What I responded to was not more space but useable space.

Well, yes, you get a few more lines of text because the menu is in the bezel. For someone like me who works with text documents all day long it actually makes a difference, not a big one, but still.

As I said: Eye of the beholder.

Objectively more usable space is not an eye of the beholder thing, it's a fact. Whether the beholder likes the way it looks or not is irrelevant. The new MBPs offer more usable space compared to older MBPs they are replacing, period.
Would you please STOP telling me that my opinion is wrong. You like it? Fine. I don't. Period. End of story. Now shut up about it.

It's my opinion that I am free to point out when opinions are stated as facts, even if the person stating the opinion as a fact doesn't like it. Also, welcome to the internet -- people disagree, and getting heated over it doesn't do anyone any good. 🍻

I didn't ask for your opinion therefore I don't care what it is. Again: If you like it: Fine, I do not. I am not trying to tell you your opinion is wrong, I'd appreciate the same respect from you.

Having the opinion of not liking it is perfectly valid. I wasn't responding to that, but to the "eye of the beholder" statement. I'm sorry if I came off as disrespectful; you are entitled to any opinion you'd like to have. That said, stating opinions as facts will typically prompt someone to respond, whether you asked for their opinion (or, correction) on the matter or not.

I did not state an opinion as fact. I clearly said it is in the eye of the beholder.

That's in the eye of the beholder.

It is a pro machine alright. To notch performance in an package that completely lacks "I must have that machine because it is beautiful". No 10 Gb Ethernet in a Pro machine but a consumer SD card reader? Who has Apple been listening to?

In my case, when I have ethernet, I also have KB/M and external displays. At which point, a Thunderbolt or USB-C dock is more useful. I use my SD card dongle plenty, while I haven't bothered with an Ethernet dongle.

If you are plugging in more often in conference rooms or the like where you don't have a desk setup and just need the network hookup available, I can see your point though.

I think SD and HDMI are in the list of ports you may need when traveling and absolutely can't do without. If you have to connect to a conference room, or load images from your camera... either you remembered to bring the dongles or there's no alternative. It's a total non-starter. Kind of like forgetting the charger of the camera. Forgetting Ethernet likely has more workarounds IMHO.

The bezel is stupid. But enough with all of the crying about it. Sheeeeeeeeeeeesh.

These laptops are as revolutionary as the aluminum iMac era/unibody era of 2007.
Legit powerhouse of a machine with aesthetics to match.
Due to a work laptop always being supplied, I've managed photo work on my 2010 MBP to which I maxed the RAM on and added an SSD.

This update has been long awaited by me. The new iMac sealed the deal for me in that it was what I was waiting for and didn't love the re-design....so I decided to wait until yesterdays notebooks dropped.
I overspecked a 14" with an M1Max.
I'm beyond excited.

Thanks! So if there is a software setting that does that, then you will order one?
Probably not. A fixed bezel is concrete, adding in a programmable space is hard, and I still think it would look ugly if it didn't look like a bezel straight across with no breaks between the notch and the screen, and yes, you will be able to see it, no matter what they do with the screen. I can see it on my iPhone in dark mode and black wallpaper.

If I buy anything soon I'll buy a new Windows laptop, or if I feel adventurous, I'll buy a 12.9" iPadPro. $2800. Gulp.

Maybe a Dell XPS13 with an OLED, or maybe a Ryzen 9 laptop.

Because that would be so trivial to implement that I’m sure it’s on the way.
I think it's a bit harder than you think and they never did it for the iPhone... We're talking about moving reserved system display space, and not only does Apple have to program the OS to do it, but apps have to understand it may be moved and switch what they do too. And then there's external screen and what are they going to do there, especially if you mirror! It gives my coding nerves the jitters...

I have an iPhone 13 Pro and I don't even notice the notch. I also chose a background that's dark at the top which really allows it so blend in. I'll do the same when my MacBook arrives next week.
A lot of people say that, but I had an X, then an 11 Pro Max, then I just got so tired of looking at the notch, I bought an android phone. And yes, I had dark mode and black wallpaper no less, but I still saw the notch, especially when I did anything off the home screen.
Yeh the M1 Max is incredible. I went for the base M1 Pro as it's more than enough for my needs - I only do a little 3D modeling work.
It'll be a nice machine, I have no doubt of that. If MacOS does all you need, you can't get anything better right now except a Mac Pro, and those are hard to carry around. :)

For me, maybe if they make a Mini with a Pro or Max M1, as long as they don't mess up the menu bar if you *don't* have a notch!

You have no understanding of how to use that statement. Hint: you are using it incorrectly and that is not in the eye of the beholder. That is not arguable. Your opinion of not liking it is not wrong. Your use of someone stating a fact and then you (quoting) saying that is in the eye of the beholder is 100% wrong and that is not my opinion. That is fact. Since the menu is pushed up into that space and in 100% of the cases the menu is useable it is not arguable.

Fair enough I suppose. I'd take the extra screen real estate every time.
If I wanted more screen space, I'd get the bigger 15", or go with an external monitor.
Though I'd question how distracting it would be with a dark wallpaper (or at all really, after the first hour or so, but particularly with a dark wallpaper)
I can't stand it on my iPhone 11 Pro Max with those settings. The trick is, what apps you might be running might not have a dark mode, or their dark mode isn't dark enough in that area, or you'll still be able to see the notch anyway (I do) That notch only got bad to me after a period of time. It started out as mildly annoying, and gradually got worse from there -- for 4 years, and I couldn't stand it any more. And I really wanted to trade in my M1 MBA too.

Welcome to Mac ownership. There will always be one great feature just six months away, and waiting for it is a sure path to madness.
I concur! I waited close to two years for these machines, and while I guess it was worth the wait, I've had to suffer with a failing machine.

These should be ridiculously fast lappys. Not just the 10 Cores and the 16/32 GPU cores but using SSDs over twice as fast as before, LDPPR5 for RAM and massive memory bandwidths. Then there are the "other" accelerators which make the M1Pro/Max in effect their own Afterburner units.

It seems you have no understanding.
It is absolutely in the eye of the beholder.
What you SEE is extra space left and right of the notch.
What others SEE is a menubar that's cut in two, hence worthless and waste of space.
Forever you have to see that shape and can't ignore it...
