I did the same trade, I’m really pleased with the 14”. Still use an M1 Air for work, amazing computer that runs circles around the outgoing 2017 15” MBP. Figurative… ?
that m1 air is amazing for us non pros, so much power. Great machine!

I don't know about bookshelf speakers, there's still an advantage to physical size, the ability to move air around. But this MBP certainly takes the fight to "computer" or "desktop" speakers, those are redundant now.

But the Dolby Atmos thing...man, it trips me out. Magic.
Somehow Dolby Atmos is way more impressive to me on something like my Mac speakers or AirPods because I can't honestly comprehend how they make such a small piece of hardware sound that great. My Sonos system also does Atmos, which also sounds amazing, but when my iPhone or Mac are able to bend sound around my head like that from those tiny speakers? That blows my mind.

M1 Air was the first MacBook or laptop in general that I have ever actually enjoyed using in a portable situation. FOR ONCE, I had a notebook that could run all my software quickly all day long without me having outlet anxiety and a sore shoulder from how much it weighed in my laptop bag. I fear the 16" MBP treads into that weight class, but the 14" is absolutely perfect for me in that regard.

It’s a really great laptop, one of Apple’s best ever.

I got mine yesterday, base model 14in. It seems blazing quick with all apps and barely got lukewarm when I was transferring files etc.

I also have a 2019 MBP 13in and this M1 runs rings around it tbh. The keyboard is obviously far superior and the screen on this M1 is incredible, it’s a stunning display. My older MBP used to get toasty hot just watching video after a while and the fans would be blasting away. I did like the touch bar though on the old version, it was a nice thing to use. I love that MagSafe is back and is great quality.

The last MacBook Pro I personally owned was in 2013 when I bought a 13" Intel model. It was not a great experience. I was co-hosting and co-managing a podcast at the time, and I had to start recording on my iPad instead of the Mac because I got tired of gating out all the fan noise and not being able to use the thing anywhere near my actual lap because it would get so hot.

The M1 MBP and M1 Pro MBP I have owned have both been stellar. I'm really jazzed up about Apple Silicon.

Yeah, I was very very surprised at how hot the older MBP got. And I’m not a taxing, power user. Simple things like watching youtube or movies and the thing got seriously hot and the fans could really scream at times.

I remember the first summer I had that machine--I was trying to watch Netflix on it in bed and ended up sweating because the bottom of the chassis was so hot. I kicked it to the curb and went iPad Pro-only for the next several years--all the way up until M1.

Here
I ended up purchasing a 14" MacBook Pro after a disappointing experience with the Mac Studio and it was the closest system that matched my needs. I have to admit that this is a really nice laptop. The build quality is top notch, the display is really amazing, and even with the M1 Max variant the system runs relatively cool and better life has been impressive the few times I've used it.

I really like the overall design and I'm just incredibly impressed how the fans are essentially off when used as a portable and even when connected to a Studio Display in clamshell they don't always come on and are silent. I remember using my 7 year old MacBook Pro with a 1440p display and it'd get hot and nosy immediately. This system is rarely beyond "slightly warm."

Also, Apple Silicon has made interplay with external displays a much nicer experience.

Right now, final purchase price matters to me. I was seriously thinking about picking up a base 14-inch MBP. But Costco had a sale on what I call the "base upgrade" model on Apple's website. That is to say, the version with the 10-core CPU and 16-core GPU (two steps up from the stock base model), 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. And Costco's price was just a tick above Apple's price for the base model. Never mind the arguments over 16GB vs. 32GB of RAM. I pulled the trigger. This may become my primary computer - at least for a while - depending on how it does compared to my 2019 27-inch i5 9600K iMac. Perhaps by Christmas a Mac Studio will become my desktop computer. I want to see what Apple does in terms of high-end Mac Minis first.

Very impressed with the battery. I charged mine overnight as I was due to fly out to Dallas this afternoon at 12pm. Typical airline, Delta kept us at Dublin Airport until 17:30 this evening only to tell us the flight was cancelled! I used the MPB at various times throughout the day to check emails and then re-book my flight tomorrow. I'm now home and typing this on the MBP and the battery is reading 100%! I took it off the charger at 07:30 this morning.

Pretty good.

And screw it, I just bought Applecare+. I'll be travelling with this MBP a lot besides using it as my desktop so for peace of mind, I'll do it. I'm not clumsy but putting this unit in and out of airport security trays etc, the potential for accidental damage is always there.

I am also coming from 2019 16'' to 16.2'' M1 Max and I'm loving it. No more hot backplate, no more noise when I use Final Cut Pro. I like the use internal voice recorder of Final Cut Pro with internal microphone. Everytime I record voice my voice was coming so noisy due to fan noise. Now problem solved.

The battery life is so good I didn’t even open the magsafe charger, lol. It’s literally still in the original packaging in the box. I use the tiny charger for my ipad pro if I need to charge my laptop overnight. I don’t even take a charger with me when I go to work with this thing and it lasts all day, no problem.

I have 2 2014 macbook pros and a 2018 mac mini along with the m1 MacBook air,
I think that I may upgrade the mini to the 14" and sell the mini and one of the 2014s.
I think the 14" could be my forever computer! :)

While I did unwrap the charger and use it, I am amazed at the battery. I use mine at work for some jobs that are heavier to handle then my 2014 5K iMac can handle, or at least I can handle it faster on the new MBP M1 Max. Performance is fantastic and the battery is incredible. The lowest I have been is down to 50% at the end of a 10 hour work day using Adobe CC.

I’m so impressed with my 16 MBP Max. I did a 4 hour Zoom meeting last night and it was cold as a cucumber. Max temps were 45C. Fans at zero. Battery had 45% left at the end. My past Macs would run hot and I had to have them plugged in for sure.

All I can say is “Finally”…

I spent so much money over the years to “Finally” get a Laptop that “just works”. The power I need and the balance of form AND function (though I did like previous forms from Ivy) :)

If the arrow keys were bigger, I could say (and I am very picky..that this IS THE BEST LAPTOP I have EVER owned. Not my favorite…but the best!!!

Home Run Apple!!!!
