does it not bother you that application menus are probably split and look strange? (gaps around the notch)
having half of the menu bar to the left and other items to the right of the notch will definitely feel new.

If I wanted more screen space, I'd get the bigger 15", or go with an external monitor.

I can't stand it on my iPhone 11 Pro Max with those settings. The trick is, what apps you might be running might not have a dark mode, or their dark mode isn't dark enough in that area, or you'll still be able to see the notch anyway (I do) That notch only got bad to me after a period of time. It started out as mildly annoying, and gradually got worse from there -- for 4 years, and I couldn't stand it any more. And I really wanted to trade in my M1 MBA too.

The area either side of the notch is taken up by the macOS menubar, not the app you’re using.

No Face-ID is a massive fail though.

It's a common complain, but i have noticed that when i keep my iPad pro at a "laptop" distance on the desk, it always says face too far. Annoying as hell. While I prefer faceId to touchId on phone, on the iPad it's definitely the other way around. I wonder if that's the reason why they skipped faceId on MBP. Or if the components would have been too thick for the lid? Or the simple cost reasons.

I'm typing this on my m1 mbp, and i'm looking at my notch right now. To the left and right of it is a black border and nothing else - wasted space. On the new ones - you get screen.

If you really dont like seeing it - add a pure black bar to the top of your wallpaper. There - gone. (mini-LED gives you pure blacks lets not forget).

I respect everyone has their own opinion, but I'm just glad I'm not one to be bothered by something so trivial like extra screen space.

Exactly. I have a 2020 MacBook Air. If Apple called me up and said we have a wait to add some screen space that will go up and move the menus up but there will be a notch where the camera currently is and it is of no cost to you I woudlddo it in a second. IN other words I will gladly move the menus up and since 99% of the time I have nothing in the middle of the menu bar anyways what do I care. In the rare times that I do it moves it over to the right slightly where I still have space 99% of the time and eventually I get to the point where my upper right screen icons are still there.

It seems you have no understanding.
It is absolutely in the eye of the beholder.
What you SEE is extra space left and right of the notch.
What others SEE is a menubar that's cut in two, hence worthless and waste of space.
Forever you have to see that shape and can't ignore it...

Again you need to read what he wrote. You also have no understanding how to use this phrase. I don't SEE anything. What IS there is extra space to the left and right of the notch. The term extra pertains to the space not being there on any other Mac laptop currently thus the term extra.

Now if you feel that space is worthless and a waste of space that certainly is in the eye of the beholder. The fact that it is there is not in the eye of the beholder. In fact by you calling it worthless or a waste of space your are acknowledging that the space is there, thus you can't say someone saying the space exists is in the eye of the beholder which is what that poster did.

Where does it go from here? The only things they can improve is reduce the lower bezel (which kinda looks the same as before) and add Face ID ... well and lower the price 2250 euro is A LOT OF MONEY 1700 euro would have been okay oh well it's apple!

A lot of people say that, but I had an X, then an 11 Pro Max, then I just got so tired of looking at the notch, I bought an android phone. And yes, I had dark mode and black wallpaper no less, but I still saw the notch, especially when I did anything off the home screen.

It'll be a nice machine, I have no doubt of that. If MacOS does all you need, you can't get anything better right now except a Mac Pro, and those are hard to carry around.

For me, maybe if they make a Mini with a Pro or Max M1, as long as they don't mess up the menu bar if you *don't* have a notch!

I'm sorry it bothers you as much as it does. I went from an iPhone 6s to a 13 Pro and thought I would be annoyed by the notch and lack of TouchID and I really wasn't bothered by either. I'm an engineer so for me function over form is always appreciated.

I used to be a Windows/Linux guy for years, built more PC's and servers than I can count. Then I got my first iPhone, then a MacBook and now I'm completely converted. Everything just works, whilst with my Linux and Windows I was forever tinkering and fixing things, or reformatting my Windows machine every year. With Macs I just keep them up to date and aside from a few buys at big OS releases I basically have no issues. The UI experience is in a different league to the other guys.

I moved my parents into Apple and they are much happier, so many less IT issues I have to deal with and they love the tight integration with everything and Apple TV.

The one thing I cant stand is Android, I just hate the way it feels to use and I've never liked Samsung phones. My iPhone 13 Pro feels like a solid piece of metal and glass. Also I absolutely hate Alphabet/Google and avoid all of their services.

That was my thought too. I thought they'd make it big enough for any future developments like improved FaceTime camera or FaceID. I think people are making too much of an issue out of the notch, that part of my menu bar is virtually always empty anyway and I run my system in dark mode so I won't notice it. I'm just thankful I'll finally have a good FaceTime camera in my MacBook which is vital for someone like me who lives in both the US and UK with family in both.

It has Touch ID. I assume you meant Face ID. I’d like to see more of the features trickle down to the Air such as the ProMotion display and better speakers and microphone. Not all of us need the M1 Pro or the additional weight.

2250 is cheap for a macbook, but i want the 3990 euro spec, thats allowed call expensive ?

Prompted by my discussion with @m1mavrerick, I did a screen grab of Apple's renders of the old vs. new 16" MBPs and cropped to align the top of the cases and cut off the feet from the newer model.

To me, the flatter edge + feet seems to add to the thickness illusion.

It is very disappointing, but it's understandable. Many sources have repeated it just isn't feasible with the thinness of the lid. Maybe eventually the technology behind Face ID will shrink, but that time is not now.

Having seen how they have implemented it, yes it is better with it than without it. The alternative is not some fanciful idea about invisible cameras and sensors. The alternative is to still have a full width black bezel at the top. Instead we move the menu bar into that space, and give everyone more vertical space, something that is precious on these small displays. Huge win.

I'm on a 12" Macbook and that section of my menu bar is basically never used, on a big 14" display I have no issue.

People are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Apple really have been showing the industry how it’s done with their tech and chips lately.

I really really like the new macs. As a windows gamer I can’t just jump ship but honestly those processors are amazing.

My Alienware generates so much heat and in intense sessions won’t even last 2 hours so it has to be plugged in.

I think my next computer will be a MacBook Pro or maybe a Mac mini.

True, kinda like how they offer both touchID and unlocking with watch.

False, the camera module isn't a pinhole. The function light and ambient light sensor are packaged with it as well. This is the camera from a current MacBook Pro. This unit was formerly obscured by the bezel. The bezel has been shrunk on either side of the camera exposing it like something in the water when in the tide goes out. The "notch" was always there. Now we can see it because the surrounding bezel is now screen.
