

1. That it will be loud and noisy. I work in a very quiet environment and it makes all the difference to me not hearing fans.
So ideally Cube-quiet, and as large as the case needs to be because I don't need to see it hidden under the desk.

LOL

Before last week it was all about what the Mac Pro was not, now it's gonna be about what the Mac Pro won't be and how big it will fail anyway. Right now the MR crystal ball is running full steam! Apple can't win with this bunch :D

- It won't be ready until 2018 or 2019
- It won't be dual CPU
- Proprietary SSD connector
- Soldered RAM etc
- AMD instead of NVIDIA
- It still won't resemble a 5,1
- All USB-C
- No PCI slots
- It will be wildly overpriced
- After its release Apple will once again fail to update it regularly

It won't be rack mountable, it'll rely on external storage (and all expansion will be external, probably), video output won't be frame synced, and if I know Apple they'll find a way to break compatibility with the programs I depend on.

Other than that, looking forward to it.

This. I'm sure as s**t not buying another desktop without a standard PCIe GPU. Apple's proven they are not trustworthy regarding upgrades with proprietary hardware, anyone who trusts them now is a fool or a fanboy. TB3 is not a replacement for PCIe for GPU on the high end and it's straight-up idiotic to go eGPU via TB3 on a desktop.
