Thanks for the info! Which model did you have before, and what's the difference in power in terms of using it? Also, what do you expect the depreciation to be? i.e. 10% per year.
I had the original 15" Retina MBP from 2012 (Apple Certified refurb), which I soon regretted buying because just a few months later the Late 2013 MBPs appeared with greatly improved specs ( as often happens with the 2nd edition of Apple products).

Upgrading to the 2015 model I immediately noticed the much smoother graphics on the retina display. Speaking of the display, it's better looking, and easier on the eyes, with richer, deeper blacks. The computer feels faster overall, thanks to the 4x speed. I love the new Force touch trackpad, and could never go back to the old style, which now feels clunky to me. Battery life is a big improvement: I can now get through the whole day without worrying.

As for depreciation, expect 10% - 15%, but only for the first year. The percentage tends to get larger per year after that. If you are in New York City, where there's much more competition from people selling their Macs, the value can drop even faster.

The worst time to sell is right after a new model launch -- that's when the market is flooded. It's better to wait a few weeks until all the action is died down. However, the best scenario is selling on a solid rumor before the launch. This way you get a really good price, and will only have to be without your Mac for a few days.

Thank you prospervic, I really appreciate it! I currently have the 13" non retina MBP form 2012, so the jump from mine would be similar to you but of course better graphics with the new retina display that I haven't experienced yet on the MBP.

I'd be upgrading to a complete top-spec 15" 2015 MBP so I can imagine a hell of a lot of improvements. I've just updated my current MBP to El Capitan today, which should have offered better CPU and graphics efficiency. I was hoping that would stop me from needing to buy my new MBP this year, but I can't see any difference with it whatsoever and it still overheats unnecessarily so I think I might take the dive and buy the 2015 model. Then possibly upgrade to the Skylake version next year if all seems clear with bugs and such.

10 - 15% depreciation I can deal with so I'll need to try to live without my laptop for a week or two (for new MBP waiting list/delivery) if I sell it before the release of the new version. Might be difficult bearing in mind I'll be at university then and possibly having exams, so I'll need to see how that goes. Thankfully I don't live in NYC or any other large city so selling hopefully won't be too much of an issue. Thanks again for the info!

I think the macbook pro is honestly perfectly put together. Any slimmer and wed be dropping them like crazy and have to sacrifice ports that i am not ready to get rid of. Ive thought about the space around the keyboard on my 15" being different but i cannot imagine how they would accomplish that being that the screen is big and requires the bottom to be uniform to close properly. Who knows though apple has done some pretty amazing things but i for one do not want to see slimmer.

Note- i use a 15 while at the house and a 13 for work and travel. I love both equally.

understandable to feel that way, but realistically, a few years down the line, you'll be using a newer macbook pro, loving that, and thinking it's as good as it gets. tech stuff will continue to change, and we'll adapt...and it will be (mostly) a good thing...

Now Skylake is out and Intel will be releasing more and more processors during the rest of the year, how likely do you think a redesign will be for the next Macbook Pro update?

I guess this update will be around January 2016? Or do you have reasons to believe otherwise?

Can hardly hold the thing pulling it out of the bag now can only imagine if it were to be thinner....

i might be missing something, but i don't think there was anything remotely resembling a 4x speed increase from 2012 to 2015. my late 2013 was only about 25% faster than the 2011 machine i upgraded from, and while i've been hoping for a sizeable performance jump on the horizon, the current crop only seems to be about 10% faster than my 2013.

4x speed refers to the SSD (left that out of my sentence by mistake), which is measurable using Blackmagic Disk Speed Test.

Ah! Got it. It is good that they've been consistently ratcheting up the performance in that department. I'd just love to see some similar breakthroughs in cpu/gpu!

First time owning a MB. I got the 13" MBP 15 and I feel like it was a great decision. There was an identity crisis imo among the 2015 models all on the market now 13" or smaller. I got the MBP since it was the cheapest one w/ 8 GB of RAM for me. From what I worked w/, it's a lot better. A 2.3 GHz dual core i5 2011 processor, 4GB of RAM, 500GB HDD Dell Inspiron 17R. Pretty horrible machine w/ a LCD replacement, two motherboard replacements, and one HDD replacement in the first 6 months of ownership. Now, it lasts one hr on battery and the keyboard is broken. I'll just get Windows 10 on it and use it to experiment w/ software. It went through a lot when I changed it to Ubuntu twice.

So the next 15" MBP will have skylake cpu this is for sure, but what dGPU ? i don't think will be a redesign but they will use usb-c instead of usb, i hope a better speakers because the macbook already had better speakers than MBA and even than 13" MBP, very close to the 15", so for that kind of money and space i expect Apple will improve the speakers

I really hope they are not stupid enough to get rid of MagSafe and a glowing  logo in the next redesign.

People need to separate Skylake from a redesign, the two are not intertwined. Any redesign is almost certainly happening next year, because there are no part leaks or even strong rumors that would indicate anything coming this year. Skylake will be a bump like any other, the interesting things are locked to come next year (dGPU, new chassis, TB3, more power efficient display, etc...).

This sounds about right.

Could TouchID show up on the 2016 model?

I really hope so. I'm wondering if it'd be possible to build that into the ForceTouch trackpads. I'm not sure where else they could put it without it looking out of place. Building it into the function key would be interesting.

I would've waited for Skylake but I needed a new laptop here and now, so I had to settle for the 2015 edition.

I think there were no leaked parts for the rMB either so a redesign is still possible this year.
