Wishful thinking indeed. I have to say i've completed more games on the PSP and Vita solely because i could carry the system anywhere I go. Sure i killed time on the PS3 and now PS4 but it's rare that I complete games on it. It would have been nice for Vita to easily connect to TVs but Sony could care less about it. And with Sony America's lack of interest in the system my interest became lacking too. The Switch is a godsend for portable gamers and is probably a more appealing system for people that never played the WiiU. The fact that it has an HD screen, first party games, real controls and can have a portable battery pack attached is so appealing to me.

I'm still trying to (in my own mind) figure out the overall Nintendo marketing strategy.

Based on zero data...but, hey! this is the Internet!...what I see is:

1. Phones/mobile devices -- aimed primarily at the youngest children who are going to play with Mom's phone, secondarily (?) with adults who want a console quality game (or a nostalgia kick) on a mobile device.

2. Handhelds -- aimed primarily at pre/young teens who may not have a phone yet

3. Home consoles (that are now portable) -- aimed at their usual demographic group (gamers interested in their first party games, families, young children at home). Now with the portability aspect, serious gamers can take their games on the go with them; families could too, but I'm thinking for a trip, most people would just take their phones & whatever Nintendo handheld they have.

I don't see Nintendo getting rid of the handheld division (at least I hope not). There is a bit of overlap/duplication. If they could pull an iOS/macOS trick, they could potentially have a lot of cross-over with the handheld & the Switch.

As always, the question is, will 3rd party developers support the Switch? If they did, then the Vita (and any other handheld) would be a tough sell.

.. I am really hoping that they will port the Wii U classics to the Switch.

I don't think that's too far fetched. Aren't they porting Mario Kart and Smash already (not sure about the latter)..two things regarding that: the wii u has a small install base but i believe many more people were interested in those games (also bayonetta 2, or Pikmin) but couldn't bring themselves to buying a U. So those ports would be another nice incentive to buy a Switch. Add to that the inevitable draught they also fill up the catalogue - artificially but still great games a lot of folks missed out on.

I still think they'd need some sort of multiplayer fps - among those rpgs a huge time filler ;)

Yes, I think (or I would think, but this is Nintendo) that doing quick updates & ports of their legendary stuff is in order. Besides Mario Kart & Splatoon, they need a quick new Smash Brothers, Pikmin, you name it (and you just did).

I always wonder why they don't have a couple of killer Virtual Console games available on Day 1 as well. Why not have a junior dev team port over Super Mario 64, Zelda: OoT, etc., SNES Super Mario, etc., so there is as much going for the console on Day 1 as possible. Hey Nintendo, why not?

For me I seriously don't care about the performance issues or the battery issues and whatnot. For me if the games are fun I'm sold. So far Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, MK8D, and Zelda BotW (though I'm not a Zelda fan so I don't know if I would get it) are more than enough good reasons to convince me to buy it. The only reasons why I'm not buying it is a) way too ****ing expensive in Canada ($400+tx) as well as the paid service being a bit of a suspicious thing and b) I don't have a good HDTV. I've played the Wii U on my CRT and it was playable but it wasn't really pretty. I doubt the dock would even have a component output to begin with.

I got to thinking about Sony and the Vita last night. I wonder if they're prepared to give the Vita another go and create some kind of dock system for that too? Imagine it, it'd keep it charged up, maybe stick some storage in there for more software, connect to a TV. You could then use a DS3 or 4. Market it as a device for classic PS1 games (go for that NES Mini vibe) since the PS4 doesn't support them, and also the Remote Play with a PS4 function.

One of the reasons my 3DS got so much play was that it was always on its dock fully charged up. The Vita wasn't and I found myself wanting to play a game but having an empty battery.

I know they won't do it. But it'd be nice if they did. There are some amazing games on the Vita and it's ace in itself, supporting PS1, PSP, PS Mini, and Vita games. Bah. Come on Sony!

They won't do because they have access to the same data, and in far more granular detail that I could ever afford, about its feasibility and cost-benefit analysis. Except for indies, Sony's third-party providers don't make traditional mobile games, and they saw consumer reaction to having awful experience translation from console to handheld with the Vita. Categoty consolidation can be a wonderful thing, both fiscally and for brand equity, but there's a point a which a Swiss Army knife mentality turns off a prospective customer, because it's common sense that a product, once its attributes are known, can do only so many things well.

As a handheld, Switch misreads prevailing gaming trends outside the home, and offers fundamentally the same experience as the failed Vita. As a home console, it's a laughable offering. I freely admit that it could be a modest success compared to the Wii U (a house fire would have better sales), but if it were to do so, and especially become a strong seller, it would do so against the numbers. It wouldn't be the first time, but that's all I can look at on which to base my predictions.

Completely agree. My only concern for the Switch is its own operating system. I really want Streetpass back.

As for the games, yeah, despite there being about 5-10 games for the Switch announced I'm already wanting more Switch games than all my other consoles combined! But that has always been the appeal of Nintendo consoles. For me nothing compares to their first party output.

How likely is it that we'll get revised models of the Switch at some point? Switch XL or Switch Lite?
Certainly at some point there will be a more powerful version - much like the 3DS. But that could be years off. There's also a chance they might make a lite version, one that has a slower GPU and can't connect to a TV.

MK yes, Smash no.
There was a rumour about a Smash port just after 4 was released. I imagine they will port it because I doubt they'll have a new one for a long time. I think we'll see quite a few Wii U ports considering how poorly the system sold. Just a guess :)

There were a loooot of rumors before the Switch was announced properly.. ;)

If I can just get Yoshis Wolly World (I have a thing for Yoshis), then I would be a happy camper.

Oh my yes, but something stuck out about the Smash one. "A gut feeling is something your subconscious brain worked out long ago" (or something like that!)

To be fair: Smash is attracting a lot more folks than Yoshi/WoolyWorld (same for Tropical Freeze which was great) - although certainly not me, lol. So it does make a lot of sense to port Smash and less the niche games/gems.

Although I personally would rather see a WoolyWorld2 and a new Donkey Kong game. :)

Well, in a perfect world we would get a new Star Fox in the vein of Dinosaur Planet (Which I loved), Wooly World 2, a new Donkey Kong, a real big scale Pokemon game, a new Metroid game and some more lovely stuff.

Unfortunately Nintendo doesn't seem to like to please their fans..

I am wondering if they will sell docks separately so you can technically place them in each room and just bring the device with you and dock as needed to game almost anywhere in your house.

Sounds like a great opportunity.

Given joycon are €55 each or €90 a pair, pro controller is €80 ... I would hate to see what they would charge for the dock. You'd almost be better off buying another switch ....

Yea figured that but hopeful thinking Nintendo would be smart and consider just selling the dock at a competitive price.

I for one would buy it as I have a media room and also gaming setup in my living room and the flexibility to just bring the device with me and dock it in either would be fantastic.

Well the dock is just that with, I imagine, some breakout board to output a HDMI signal and allow power input. I imagine it'd be slightly more than a 3DS dock.

Joycons contain some really smart tech - I can see why they cost so much. But I also imagine if the system isn't a huge success that they'd include dumber, cheaper joycons as an accessory. And that charge controller does contain a big battery and charging tech. I can see why.

But the joycons. You technically get two controllers with lots of sensors, new vibration tech, it's a lot but there's a reason for it. Two DS4's would set you back £20 more.
