I'm with AC...I'm starting to think that a Mini update is the last thing Apple is working on.

It's probably on the list with these other products:

G5 PowerBook
iPhone 3G w/SBG slot (stick of bubble gum)
iMac that changes smell with what's on your screen
iPod Classic w/boomerang attachment
MacBook that transforms into an iPod (to coincide with the Transformers 2 movie release)

As I posted earlier (although the Cinema Displays were the highlight there):

The MBA's position on that food chain seems weird considering, as far as I can tell, that it's a very niche product. I know very many people with MacBooks, fewer with MacBook Pros, none with an Air. In fact, I don't know anybody with a computer in that class. Seems kinda weird that Apple spends so much time on such a limited-appeal product, so maybe they don't.

I do agree that the fiber content of iPod socks does get much more R&D than the Mac Mini.

here are my dreams for the mac mini:

base end: 2.0 GHz Penryn
160 GB HD
1 GB RAM
no optical drive

high end: 2.2 GHz Penryn
250 GB HD
2 GB RAM
no optical drive

up to 4 GB RAM, up to 500 GB HDs
the macbook air optical drive now becomes the apple external optical drive, that works on all apple computers..

ahh in a perfect world..

i LOL'd at the importance chart.. iPod socks and newton.. doesnt get better than that

niche markets

In the real world, the freakin' iMac should be a niche product! It's cool... if you are pals with Paris Hilton and want to be seen with a cute computer. Apple needs to come out with a mainstream computer "for the majority of us" instead of the rest of us. I love my outdated, underpowered G4 Mini and I want to step it up several notches. I guess a refurb Pro is my only shot. I am getting frustrated.

Does it even need that much R&D? Just upgrade the thing, and that would be a huge step in the right direction. The form factor is fine, so gut a MacBook and shove it in there.

im guessing apple is just waiting for intel to discontinue the components so they can drop it be it "no fault of there own"

THE PIPPIN 2! IT LIVES! :D

in all seriousness, if they made a 2.5 or 2.6 ghz mac mini with 4 gb of ram and a 500 gb hard drive, then make it all alum with a black glass apple on the top, i'd be allll over it.

After doing some shopping for a Dell PC, I can definitely agree with you on that. You're stuck with either a basic Mac (the Mini) or you gotta triple your budget to get more than you need (Mac Pro) or get a display you may or may not need (iMac). A HUGE hole there that the Windows world has a grip on.

If Apple created a mid-tower Mac that was about $1000 for the same stuff that's in a $1500 iMac, you'd have tons of people buying it. If they have enough time to design the MacBook Air, they could surely design something that the vast majority of computer users already have.

i reckon apple could put the MacBook Air components in a Mac Mini to make it TRUELY small (like in the OP's post)

otherwise it'll just be a standard update with current MacBook specs

but it has to come out soon doesn't it? surely apple couldn't FORGET a product?

The price will be too high for the Mini. The processor, even though it is weaker, costs more due to the design.

I do expect the Mini to finally get a new smaller case, and I agree with some that the optical drive should be dropped with the ability to use the Macbook Air Superdrive.

I want the iMac to lose its optical as well, and replace it with a second hard drive. Could be cool to have one SSD (64 gigs) for the Apps, and the other a traditional hard drive (1tb) for media.

A new Mac Mini is on my most wanted list. I couldn't care less about the macbook air or some such, I want a small but powerful computer that I can use as a media center.

There were so many rumours about the new Mac Mini a couple of months ago. What happened to it?

Your mock-up is accurate, but two things:

1. Base model 2.0GHz and Top 2.2GHz
2. Less USB ports (Below)

ue7d

It would have to be wider to accommodate the optical drive and hard drive, if it gets made thinner, perhaps more apple-tv like.

Keep in mind also that the mac mini uses a laptop hard drive, so it is unlikely in my opinion to see anything above 250GB in the next revision... if that next revision comes:(

I'd love for them to get rid of the external power supply. If anything, at the very least make it similar to the Macbook or the Macbook Pro's.
Having the power supply external means a major source of heat is eliminated, which means quieter fans. I think this is one of the nicest features of the mini. And if by "similar to the Macbook" you mean with an unsecured connector, I don't think that's such a good idea either. It's a desktop, you don't plug the thing in where you're going to trip over the wires.

I understand, I'm saying I'd be nice if they could do it. And I'm talking about the "wall wort" style, not the Magsafe.

i love this

But isn't the mini just a repackaged/reengineered MacBook?

yes my point exactly the MB specs go up so do the mini's

I wish Apple would release like a miniature version of the Mac Pro. Something 1/4 of the size, it would be awesome!:)

I second! That'd actually be my dream machine~!

Onto the next gen mini, hope Apple would be putting a 7200 rpm drive in it...
