So if the mac mini lives on this is what i think it will look like concidering the other small apple devices with hard drives
Stats:
Base
~2.4Ghz
~2GB Ram
~200GB HDD

Premium
~2.8Ghz
~2GB ram
~250GB HDD

Best Options
~2.8Ghz
~4GB ram
~500GB HDD

(Just a little of my handy work:) )

I don't think you can physically fit a optical drive and those components into something that size.

At most they can shave half an inch off the height of a mac mini without dangerously compromising cooling too.

a little higher and without an optical drive, its not that impossible however
 
Patiently awaiting a Mini update and if it's even smaller, it's all good.

However, as great as those specs would be, it'll follow MacBook specs at best:

Base - 2.1GHz / 1G / 120HD / Combo
Prime - 2.4GHz / 2GB / 160-200HD / SD

I wouldn't be surprised if it followed last generation macbook specs.

Base - 2.0 GHz
Prime - 2.2 GHz

Ever heard of the MacBook Pro? It's thinner than that. Apple could do it.

lol its funny how people forget this
when you think about it, the bottom part of the macbook pro is about 0.7 inches, and i bet the optical drive would only take up about 0.4 to 0.6,
so it seems like fitting the mac mini would be quite possible especially with the extra surface area.

I would say the base would be 2.0 Ghz, 2.2 Ghz, not 2.4 (if it was, it would be better than the iMac)
and 1 Gb of RAM, not 2.

I too would like one. (new updated one)
 
do you think there could also be a super low energy mac mini utilizing the intel atom processor?

i'd love to see something like that draws very little power as a cheap/green intro mac. a solo 1.6ghz with a gig of ram would be plenty for most low end uses like e-mail/web/quicken etc. atom's are cheap too. can get a mini itx mobo + cpu with everything builtin (comparable specs to mac mini 1.6ghz core solo) for 70 bucks on newegg/tigerdirect.

either that or i wouldn't be surprised to see that chip used in the next appleTV update
 
nice mockup but you forgot the dvi/vga port. :)

also, i think to make more performance difference, it think the low-end comp would come with 1GB ram with BTO of 2 and 4

i figured they would follow the new MB's specs and that is my guess as what they will be:cool:

oh yeah the pro has nothing under the drive i know but if u think about it it could be done with a 2.5in HDD maybe 1.5" thick instead of 1.1"
 
I'm ready. Whatever they decide I'll be pulling the trigger. Moving away from Windows as soon as the new Mini is ready.

Whenever that is! I wonder what the deal is with this. The mini is long, long overdue for some sort of attention, but maybe it's getting lost in the wake of the iPhone and such. Too bad. It's a nice little machine.

yeah i am not interested in buying one but i would like to see apple get a bigger share of the sub $1000 computers

If they want to sell more than five, yes. Despite the love affair Steve has with all things downloadable, nobody's going to jack down $600 or so for an "entry-level" computer without an optical drive. The MBA wasn't made to be a primary computer. The Mac Mini is. You're going to have to put software on it somehow, and it's just ludicrous to not have an optical drive.

In fact, I'd like to take a big, heavy Blu-ray Disc player and beat Steve over the head with it until he realizes we want it!!!!! You can get a sub-$1000 Dell Inspiron with one, but the Mac line is too good for it?
