The most ridiculous idea is Apple adding a second port to the rMB 12, it's not going to happen. The rMB is more of a statement than a product. Sort of like: "This is our vision of the future of the notebook." I think the one port decision conveyed that pretty clearly.

Edit: to clear things up, don't expect to see more than 2 USB-C TB3 ports on the next rMBP redesign. Those controllers only support a max of two port, and split the bandwidth when used simultaneously. Unless Apple decides to use 2 separate TB3 controllers the possibility of a 15" rMBP with 3 USB-C ports like das fuhrer suggested above, is next to none.

I guess back in 2008 - 2009 when Apple introduced the MBA someone here said exactly that and two years later: boom, a second usb port and a sd-card reader.

One thing is aim to the future, the other being dumb. One port, the same port you use for charging is dumb.

Fun fact: people is actually making money with usb-c adapters for the MB12 in kickstarter. Look at this, looks like a
prosthesis to give it back its usefull limbs.

Is there any betting sites that will take bets on the upcoming update event? if so i would love to place a bet that most macrumor members will be greatly disappointed in 20 hours :) the lack of rumors and leaks to hint the speculated upcoming laptop updates by members and other sites should indicate that it´s very unlikely... if there are any updates at all i am sure it will only be very minor updates... just wondering - who here actually believes (not wish) that there will be updates to the design on the mbp or extra ports on the rmb for that matter..

however it´s a sure bet that moste readers will be outraged and disappointed ;)

anyway happy media everyone - hope we will se some ground breaking watch bands:rolleyes:

sent from my Iphone

I don't think anyone is expecting these updates today. But feel free to put a bet on if that's what will help you through the day :)

Hmm, so if Apple is releasing the new MBPs at WWDC, wouldn't it mean Skylake will be mid-life-end of life cycle by then? And this will be a very late update for Apple? Could it be that Apple is going after Kaby Lake instead (this will not be the first time for Apple to get exclusivity over other vendors)?

And since all the Watches and Pads hooplas announcement is done, looks like this year WWDC will be focused onto Macs again? Like how it was a few years ago.

Though it's also possible for Apple to release it earlier then WWDC but I wonder what they'll announce then during the event if they have nothing to show.

That event was like a BIG **** you to all laptop users !! so they will keep pushing the "new and lightyears ahead" rMB .. hope the FBI ****s you like bitches you are ..

Ideally, their lineup should consist of:
- entry level 12" model with Core M, same as current Macbook with minor tweaks (2x USB-C, HD webcam)
- 13" or 14" model (doesn't really matter) based off i5/i7 15W Skylake chip with Iris, DDR4, really fast SSD, 1600p resolution, 2x USB-C and 2x USB 3.0;
- 15.4" model based off i7 45W chips with Iris Pro and something like Magsafe and other legacy ports.

Standard on any model, butterfly keyboard (tried twice, my body is ready), Force Touch, improved speakers, Macbook-like slender form factor, and integrated graphics.

Also release a Thunderbolt enclosure for dedicated graphics with something like a 970m 6GB on it, so thermal issues are taken care of, and everybody is happy.

Phase out every other model. That's it.

Wow okay. That's a bit much. I said the event should have been called "Let us poop you in", but that is a bit extreme. Chill. We should be getting new gimped Macs before or at WWDC. Breathe.

More sad than true.
Apple's Mac lineup has been very profitable by itself, and in constant growth since, like, forever.
There have been countless articles like that, b*tching about Apple's decisions for years.
Some parts are certainly neglected, mostly the desktop division, which has been a smaller deal than the laptop one for at least a decade. But the notebooks have always been cutting edge and will always be.
Things like the 15" being still stuck on Haswell, can be explained because the chips released by Intel aren't always suitable. The ones having Iris Pro and Iris are always delayed for some reason.

The dream of seeing a 13" MBP with a dedicated GPU and quad core i7 like specs are over.

Apple appears to have positioned the MBP as a prosumer laptop. If you need more power, buy an iMac or Mac Pro.

In one sense I get their dilemma. Too good specs would kill iMac sales. That said, a new design is sorely due.

Don't overlook the fact that April 1 is Apple's fortieth birthday as a company - they might have some kind of little surprise in the works for that day ;)
Amen to that.

Im as happy with what mac stuff Ive got today, as I was the day i bought it, in the sense that I don't want anything else.

The new macs had better be better, but of course they will be.

Regarding the keynote speech, apple are clearly targeting folk who don't know how to stretch the legs of their computers beyond very casual home use, to make such a nonsensical claim that the 600m 5+ year old PC's could be replaced with an iPad pro. Obviously they wish to continue growing the number of app store users they have, so they can take a fat slice of the 30% commission (as they do) each time an app sells, but the iPad pro will never be a competitor to a PC. Unless they tell the world it is, and folk go out and buy one thinking it will. Which... the less knowledgeable users will end up doing. Or, unless the iPads evolve sufficiently that they are on a much greater level, a competitor to a pc or mac, which they currently are NOT.

Marketing at its most blatantly worst. By that I mean, apple are simply telling users what they want and hope and believe that users will believe.

Scarily, folk will go out and replace their PC with an iPad pro, thinking it will do everything the PC will... Apples app store growth is a frightening prospect. Im very happy with the mac, but am glad there are competitors out there, too.

Here is a video that the YouTube Channel EveryThingApplePro did
which has the list of upgrades that he would like to see. I think that the list is pretty reasonable, nothing overly outrageous.

Outstanding overview of good upgrades, and I agree with them all, except I am one with the thickness of my mid-2014 MBP, if it means retaining and or keeping more functionality, such as the ports.

Sounds awesome to me. the Iris 580 is "capable" enough to game/edit on the go and once home you can use an eGPU option with a R9 380-390-Fury (since Apple uses OpenCL which is better supported by AMD cards).

Having to pay $1000 more for any sort of dedicated graphics solution, and lose any sort of portability from it isn't going to make anyone happy.

15" should have a model without a dGPU and a model with one, and they should both support thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosures.

If we do get a redesign, I think we're likely to see something that takes big cues from both the MacBook and MacBook Air - taking some of the space saving design features of the MacBook, but still large enough for sufficient ports.

I think the line-up will also remain a little distorted until they can get the MacBook down to a entry level price point - so I expect we'll either see a spec bump to the current Air or 13" non-retinan Pro to hold up the low end.

For me though, the new Pro's just need to show marked improvements overall (battery, cpu and graphics) whilst maintaining the current price points and then I'm ready to buy.

In 2012 we had an entry level price point of 1199$
So this year if the macbook gets $100 cut the macbook air can be eliminated with the clasic mbp too

So Apple would raise their laptop entry level price point by $300? The 11" MBA is $900. Seems like a stiff deal, given the rMB is less powerful and has less ports.

As far as the MBP, they'll use the current 13" rMBP as the new classic MBP / entry pro model and drop the price.

I find Apple product lineup is getting too crowded lately.

Long time ago:
MacBook: 13 inch
MacBookPro: 15 inch, 17 inch

then they intro the Air which many accepts as Apple Ultraportable notebook and then they decided to "upgrade" the 13 inch MB to be under the same MBP range and dropping the 17" model when the retina display arrive, so we end up:
11" MBA, 13" MBA
13" MBP, 15" MBP

There's still a clear distinction among models, though admittedly the MBA is starting to be out of place due to the rMBP thickness is the thickest part of MBA and has better display and a better hardware spec.

2015, Apple introduces the new MacBook and now we have:
12" MB
11" MBA, 13" MBA
13" MBP, 15" MBP

The MB is running on hardware that is new but slow and IMHO, conflicting range between the MBA and MB as previously if you want thinness, MBA is the notebook to go but now we have the MB as well.

So for 2016, I feel Apple should simplify their lineup again to:
12" MB
14" MBP, 16" MBP

both the 14" and 16" will not be larger then the current rMBP 13 and 15 and with the possibility of being slightly smaller dimensionally

While I'm at it, the iPad as well:
originally it's just the 9.7" iPad

Then they introduced the 7.9" iPad Mini

The following year, they introduced the updated 9.7" iPad and for some reason decided to call it iPad Air.

So now we have
7.9" iPad Mini
9.7" iPad Air

Not too bad as Mini and Air basically refer to 2 different screen sizes.

Last year they intro the 12.9" Pro, which is still okay and make lots of sense as now:
7.9" iPad Mini
9.7" iPad Air
12.9" iPad Pro

But with the intro of the 9.7" iPad Pro, Apple mess things up again with the naming
7.9" iPad Mini
9.7" iPad Air
9.7" iPad Pro
12.9" iPad Pro

My suggestion:
7.9", 9.7" iPad
9.7", 12.9" iPad Pro

and they should not skimp out the 9.7" Pro to just 2GB of RAM as it'll affect the "Pro" apps performance. Unless that 12.9" needed 4GB RAM cuz of the display size

True, they should probably just wait until the next generation of processors.

(cry)

Interesting how often the usual suspects (Gruber, ATP tipster) are now hinting at a no event update. Might not have to wait until WWDC.

So chances are slim but keep on eye out for April 26. Why ? Because its the day after Apple's earning announcements, and there have been various times Apple did Mac updates the day after earnings.

Just guesses on my part. Apple must know their laptops are getting way long in the tooth. And they are pushing the iPad as a Computer message pretty hard - they know macbook changes will get enough press anyways without Schiller explaining their awesomeness at WWDC keynote.
