I don't understand why this is hardly ever brought up when color is discussed... there is a distinct functional advantage to darker matte colors doing more to absorb rather than reflect light.

I love the look of silver - it's easily my favorite. But holy heck is it eyestrain city glaring from the overhead light, esp. with a 16".
The Apple Store, with its "showroom" lighting, is not a realistic environment to view these products in. Sunlight, or at least full-spectrum lighting brings out the colors best. (Especially the silver, which looks celestial in sunlight.)

That's why I was totally turned off by the Space Black MBP's drab, muddy appearance in the store. But look at Jonathan Morrison's review video on YouTube and see how the MBP takes on a rich, hear-black hue.

Edit: changed "Space Gray" to "Space Black"

When I got my first Space Gray MacBook, I not only found it easier on my eyes, but also less distracting from the screen.

Who are we kidding? We’re gonna have chocolate or something all over it within a week anyway, let’s move on! Lol.
Speak for yourself, young Padawan. Those of us from a more civilized age keep our elegant MacBooks pristine.

that's a very realistic comparison having just come from Apple Store. I still think the silver is lighter than usual.
Perhaps, but all three MacBook Pro colors change dramatically depending on how the device is lit.

Here's a fun in-store experiment: pick up an MBP in both hands (lid open or closed) and tilt it forward. Notice how dark the color gets (Space Black goes from gray to Black, Silver goes from near-white to light gray). Then tilt it towards you and notice how it changes again.
So, is Space Black actually black? It depends of your point of view.*

(*Obi-Wan to Luke Skywalker about his father: "So, what I told you was true, from a certain point of view.")
