12 Switch
Bomberman R

Yep a real case of quality over quantity there.

As I said, a case of hardcore fans being bláise ...
Please quote all of my post please. You are taking it out of context.

"Games people wanted at the WiiU Launch = 0
Games people want at the Seitch Launch = 1
Switch wins."

That's what I was aiming at. The WiiU didn't have it's own BotW. As in it's own amazing launch game that was a must own.

Zelda facts from Nintendo:

Translation: If you're one of the poor saps that got saddled with the Wii U, especially if you bought it two years ago in anticipation of the Zelda's 'imminent release', you have absolutely no reason to buy the Switch just for this game. Nintendo hobbles one of the two titles it has that will actually sell the system. At least they're consistent.

This just about sums it up for me

At the presentation, they did say the Switch has the DNA of all their other consoles... :)

I was surprised that the Joy-Cons were motion as well...

It'll be a fun system - gotta wait until there's at least 4 games I want on it - gonna be a long while for me as I'm waiting for Pikmin and Starfox... :(

Maybe they'll port over the Wii U Starfox and fix the controls...

I doubt very much that will ever happen. The was the MOTO's last vanity project and it blew up very spectacularly, to say nothing that Nintendo's commitment to hardware fetishism and novel, unnecessary input schemes continues unabated. If anything, they would re-release it, convinced that the Joy-Cons would finally translate the control scheme properly and gamers would suddenly love it. 'To aim, simply change the orientation of the right Joy-Con controller!'

Of course, it never occurred to them that the mechanics from SF64 were, or even SFA on the GameCube, were perfectly fine. They merely needed to bother to come up with a new story, as they did with SFA. Unfortunately, Nintendo's tin god doesn't have the creative chops that he used to (I would argue he never did, but that's another conversation). An important factor to Nintendo's forward success, in terms of alleviating the franchise fatigue that was brutally apparent on the Wii U, is to relegate Miyamoto to position of ceremonial warhorse. After what happen to Zelda for twenty years (the Aonuma-puzzle dark ages), and the destruction of Star Fox and Paper Mario (escpecially Color Splash), he needs to be put where he can't make any important decisions.

The controls of SFZ were fine. People just refused to learn them properly.
The rest of SFZ on the other hand, was quite broken.

They refused because most gamers aren't input scheme neophiles and there was nothing bloody wrong with the existing control scheme, especially what was fundamentally the same game that had been released three times before. People would be equally hostile to a remake of Pac-man that could only be played using one's feet.

One can hope that Nintendo has a few tricks up its sleeve in the comming weeks. For instance, they have a Fire Emblem direct stream today, and since they have officially stated Fire Emblem is now a major IP for the company, I am having a hard time thinking that the stream is only going to be about the upcomming mobile phone game that has been announced. They could at the same time announce a major game for the Switch, and make a lot of people happy.

Then again, it is Nintendo.. :p
Indeed, indeed, two Fire Emblem games announced for the Switch. Surprising!

What were the two ? I saw the Fire Emblem Warriors (akin to Hyrule Warriors) spin off, but what was the other ?

I know there was a separate 3DS game and Mobile platform game, but can't find the second Switch title ....

Zelda details! 900p30 on Switch, 720p30 on Wii U according to Eurogamer. Switch also has more/better environment sounds. No word on if it supports "HD rumble" (I hope so, fishing minigame!).

Which means graphically outside of resolution there will be no difference texture or shadow quality wise if they are only bothering acknowledging higher quality 'environmental sounds' , which honestly will be far less noticeable especially if your using it in undocked mode with the speakers on the device.

There are more details in my post from yesterday, if you are interested.

Having skipped the WiiU, im totally looking forward to the Switch.

My main problem with the WiiU is the 'dual screen' gaming; makes no sense in a home console IMHO. (Star Fox... *sigh*)

Truth be told, i'll be using the switch as a home console 99% of the time, so the screen is pretty much useless for me.

I heard on a podcast that the switch is pretty much the biggest jump in portable power and the smallest jump in home console power for Nintendo hardware. I totally agree with that, and i'm fine with it.

Regarding Mario Odyssey. It looked like an alpha tech demo, the art style was horrible, and quite frankly i dont think such a game should hit store shelves. The art styles as seen in the trailer just doesnt seem to mesh well IMHO.

Surprisingly the game i'm most looking forward to is Sonic Mania.

Also, there better be a Retro Studio Metroid title at E3 :)

Agreed on Odyssey! Somehow it really didn't click - although the possibilities are incredible.

Haven't heard of Sonic Mania - have to check! is it 2d side scroller? I really miss those! Played Sonic on the Masta System like crazy but never had a MegaDrive/Genesis and was always super jelly when I saw it in stores.

Same for Metroid - I guess not a system seller by far but one of those titles that can really make the difference (say with an exclusive Bayonetta game and the likes.

Sadly Bayonetta isn't a system seller either and indeed Bayonetta 2 as incredible action game really underperformed even considering it was on an underperforming console at retail. Despite critical acclaim aplenty.

Unless Nintendo buy exclusivity, I would imagine Bayonetta 3 if it ever comes to pass will be developed firstly for PS4/XB1 and then later if possible ported to Switch after.

Perhaps and more likely to happen is that they may simply re-release Bayonetta 2 with a few enhancements ...

I thought it was just me, since even the measured commentary on the Switch almost universally has Odyssey as a positive.

Yep, it's something of a jazz riff on the first three games. Christian Whitehead, the main dev, made unauthorised HD mobile ports of the Sonic 1 and 2, including a custom physics engine that replicated the originals 1:1, and SEGA was sufficiently impressed that they authorised him and gave him a job, so I'm very optimistic.

Even in best of times, Metroid was a never a tier-one title. It has a dedicated vocal following (myself included) but the best-selling title (Prime 1) didn't even crack 3m total sales (though it had a respectable 13% attachment). My hope is that, if one has been in the works, they froze Sakamoto out. I have no need for any more 'maternal feelings'.

That's what I meant: lump in a couple of great - but really niche - titles/IPs into the mix and all of a sudden a so-so machine becomes really interesting. and Nintendo does have a lot of those: DK, Treasure tracker, Bayo, Metroid, I guess Star Fox too.

I dearly miss WaveRacer and F-Zero too

Add don't forget Pilotwings :(

I more than likely will pick up a switch at some point (even though I have pre-ordered, I can't justify the expense when I have a Wii U currently) when there are a number of titles that I want. Which means probably next year (and no doubt after a price cut or minor spec revision (as in bump the 32gb to at least 128gb on board storage).

As it currently stands at €320 + €80 for a pro-controller + €120 for a fast Class 10 U3 microSD and €75 for Zelda, I would be looking at close to €600 to play a game that I can buy on Wii U for €50. I already own MK8 with all its DLC and Splatoon (which I enjoyed but tired of quickly). So given that price and the lack of compelling software that I would buy for a while, it's just screams common sense to skip this one out until there are more compelling reasons for me.

Nah, Pilotwings never did it for me. ;)

But an awesome Sonic game (Earthworm Jim! ToeJam&Earl! revisited Clayfighter! LooneyToons Jam / NBA Jam , a GoldenEye type of shooter) may be a very good argument to get one. Never understood why they didn't put more effort into the retro-angle (granted, those IPs don't belong to Ninty) while also pushing the innovative or modernization of some others (like Odyssey could be).

Check out the trailer for Sonic Mania on YouTube (i'll link it later (can't now)). It's truly a labor of love project from the looks of it, in the art style of the 16-bit (Mega-Drive/Genesis) titles.

Retro has been really quiet as of late, so I'm hoping we see and hear something @ E3.

I picked up a GameCube back in the day for Factor5's Rogue Squadron. (By far the best Star Wars action/sim game IMHO). I miss Factor5's technical prowess.

Metroid Prime 1 is prolly one of my all-time favorites. Which reminds me, i enjoyed MetroidPrime3 on the Wii (the controls were awesome IMHO)....and i dont think the Switch will have the 'pointer' functionality like the Wii, which is a shame cause I liked that functionality more than the motion controls.

We havent heard a thing about the virtual console on the Switch.

Thanks, no need to link for me, will look at it later myself. :)

With retro angle I meant the glorious days of SNEs (and partially N64). Not Retro, the company. Although I think that bulldozer game from way back could be great :D

Blast Corps !!! I still have the cartridge for my N64! That was a RARE game ;) on both senses.

Dang!! :D

Somehow got Retro and Rare confused. Maybe because both produce(d) top quality games non-stop for Big N and start with the letter R.

What are the twelve "big-hitters" for the first year you are referring to? Genuinely curious.

I am as well. Here's everything that I've seen even mentioned thus far:

1-2 Switch
Arms
Disgaea 5 Complete
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
EA Sports FIFA
Fast RMX
Has-Been Heroes
I Am Setsuna
Just Dance 2017
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Minecraft
NBA 2K
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Rime
Skyrim
Splatoon 2
Super Mario Odyssey
Skylanders Imaginators
SnipperClippers
Sonic Mania
Steep
Super Bomberman R
Syberia 3
Ultra Street Fighter 2 The Final Challenge
Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Out of those, the only strong contenders are FIFA, BotW (and even that's questionable, recall that not a single Zelda title has broken 8m units and only one has ever materially exceeded 10% attachment), Just Dance (hasn't had a strong attachment rate since the Wii and rarely exceeds 1m per title today), MK8 (best-selling Wii U title but attachment averages around the high 20s) and Super Mario Odyssey. Honestly, I feel up in the air about Odyssey. The knee-jerk reaction says, 'oh, Mario, gonna sell like crazy!' Except that look at the top-ten main-series Mario titles: only three of the ten (#7, 8 and 10) are 3D titles.

Everything else on that list is either unknown, a title that's been released for years, or has sub-3% attachment or worse.
